Got a few ideas, but currently it's a toss up between Adler from Signalis or an Oblivion Dark Brotherhood member. Lot of time between now and then so probably decide more definitively when it's closer to Halloween, but those're my two frontrunners for now.

Starting to build my horror movie watchlist , any recommendations? I do enjoy the classics the most like Halloween, Hellraiser, etc

But I'm open to seeing some what modern horror has to offer, I didn't mind weapons but I do think it was overhyped. Cool premise but coulda been scripted a little better.

Are of the peele horror movies any good besides get out? thats the only one ive seen and even then kinda found it a little more funny than scary lol
>>

Nice. I like it a lot.

Some favorites off the top of my head:

Hereditary
Noroi
Banshee Chapter
The Ring
The Ninth Gate
The Empty Man
Lake Mungo
Butterfly Kisses
Sator
>>

>Starting to build my horror movie watchlist
>But I'm open to seeing some what modern horror has to offer
kek, I'm actually in the same boat and need a few modern recommendations off the beaten path. I caught funny games (2007) recently and it was breddy gud, especially if you hate rich people. hereditary (2018) is recommended to death, but it really is one of the best modern horrors. the killing of a sacred deer (2017) is great if you like spaghetti and want to be weirded out. but some people aren't into spaghetti. or being weirded out.
>Are of the peele horror movies any good besides get out?
as far as peele goes, I've only ever seen get out (like you), so... not sure about his other stuff. maybe someone else can offer more insight.

What books should I read to get into the season? I’ve got a short horror collection on my list, and that’s basically it.

I love H.P. Lovecraft myself, bit of a cliché choice I know, but there really is something special in his stories.
That being said his writing style can be a bit difficult at times to read a long with so if you're looking for something with a similar flavor of horror that's more readable then I'd recommend Robert W. Chambers' "The King in Yellow"

No shopping yet, but I love miniatures and scenes/dioramas or things that could be integrated into one. Been having fun going through what I do have and making some displays and things here and there while reorganizing other stuff. Big into Dolls/Figures/miniatures and all that so just have a casual hangout space on one of the storage shelves for now. I don't want to go full Halloween until mid/late September tho. Been itching to make some kind of 1/12 scale adventure's guild. Perhaps I'll start on that soon and then I can decorate it for Halloween and then later Yule and so on ^///^
>>
>>40956858
Based. Hopefully this season I start my vampire Warhammer project, it should be able to double as seasonal decorations.
>>40956798
Spirit really is an institution. Something about Halloween seems to validate the "cheap plastic" aspect. It's intentionally lurid, cheap, lowbrow. Cheap thrills, lowbrow scares, lowbrow indulgences (candy, liquor/parties, roadside attractions) Halloween seems to combine a strong sense of community and humanity, meeting your neighbors in person, creating a neighborhood event, with a sort of bacchanalian celebration of "guilty pleasures". There's something beautiful and primal about that combination. I believe I will buy the big animatronic ratman this year.
>>
Do any fellow autists associate different horror movie subgenres with different seasons?
I like to watch summer/spring horror in September, fall horror in October and winter horror in November to drag out Halloween season as long as possible.

Exquisite taste, anon. Very based. I believe I'll grab the BPA-laden zombie chalice to host an experimental pairing of orange fanta and vodka.
>>
>>40957138
Not specifically the subgenre, but for Halloween I am looking for stories and movies that suggest autumn/Halloween. I want it to literally depict Halloween/the lead up to Halloween or at least fall weather. This is why I hate how often lists of Halloween movies or books are just lists of horror. The Thing is a classic but not what I'm looking for when I want that Halloween mood, as an arbitrary example.
>>
>>40951358
Look up anthologies by Marvin Kaye
Also "the dark descent" anthology. I also liked the few Robert Aickman stories that I've read
>>
>>40957408
Very much agree with this. Halloween is a celebration of autumnal spookiness. It's a harvest festival at its roots.

Sorta tangential, but I think that - because I grew up in a region that lacks the seasonality of places like Europe or the Northeastern US - I tend to tailor my media consumption such that it strongly aligns with the current season (e.g., fall media during fall, winter media during winter), so a large portion of what I watch during fall is fall-related, horror or otherwise. It's really just seasonal escapism for me, because I live too close to the equator to regularly experience much of what's depicted in traditional fall/winter media.

