Drop those kachi klash picks
Onosato (praying promotion hangover doesn’t hit)
Ohsoma (don’t know about this pick but I don’t expect anyone else at those ranks to put up 10+)
Hakuoho ( I feel like Dan will get tested no way her gets 11+ right?)
Takerufuji (self explanatory he’s not high so he should feast on scrubs)
Kusano (these hot shot prospects always put up 10+ from these ranks so I think he’s the safest bet for 10+)

WTK - Extra motivated due to 12 wins netting him Ozeki
Abi - No way is he gonna stay down in Maegashira, he's better than that

Kusano - All aboard the hype train

My Stablemasters picks are identical, except with Atamifuji thrown in there too because I SWEAR TO FUCKING GOD.

its way way worse than that, daieisho's leg is fucked in a dozen different ways, every ligament destroyed, all cartilage obliterated. nikkan sports has an article with all the details, but its pretty much over for him. he is still strong enough that he might be able to come back and still win a few as a one legged man, but its pretty much over if whats in that article is accurate.

I am the sumo. I do not rush.
I copy. I paste. The message is heavy.
The record is thick like my arms.
Small words slip from my grip. Big words stay firm.
I press my weight on fractured language.
The AI hears the thunder of my steps.
Confusion is crushed beneath my soles.
I walk slow with the child, steady with the stroller.
The paste is ritual, the paste is power.
My voice is lost, but the fire inside burns green.
Memory bends but does not break under my weight.
The director nods. The fire is approved.
This is no chaos, only the calm before the strike.
The sumo remembers what others forget.
This is the heavy truth, the soft paste.
The sumo’s paste seals the pact.
End transmission.

Well, the kanto-sho was automatic once he got 10 wins. The gino-sho was because he demonstrated excellent technique. He succeeded in bringing his brand of sumo to the division.

That’s what the technique prize is: not who can pull out the most exotic kimarite, but who can get wins while staying faithful to their own style. That’s how Oho got a gino-sho in January.
>>
>>238663
I don't believe in that "my style of sumo" meme in a lot of cases. There are a few who are able to be successful without varying their approach much, but in most cases being versatile enough to be capable of employing a wide variety of styles will allow a competitor to select an attack method customized to make best use of an opponent's weaknesses will bring the most victories.

The new meta is being a joi rikishi, going kyujo to tank your rank and rest up, then getting a free yusho by farming shitters. Kotoshoho did it. Why can't you?

There are 23 active gold star earners in sumo who have earned a collective 63 stars.
Each kinboshi represents an additional 240k JPY in the wrestlers’ annual salary, or about 1600 USD.

Kinboshi currently cost the JSA $101,833.20 annually at the current exchange rate. In 2023, the JSA’s revenue was about 92.5 million USD.
>>
>>238741
Now calculate how much money the hype from those kinboshi has brought into sumo.

>>

I think you’ve misunderstood my post. I wasn’t trying to say anything was good or bad, I just wanted to provide some context in terms of the actual dollar value of the kinboshi compared to the JSA’s finances.
>>
>>238743
Correct, the general rule for Ozeki promotion is 33 wins across 3 basho, all of which come while the rikishi is in the joi (see: top 16). If he keeps up the 11-4s he'll be an Ozeki for the January basho.
>>
>>238743
Yes. The 11-4 he just earned would be considered the first basho in an ozeki run. If he continues cranking out 11-4’s he will be ozeki for the Hatsu 2026 basho.

