Yes, it is possible. In The Three Pillers of Zen Yasutani Roshi touches briefly on this topic. With practice anyone can learn to enter the meditative state known as Mushinjo: a state deviod of all thought and sensation. Spend enough time in this state and your body will naturally die. It's allegedly a peaceful way to go, though, and if you die in this state of (un)consciousness you will not ever be reborn. A Buddhist text called the Kusharon supposedly goes into great detail about this but I don't know of any English translations.
