Once fandoms started to appeal to the broader audiance the quality of these fandoms began to dip. A great example of this is the warhammer 40k fandom.

What causes is this that there is a district difference between quality fans, and by quality i mean they stick to the original nature of the fandom and the ideas of what made it unique and good, and what I call a fly-by-night reddit fan.
The problem is, the reddit fans are the most vocal and largest groups, and end up warping the vision of a fandoms original intent to what ever the current group thought of the time is despite the loyal quality fans not really wanting this.
What this results in, is usually reencounters and marketing departments looking at shit like reddit and twitter and thinking that what they see there is what the loyal fans want.
As a result they adhere to what the fly by night fans suggest and initially they get huge surges of activate, sales, priase and general good reception BUT it quickly drops off because those fly-by-night fans dont actually stick around because they like the fandom, they just stick around because its trendy at that time, they are not the fans that invest a lot of time money and effort into the product.
See star wars for example. Disney tried to cater to the fans that are not the nerds that buy like 2 of every merchandise item, one to keep, 1 to open.
This happened to a LOT of fandoms over the last decade, Dr. Who, warhammer, SCP, Warcraft, dnd, They tried it with LotR but that lore is set literally in stone so they could not do anything to it.

Hate to break it you guys but it was always mostly pretty mid. What made it cool was that it wasn't known by literally fucking everyone and when you found the site it felt like you found some secret shadow project you aren't supposed to be able to access.

Nobody went straight from Big Bang Theory to creating SCP objects. The site was corrupted by self inserting egotists. They cancelled all the ones who made interesting content but kept all the very boring midwits. They then gradually shit up the new SCPs with endless meaningless dialogue, terrible characters and various "format screws" that make reading new articles a chore.
They then congratulate each other endlessly leading to an echo chamber of people who can competently write neither flash fiction nor compelling longer narratives.
The actual largest audience is literal children who will gladly interact with games involving classic SCPs and have no interest in new-scp and don't care that Dr Bright internet raped every child he met or whatever.
The new-SCP cabal just rewrite decades old articles to rename his self insert character. They rewrite everything too and replace decades old SCPs with generic slop, sometimes removing everything that made them interesting.