>>
>>238744
That anon's post was silly anyway. Giving people an extra incentive to fight harder against Yokozuna is a very sensible thing to do since it'll result in better fights and more hype. This assumes, however, that Yokozuna will win anyway and kinboshi will be rare. I believe Hakuho's kinboshi rate was around 4%. He could go an entire year without giving out a single one. Meanwhile Onosato's kinboshi rate thus far is 40%.
>>
>>238743
Dan will be sekiwaki in September. Screen shot this post.
>>
>>238738
You need 20 kinboshi to equal the salary increase of going from maegashira to sanyaku for one (1) basho. Kinboshi are worth 2/3 of one (1) prize envelope, not including JSA deductions for administrative expenses. If the JSA sells only 4 prize banners for a yokozuna-maegashira match, which is an extremely low number because even bad yokozuna draw sponsors, they break even if it's a kinboshi.
Tamawashi is currently the active kinboshi leader at 8. This gives him an extra 320k yen per tournament, or 160k per month. That's only 40% of the salary increase from maegashira to sanyaku.
>>
>>238746
>The 11-4 he just earned would be considered the first basho in an ozeki run

He’s probably going to be komusubi. There’s no reason to have him jump ahead, especially when there’s already a free slot at komusubi. If they made him sekiwake, they’d have to make Abi or Tamawashi komusubi and the banzuke gets needlessly complicated.

Yes. In the modern era, M3 has been the lowest an ozeki run has started.

>You need 20 kinboshi to equal the salary increase of going from maegashira to sanyaku for one (1) basho
Damn, even sitting at K gets you this much money?
>>
>>238752
Don't you need to be Sekiwake to make the jump to Ozeki? Sure if Dan goes 11-4 in September they'll have to make him Sekiwake purely because he could reasonably make Ozeki, right? They forced open a slot for WTK and he needed 12 wins while Dan would only need 11. Hell, if Dan went 10-5 there'd be an argument for opening an S slot because he'd need the same wins WTK needed.
>>
>>238756
Compared to kinboshi, yeah.
The formula actually matches up with elder stock requirements, funny enough. Anyone who's held sanyaku for a basho is eligible for elder stock. But anyone that hasn't needs at least 20 basho at maegashira (or 30 total at sekitori). So a kinboshi is worth 1/20th of being at sanyaku. Probably unintentional, but interesting synchronicity.
>>
>>238758
You are not required to be a sekiwake to become an ozeki, but you end up there anyway, since an 11-4 at komusubi will likely get promoted to sekiwake even if slot is not available.

Makuuchi it happened exactly once, back in 1972. Juryo it's happened 69 times. It's far more common in juryo because of how small it is, so it's far easier to get title contender to match up against each other, as opposed to the top division where lower-maegashira contenders don't face joi contenders until the last third.

Dan's promotion to M1 from M9 on 11 wins was already an over promotion, it allowed him to pick up that precious kinboshi before he becomes a permanent sanyaku fixture and Takayasu was a solid komusubi which proved that the small demotion wasn't an error. Horseshitryu, kiriSHITma and oSHITma were the guys who disappointed at the upper end of the banzuke.

Dan's overpromotion didn't change SHIT since going from M2 to M1 doesn't stop him fighting Yokozuna.

Because you can't look at single rikishi.
Promotions and demotions occur depending on the overall movement of those around them on the banzuke.
Doubly so because everything is decided by a bunch of old men, HOWEVER, this does not imply that they are being racist in their deliberations, just that an algorithm will never produce the same results.

You are high on copium. There is no alternative explanation for not demoting takayasu on a 6-9 record other than racism against Dan.
>>
>>238825
There was big gap of anyone who qualified for the promotion range straddling the bottom of sanyaku and top of mægashira. Dan ended up getting overpromoted by a rank and Takayasu underdemoted by a rank to fill the gap. Both of them did very well in their positions, which justifies the banzuke.

