The truth is that if you can't beat someone in a fight, your chances of being able to draw and fire during that fight aren't as great as you might think. Sure, you have a better chance than without any gun, but it's wrong to see carrying a gun as some kind of magic solution that will let you win 100% of the time.
inb4 "i wont let him get close" yeah, you will. You're not going to just shoot anyone that comes within 20 feet of you. You're probably going to get your ass beat and have your gun stolen or worse. I recommend getting at least some training/experience with open handed fighting as a supplement to carrying.

I'm not one of these anons. I don't do martial arts, but I really want to in the future. My little brother does boxing. I train really hard in the gym to build my body and get super strong, and I started lifting in 2013. I feel pretty good about myself for working towards improving myself every day. However, there is one thing that really pisses me off and makes me super jealous: rich people.

You can tell people that if they did X, Y, and Z, and worked really hard consistently over so many years, that they could realistically stand a chance at being an elite athlete, as in being in the top 1% in an athletic discipline. You absolutely cannot tell somebody that if they did X, Y, and Z, that they would realistically stand a chance at entering the top 1% wealth-wise. If you're in the top 1% in the US in 2025, you have a net worth of at least $11,000,000. (18% of Americans have a net worth of $1,000,000.) How the fuck are you supposed to gain anywhere near that amount of wealth, in 2025 dollars, within your lifetime? Don't forget about taxes. Also, being rich doesn't really matter when you're old, anyway. Funnily enough, income inequality is about the same in the US and Europe, but wealth inequality is way greater in the US. It largely has to do with inheritance. Don't forget there are tons of people out there who get underpaid, even if they're making something like $80,000 per year, and there are tons of people getting overpaid with several millions of dollars per year.

A rifle is a better fighting weapon than a pistol, but for daily carry pistols end up being a lot more practical for the majority of people. Since the size limitations of a carry pistol put serious constraints on cartridge size, barrel length, etc. optimizing for stopping power is likely a bad approach. Training for fast and accurate shot placement while maximizing round count with a cartridge capable of adequate penetration and tissue damage seems to be the most popular approach, with the primary goal being to score a central nervous system hit and the second-best option being to put enough holes in the circulatory system to depressurize it.

The best concealed carry option for pure stopping power with a low round count is probably a pocket full of hand grenades.

The takeaway: handgun calibers are pretty negligent in differences. 9mm, 40S&W and .45 Auto were the most common, each with hundreds of cases. Probably a lot of mag dumpers if I had to guess.

Shotguns and rifles were far and away the leaders against any handgun cartridge in ending a gun fight.

Also, FMJ and JHP performance are wildly different. I'd take a .45 Auto FMJ over a 9mm FMJ for lethality but a 9mm JHP is damn near on-par with .45 Auto JHP so it's well worth the trade-off for capacity gains. As a gearhead might say...
