"You are not just a drop in the ocean, you are the entire ocean in a drop." - Rumi

fuckin' A

That’s not a real Rumi quote. 90% of the stuff attributed to Rumi in English is made up or badly butchered by a single dishonest translator.

That translator's name? Albert Einstein
>>
"I do not waste my words on tired minds.
I can only talk to those who are thirsty
for the sea."

Here’s a more authentic version:

O Drop

Listen, O drop, give yourself up without regret,
and in exchange gain the Ocean.
Listen, O drop, bestow upon yourself this honor,
and in the arms of the Sea be secure.
Who indeed should be so fortunate?
An Ocean wooing a drop!
In God’s name, in God’s name, sell and buy at once!
Give a drop, and take this Sea full of pearls.

[Mathnawi IV, 2619-2622, Jewels of Remembrance, trans. Kabir & Camille Helminski]

No one will believe you, but they should.
>For one thing, he has minimized references to Islam. Consider the famous poem “Like This.” Arberry translates one of its lines, rather faithfully, as “Whoever asks you about the Houris, show (your) face (and say) ‘Like this.’ ” Houris are virgins promised in Paradise in Islam.
>Barks avoids even the literal translation of that word; in his version, the line becomes, “If anyone asks you how the perfect satisfaction of all our sexual wanting will look, lift your face and say, Like this.”
>The religious context is gone. And yet, elsewhere in the same poem, Barks keeps references to Jesus and Joseph. When I asked him about this, he told me that he couldn’t recall if he had made a deliberate choice to remove Islamic references.
>“I was brought up Presbyterian,” he said. “I used to memorize Bible verses, and I know the New Testament more than I know the Koran.”
>He added, “The Koran is hard to read.”

with these types of old mystical wise men i always wonder what they would do in situations like you bring up your offering of exotic fruit from the mysterious lands its a carolina reaper and you tell him just scarf it, or like its your turn to ask your question and you just spit in his eye and put him in a choke hold before he can even react what words of wisdom would he have then while his face is turning purple? would he comment on the situation or just accept his life is over i'm genuinely curious. i think most guroids in modern times are shysters so they have bouncers and shit to prevent this because they just make up gay sayings to sell books but what would a real wise guy do if you got up in his face.

>I'm a violent retard that is too dumb to comprehend or challenge a wise man so i must kill him to satiate my ego

They would calmly and spiritually punch you in the face.

shouldnt someone truly wise understand that their mortal body lives in the world of physics and reality and not assume just because their spirit is strong it will protect them from matter?
>>
>>39650089
As the philosopher Mike Tyson once said, "Everyone has a plan 'till they get punched in the mouth."

This has some roots in truth but is a bit exaggerated because of contrarianism, I think. I agree that some popular “translations” (loose interpretations is a better phrase) can be pretty fluffy and overly romantically New-Agey, like the “translations” by Coleman Barks, worth bringing up, even if they’re made with nominally good intentions. But the mystical idea brought up in the OP is pretty much on point in describing a major concern of Rumi’s works, it’s not just made up out of nowhere. R.A. Nicholson is a very celebrated, and fastidiously scholarly, translator of Rumi, and E.H. Whinfield is an older one from the late 1800s also regarded as one of the very good ones who made great and accurate translations of Rumi’s poetry. Worth looking into.

Your violent thoughts don't matter
>>

He's still antagonizing you after death so I guess he won. Always going to be another wiseman you can't kill them all can you.

No, I’m not exaggerating or being contrarian. Barks’ versions are just wrong.
They are outright confabulated in many cases and mutilated beyond recognition in others. They can’t even be called “translations.”
Other versions of Rumi in english have committed less egregious offenses but have still heavily modified and edited his poems, removing whole sections and terms and inventing some of their own, including making substantial changes to his meaning, themes and form.
And I don’t need to see antiquated translations of dubious accuracy, I can read the originals.