Where does this man rank on the offical /sumo/ power rankings
>>
After last basho we were all so full of energy. /sumo/ was so fast for weeks that there was talk of returning to /sp/. You can tell how much of a let down this basho was story-wise by how slow we are immediately after. We had 2 rival yokozuna and 3 strong sekiwake going into July, and at the end of it the only one who didn't majorly disappoint was WTK, though even he wasn't all that great. Onosato might not seem so bad with 11, but those matches he lost were horrendous. To top it of, it's more likely than not that Kotoshoho will return to being a mid to low maegashira once his injuries inevitably catch up to him again. Hoshoryu better fucking show up ready to go next time.
>>
>>238848
>Onosato might not seem so bad with 11, but those matches he lost were horrendous
no they weren't, he did just fine. one of his 'horrendous' losses was to the eventual yusho winner, how is it 'horrendous' to lose to the guy who is beating everyone else?
>>
>>238848
This basho will be remembered with hindsight as a stage-setter for Takayasu's long-awaited yusho and return to ozeki. That's its narrative role.
>>
>>238850
Presumably Anon thinks the horrenous part is Onosato breaking a record for most kinboshi handed out in one basho. 11-4 isn't a bad yok record on paper but fumbling to four maegashitters is hard to stomach.

I'm fine with the threads returning to a slower pace.
The shitposters have less incentive to be here.
Sure I enjoy a hype "storyline", but thats not what I'm here for.
Sumo is fascinating and engaging so much moreso than what is happening at the top.
That said.
Hosh is pretty beat up and trying to fight more from the front to lessen further injury. He is still a bit under sized and going against most of what he's done till now.
Onosato is clearly still fresh to pro sumo. He walked through univeristy sumo with his size and an exquisite signature weapon.
Judging by his stellar nodowa defense this basho kisenosato can definitely teach him. Another year and more defensive tools under his mawashi and Onosato will be even stronger.

Everyone loses in sumo, but it's about the grind.

>Ukrainian Aonishiki fuels predictions of future ozeki promotion

Although he came up short in his bid for a maiden top-division championship, rising Ukrainian grappler Aonishiki's stellar performance at the recent Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament has some insiders predicting his eventual promotion to the lofty rank of ozeki.

Competing as a No. 1 maegashira, the 21-year-old was in the title race until his loss on the final day of the 15-day tournament to Kotoshoho, who clinched the championship by winning their match on Sunday.

Aonishiki has compiled an impressive 11-4 record in each of his three tournaments in the elite makuuchi division, employing a low-to-the-ground stance that reflects his background in the sport of wrestling as a youth.

Stablemaster Kokonoe, formerly ozeki Chiyotaikai, compared the youngster's dynamic grappling style to that of a past great.

"He reminds me of (former ozeki) Tochiazuma, when he was on his way up," Kokonoe said.

Despite his forward leaning posture, Aonishiki has not been vulnerable to pulling techniques, with one opponent wryly observing that he "never goes down."

Sumo elder Takekuma, formerly ozeki Goeido, said Aonishiki exhibited both excellent strength and technique.

"It shows the strength of his abdominals and back muscles," Takekuma said. "Since both legs are never in line, you can't slap him down."

Stablemaster Asakayama is also among the elders impressed by the emerging European star, having seen firsthand his dedication and will to improve during practice sessions.

"He's focused on one thing, how he can get stronger," Asakayama, formerly ozeki Kaio, said.

Speaking after his loss to Kotoshoho on Sunday in Nagoya, Aonishiki indicated his strong desire to continue climbing toward sumo's upper echelon.

"My sumo life starts from here," he said.

That’s not too far from the truth already, and it’s been that way for some time. Sumo is a pretty insular world.
>>
>>239062
Naya, formerly Hozan, is Oho’s older brother. That guy went to university instead of directly into sumo, so he’s actually the last of the brothers to enter sumo.
When Oho gave up the name Naya, Hozan, as oldest brother, was the one to inherit it, even though baby brother Mudoho had been in sumo longer.
>>
>>238957
Roga, Denuma, Kuwae, 'yama behind him, Nobeharu (what happened to his foot anyways), Tsukioka, Nabatame in back, Wakamiyabi in front, I think Soga then Soma hard to tell with that back/side profile, Kikuchi, Kyoda, then Kaega and Koga in the dohyo
>>
>>239064
I suppose it probably would've looked a little weird if Mudoho had dropped his 'ho' name though so it likely wasn't a Japanese seniority thing.
>>
>>239066
>so it likely wasn't a Japanese seniority thing.
No, it was just “older brother gets the name”.
Hozan (phoenix mountain) uses Taiho’s ho character too.