>>
>>40966918
The funnest memory is when I was like seven or so. My drunk dad took me and my brothers trick or treating. It was awesome going around getting candy while he sung to Black Sabbath and older classics. In hindsight it was pretty dangerous with all the kids around to be drunk driving, but damn was it fun.
>>
>>40966918
I don't have anything that stands out particularly, but I do remember how awesome it was to have a relentless stream of communal activities as a kid - book fairs, cartoon network specials, sleepovers, and trick or treating were all steadfast pursuits. Nothing quite recaptures the anarchic joy of ransacking a neighborhood with a handful of close friends, knowing damn well you're going to surfeit yourself with the newfound spoils an hour past your bedtime. Booze and sex just don't hit the same way.

Anyone doing any rituals for the season?
>>
>>40971410
I had a habit of opening my door on October first and putting a jack o lantern out there, as if to say "come on in, spirits of the season". One year I noticed that shit was falling over in the home a lot more often, so I guess maybe I got a ghost that liked to knock shit over. I didn't really find that convenient, so I haven't opened the door to spirits like that in subsequent years.

The Presence. It's a Kickstarter game that I haven't received yet and I see that only 15 retailer pledges were made for it but it looks absolutely amazing and I'm stoked to get it. Their design blog for it is an intereating read and I agree with all the design philosophy they had behind it.

I like Halloween to remind me of my childhood sometimes, so I'd suggest going to your local thrift store (not Goodwill. they're a chain and they suck, plus they sell all their good shit on eBay at a higher price to cover shipping) and peruse the children's book section. in it, you can find a lot of spooky treasures if you're not in the mood to read about gore and sleaze and a lot of cuss words. I find picrel from 1991 once. it's a collection of spooky, short stories geared towards kids. some are meh, but the good ones are REALLY good and they're all by different authors. also, the books there are super cheap, like $0.50 a piece and many are the original paperbacks too

I'm personally quite fond of folk horror and Puritan horror, with Witchfinder General and various adaptations of The Crucible as more grounded examples. For more fantastic takes, there's Solomon Kane (which, in my opinion, didn't really seem to grasp Howard's character well), plus The Witch. Although technically a distinct denomination rather than actual Puritans, The Brethren of Light in Twins of Evil put off a great vibe, plus the opening music would have worked great for a better Solomon Kane adaptation.

This year I moved to a more rural area with plenty of farm stands. I plan on buying pumpkins and carving them throughout the season. Like one a week. Maybe I can leave them around town or something to spread the magic? My town is a summer lake destination spot so there isn't much community besides the tourists in the summer and the lingering workers / farmers / retirees/ druggies
>>
>>41009337
Sounds like a lovely idea, anon. Leaving some pumpkins around in a rural area seems like a good deed as long as nobody fucks with them or whatever, but I think people might appreciate it as an anonymous act.

Ever seen The Blood on Satan's Claw? I'd consider it foundational folk horror.
>>
>>41009560
>The Blood On Satan's Claw
Yes. That's an excellent example of the period folk horror I was referring to. Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter is another one I enjoy. Just the whole overall vibe of combining period costumes, hairstyles, weapons, and even social mores all come together for a comfy vibe during spooky season for me personally.
>>
>>40945714
Is there anything else I should add? I feel it's pretty complete
>>
>>41009560
I'd accept some light vandalism from kids because mischief does come with the season. For the most part I think you just need it for the ambience. Little reminders of the new season do a lot to really accentuate the feeling for everybody. Even if it's subtle

I really only came into my own vis a vis costumes in adulthood. Of course that mostly means making an ass of myself at tame parties mostly attended by coworkers, but damn if I don't look good doing it. And if you hit a bar crawl on Halloween weekend a good costume can get some compliments. I think thats why people like me get into cons and Ren faires, but Halloween is special for us dress up enthusiasts.

