No they fucking weren't. If they were talking about baboons, then why didn't they fucking draw baboons then? They drew and wrote about elephants, rhinos, hippos, giraffes, monkeys, so why not baboons?

Don’t forget the dogmen.
>>
>>39656275
That’s Saint Christopher the Canaanite. Apparently his name was badly translated as ‘Christopher the Canine’, hence why he’s depicted as a dog man

its also possible that its a christianized depiction of anubis, since anubis was becoming a relatively popular god in the greek world at the time, under the syncretic name hermanubis.

i think dogmen comes more from cults that worshiped dogs, like the anubian cult, wearing dog masks

Looks more like one culture, really. Started up in ancient Greece, got coopted by the Romans and spread into Europe where the Bestiary writers eventually took them up.

That sounds f'n cool. Maybe that's why the association with werewolves and the full moon.

This article on St Christopher from an Orthodox perspective is pretty thorough and ties in the concept of dog throughout the Bible. They have stories of the early apostles having dog men as mercenaries.