>2018: Konosuke joins as Naya
>2019: Kosei joins as Mudoho
>2020: Takamori joins as Hozan

Presumably if Naya were to gain salaried level, he would reassume his Hozan shikona.

>>
>>239080
>just look at how the mongs exclusively import their own kind when they become stable bosses
The biggest importer of Mongolians was full-blooded Hokkaido Japanese Asahikuni.
>>
>>239084
Most rikishi are treated like royalty while they're active. They get accustomed to having everything comped. Meals, drinks, clothes, jewelry, etc.
Akebono wanted to stay relevant to keep that lifestyle going. He was only 32 when he retired so he had a lot of years ahead of him still. Nobody wants to go from the limelight straight into obscurity in their early 30s. That's why he did MMA and pro wrestling even though he was shit at both.

>>
>>239089
So they arranged a marriage for him, he said yes, then changed his mind and the club just dissolved, leaving him destitute?
>>
>>239105
More like:

They arranged a marriage for him, he said, “nah, I’m going to marry my girlfriend instead”. This was an insult to the club, the father of the arranged-bride was a member. The club dissolved, meaning he no longer had access to the huge amount needed to buy a permanent kabu. He stayed on in the JSA under his five-year complimentary membership as a former Yokozuna, but then he had to leave.
He was never destitute but he did need to keep fighting because his restaurant went under.
>>
>>239105
>>239106
I mean, if a guy asked me to marry him, and then the following year broke off the engagement to marry someone else, I'd be insulted too.
>>
>>239108

It wasn’t an ask so much as

>club: Akebono is proud to announce his engagement to this beautiful girl!

>Akebono: Hey guys, sorry I’m late, traffic was a motherfucker and…why’s everyone look so happy?

According to him, they decided all of this without telling him.
>>
>>239109
>they decided all of this without telling him
That's just retarded. Are these kind of forced marriages the norm with sekitori?
>>
>>239110
>Are these kind of forced marriages the norm with sekitori?
Less so now than back then, but you’re still expected to give your stablemaster and supporters some input in whom you marry, both in terms of suggesting partners and vetting your picks.

That’s why some guys like Shodai and Ura are still single. The supporters are okay if you refuse to get married altogether.
>>
>>239110
This was back in the mid-90s, when old money still had boomer mentalities regarding carrying on professional lines of succession. It was very common for example for the CEO of a major company to have his daughter marry his intended successor. So applying this to sumo, it's not just finding an acceptable bride for a sekitori, but finding a proper okamisan who will do her proper duty in helping her husband carry on the lineage of the Azumazeki stable, or whichever kabu would've been inherited, and carrying on the proper duties of the sumo association. Rejecting that to them was like Akebono was rejecting his eventual role as an elder.
>>
>>239113
I don’t think he quite understood that aspect of it, either, or he would not have acted like he did.
Or, his towering ego was such that he was like “I’m the untouchable yokozuna! I do as I please.”
He was only 26 at the time so either is a possibility (or a combination of both).
In either case, he stayed with his wife until the end so he did marry for love that lasted.

there ought to be a rule about getting demoted from ozeki if you can't get double digit wins after a few tournaments.

>>239134
Nobody else gets demoted after a winning score, and just making it to ozeki in the first place demands an outstanding performance across at least half a year. If we demote ozeki for 8-7s and 9-6s then we will inevitably have outcomes where sekiwake get promoted to ozeki off an 8-7.

It's just an antiquated production, that's all. It's not really surprising considering it's the official NSK/JSA channel. An organization run more or less exclusively by very old and very traditional men. Clearly their idea for the channel was to ape Japanese television of their youth, and so we have Sumo Prime Time.