I just had a pumpkin ale for the first time in my life and it's actually really good, and I'm not even a beer drinker. Some beer snobs roll their eyes at pumpkin beers but I've always loved them (although I dislike the ones with added sugar, which is totally unnecessary). A true New World classic and a must-have for autumn. Some good ones:
>Shipyard Pumpkinhead Ale (kinda light on flavor but crisp as the autumn leaves)
>Southern Tier Pumpking Imperial Ale (great all around, big pumpkin flavor and nice and strong)
>Saranac Pumpkin Ale (a solid standard pumpkin beer)
Sometimes you can find sweet potato ales made by craft breweries. They're a lot less common but they have a similar taste to pumpkin beers. Highly recommend those as well if you can find them.

I love the feeling of the Halloween atmosphere beginning to sink in as September continues to crawl by. This season really induces a certain comfy dissociation deep in my consciousness that I savor. Despite the hyperconsumerism that lingers over the American holiday season, there's still a certain aura that permeates even the most mundane aspects of life during this time of year. Seeing the macabre (even if it's a mild, watered-down version of it) gradually encroach upon the well-worn zones of daily existence superimposes a dreamy quality to existence. I think that's what I love the most about the Halloween season; it just seems more conducive for the lines of reality to become a bit more blurry. Any other anons familiar with the sensation I'm describing or is it just me?

Warm Color Nature Wallpapers. Not all of it is autumn scenery but a fair bit of the thread is (and some of it is silhouettes against sunset which are at least the right color). A few thots in various states of dress. A few paintings/drawings made their way in too.

For anime:
>Shiki
>Another
>Dusk Maiden of Amnesia
>Ghost Hunt
>Mieruko-chan (manga is better)
>Vampire Hunter D (two movies)
For games:
>Amnesia: The Dark Descent
>Pumpkin Jack
>Yomawari: Night Alone
>RE in general
>Silent Hill 1
>Castlevania Symphony of the Night (or any CE games really)
>The 7th Guest

Here's a more comprehensive list as far as anime is concerned. I definitely recomend Death Hound and Dark Gathering.

No, I know what you mean, and I struggle to put it into words myself. There is a comfy aura Halloween has that is unmatched by any other time of year. I think it has something to do with the evolutionary dissonance of there being implied death and threat everywhere, but never actually being in any danger.
>>
>>41019770
When I was a kid my dad recorded a bunch of Halloween cartoons on vhs, even going so far as to pause the recording to get rid of commercials. It had It's The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown and Garfield's Halloween Adventure, as well as a Simpsons Scare-a-thon that had the first four Treehouse of Horror specials. My dad even did some weird block letters for the label. I still watch these every year, even if the actual tape is gone.
>>
>>41026068
Something that the Charlie Brown Great Pumpkin special captures is the way it feels to trick or treat after dark as a kid. Maybe it's just that you rarely get to walk around after dark when you're young but the moody watercolor sky and the ethereal music makes it feel like magic. I find myself trying to chase that feeling every October. When I got a little older a friend told me "the veil was thin" on Halloween night and when we walked around the cemetery I remember being so sure we were engaging with something much older than ourselves.

1: The Descent. If you're claustrophobic this would be a good one, not really new though. Came out in 2005.

2: The Hills have eyes. Again, not new by any means but if you haven't watched it its worth it. Very graphic though.

3: Talk to Me: A newer movie, if you haven't watched its super good.

For Halloween season imma be mellowed out on meth and booze. No questions asked. It's gonna be extra spooky when I unlock my super powers again.

Never again held under the thumb of authority unregulated.

I thought about making one of these, but I think I'll just use the one you made.
>>
>>41026434
The Descent is probably the best cave horror movie ever made, at least that I've seen. The sets, cinematography, and lighting are all top notch. Too bad the sequel was fucking terrible.
>>
God damn I wish I was artistic. I’d make so many water color paintings of Halloween and fall. Instead all I can do is write half well.
To get into the season I’m going to make a creepypasta thread and try to have it be running all of October. I’m hoping people will pop in and write their own stories as well.

I am claustrophobic, so it is unbearably scary for me, I literally cant do it. The opening sequencing in the tunnel is literally my worst nightmare. I dont give a fuck about the monsters or whatever, the cave itself is what is scary in that movie. Buried is a tough watch for that reason too.

Update for my pumpkin beer bros: Elysian Night Owl pumpkin ale is the best one I've ever tasted. Perfectly balanced, full-bodied but not too heavy. Also it easily has one of the best mouth feels of any beer I've ever had. This will be my main one for the rest of the season.