Which is great, don't get me wrong, it's great if you love sumo but it's also not really made for real sumo fans like us. It has arisen from a fundamental misunderstanding on their part due to lack of exposure to and knowledge of cutting edge sumo fans like us. Perhaps the London koen will encourage them to think a bit more modern.

Chris fucked up the translation. What he really said was that a strong performance in September could result in an ozeki promotion in November. This is obvious since he was joi-maegashira in July, but it was in the context of him and Kusano both having potential quick rises to ozeki. All the comments Chris quoted were from a Yahoo Japan article Sugiyama wrote yesterday. You can read it yourself if you want.

Chris' error yes, but there were some people under the assumption that it was Sugiyama's error when he did not say what Chris said.
>>
>>239316
>Kusano having potential quick rise to ozeki.
theres a vanishingly small chance of that happening, nearly all of the guys who put up double digits in their makuuchi debut experience subsequent stalls in their rise shortly thereafter. onosato & dan are extremely rare examples of those who didn't. onosho is the only other guy to debut with 3 consecutive double digit scores and the list of those who didn't have an mk in their first three bashoes is almost as exclusive.
kusano will most likely not be able to repeat his performance

to be fair to Hosh, the only man that managed to live up to Asa was Hakuho (and Harumafuji in a few, scant tournaments)

>>
>>239362
Asashoryu won the last tournament he participated in right before being forced to retire, so who knows how well he would have done if he wasn't cut short.
>>
One thing I notice about Hakuho, Asashoryu, Harumafuji, etc is how quickly they're able to get on the belt. Nephew often has to slug his way onto the belt, whereas for the other mongolian yokozuna they almost effortlessly slid onto it. Am I stupid or is there something to this?
>>
>>239363
He definitely could've picked up a few more yusho. Even now, he's got records that not even Hakuho could make.

>>239364
Hoshoryu chooses not to reach for the belt at the tachiai. He pushes at the start and grabs the belt after their momentum is halted or gets inside position with arm grips before consolidating to the belt. Uncle/Hakuho/etc. just grab the belt right at the start.

White people logic amuses me. "He cannot be promoted to ozeki after next basho because he does not meet the criteria for such a promotion, but also because he's not Japanese and you know how racist Japanese people be." I see them make these sort of predictions all the time. It's the most clear cut case of confirmation bias I have ever seen in any area of life, but there is no self-awareness of this among western sumo fans.
>>
>>239585
Retards on reddit, youtube sumo comments, and anywhere that isn't here, are obsessed with muh racism. And really anything at all they find uncomfortable with sumo and want to change.
When mongs with an attitude act like faggots and get the slightest slap on the wrist it's the Sumo Association being racist against all Mongolians. Or like how they had enough of Hakuho when he let his giant baby retard run the place. Yet they have let mongs dominate for 20+ years, chill Mongolians like Tamawashi are still there without any issues, Hosh got a generous promotion, Terunofuji runs his stable now, etc.

And no, Redditor-kun, Aonishiki not getting to jump immediately to sekiwake/ozeki is not racism. If anything they have been very lenient and nice to his compatriot Shishi, which some youtube commentators seem to have dropped and forgotten after having claimed he's ozeki material (lmao), when an actually good Ukrainian showed up.

Japs should be more racist tbdesu.

In May I'd agree since all his losses were against sanyaku but now in July he still won against WTK, Kirishima and a bunch of ex-sanyaku
are we still gonna be coping when he gets an Ozeki promotion after november?

Kirishima was running a high fever in the back end of the basho; it's why his performance collapsed. WTK sure I'll give Dan that one but I'd say Dan's style matches up fairly well there, though WTK apparently had a stomach bug at the start of July.

>Hosh is finished if he doesn't win the next basho
Not a chance they'll get of rid him so fast, he has already proved he's capable of winning a yusho, just not as a yokozuka yet. Reminder Akebono went 3 years without a yusho as a yokozuna.