Fascinating observation, I never thought about it like that. It sorta lulls you into an extended trance, a dark and whimsical numbness.
>>
>>41026129
Precisely. The Great Pumpkin really captures that liminal atmosphere of Halloween (liminal in its original academic meaning, not the dull reddit usage). I also heard someone describe Halloween as a night where the veil between the living and the dead is blurred. I think there is some validity to that, whether its metaphysical or purely sociocultural is up for debate. Maybe both.

Last year I had this idea for what I thought would be a really neat animation, but personal issues meant I couldn't complete it and ended up just posting a screenshot of it. Maybe I could finish it this year instead to give myself something to work on.

same, love these threads. This time of the year in general is just so comfy. The bugs are finally gone, or at least about to. The heat is dying down replaced by a chilly breeze.

People are slowly rolling out their autumn decorations with those nice smelling cinnamon scented candles. Everyone is interested in the horror genre whether it be games or movies. Its just the best time of the year.

Its a failed TV pilot about the dracula's moving to new york that someone recorded on its airing and got uploaded to youtube. Its an old favorite of mine and I watch it every year.

Look out for their variety pack. The pumpachinno is pretty good.
If you can get your hands on Shipyard pumpkinhead, give that a try. It's like a lighter wheat beer with good pumpkin spice.
IDK where you are, but in Oregon we get a 2towns pumpkin cider, which rules, and a chaider. Both really bring the flavor of fall for me :)
>>
>>41029450
Super noted! I wanted to try it last year but I think I went with a local milder brew since I Elysian Space Dust, one of my all time faves, reallly gets ya drunk like, damn, can really taste and feel the Space Dust <3

If you're looking to watch anime during spooky season, I recommend Boogiepop Phantom (2000)

Eerie, mysterious and very cozy

It's not the spookiest, but it's a great time capsule of late 90's early 2000's goth culture.
I've got a little line-up of my own as well, but I'm open to suggestions:
Don't Starve (Fun to struggle to survive with friends, and the art style is seasonally appropriate.)
Darkwood (Eastern European horror game, sort of a top-down STALKER like.)
Pumpkin Jack (Fun little cartoony platformer, it's basically a kids game but it's well themed.)
Pathologic (Strange and difficult eurojank, but I've heard the story is great.)
Lost in Random (Laika/Tim Burton-ish style kids adventure game.)
Psychonauts (Older kids adventure game with a good sense of humor.)
Inscryption (Card game with a great art style and soundtrack.)
Hogwarts Legacy (Not my favorite but the countryside and castle are very atmospheric and I enjoy flying around on a broom.)
Grim Dawn (Diablo clone with a very Solomon Kane theme.)
Darkest Dungeon (Great and difficult roguelike? I love the art style and the mods.)
Little Nightmares (Another little adventure game, but it's got some great monster designs.)
Chilla's art (Great set of short J-horror games.)
Puppet Combo Games (Short cheesy horror games, fun one time but not much replay value.)
FAITH (Atari-style horror adventure game.)
>>
>>41033937
It is, and apparently the sequel thats about to come out was ruined and turned into an action game and not an RPG.
>>
>>41034286
Dude, the atmosphere in Inscryption is top tier. If any anon here hasn't played it, I highly suggest going in blind and playing it by candlelight.

It's one of the best indie games I've played in years. I heard it has good mods too but I haven't looked into them.

I was going to try Andy and leyley before October and Vampire the masquerade during October. Please no spoilers. My computer kind of sucks so I probably can't play the really nice horror vidya, but any recs?
>>41022373
It's not really all that spooky but I unironically enjoyed watching the 1970s Sabrina cartoon one October a few years back.

I know Shadowman is an old title so emulation might be fine or more intensive than the original hardware depending. Other than that Faith, Darkest Dungeon, Darkwood, Psychonauts, Pathologic, Don't Starve, and maybe Inscryption should run pretty well. I really enjoy emulating the old Castlevania games around October, and there are some great DOOM horror mods as well as a fun Castlevania fangame called Simons Destiny, they're all free and pretty easy to find. BLOOD is a great boomer shooter to play during the season as well.
