The fact that Dan is featured more prominently and more frequently in Japanese media stories about sumo than either of the yokozunæ or the basho winner is proof that Dan is the MC of sumo. He should be featured prominently in the OP pic of this or any other thread about sumo, leaving him out would be a cardinal mistake.

so are we just gonna have 2 active threads up all the time? we could've just used the other one, shit is embarrassing.
>>
>>239892
i think its probably a complicated joke of some sort by one of the dan posters, this thread is supposed to be the non-dan thread while the other established thread was supposed to be ignored by the anti-dans for being a dan thread, but this thread has an image featuring dan slightly more prominently than in the original dan thread so that mean anti-dans are retarded or something.
expect more new 'non-dan' threads featuring images of dan in the future.

nice self-flattering imagination you've got there. "sure I'm massively overweight, but I'm not really fat. I'm a physically fit person who just happens to be carrying 40 lbs of excess body fat around".
the twisted retardation of lardass logic never ceases to amaze me. its about 99% certain that you only like sumo because its one of the few places where you can see lardasses who aren't total failures at life, so you can project on the wrestlers and act like you're not really a fatass loser.
have you seen the fans who actually attend? how many of them are obese like you are?

Sorry i'm a newfag but are the heyas limited to one foreigner?
>>
>>240463
Yes.
>>
>>240463
Yes, one gaijin per beya. They say it's so that beyas can't become ghettos for foreigners, and in fairness less than half of beyas have a gaijin so it's not like anyone's being kept out of joining due to lack of slots. Fun fact, Kataonami-beya has two gaijin, Tamawashi and Tamashoho, due to Tamashoho's stable closing down and they're brothers in law so like whatever. The beya has literally 4 rikishi at it anyway. Tamawashi routinely takes on the two low rank jobbers at the same time in practice bouts because he's a literal sumoGOD and his dick is humongous.
>>
>>240465
>They say it's so that beyas can't become ghettos for foreigners
This is a legitimate point, because the first foreigner ban (though it was unofficial at the time) was because Oshima stable recruited six Mongolians at the same time. If those six were recruited by separate stables instead then there wouldn't have been a problem.

Slightly related question.
Are rikishis advert to more modern muscle training techniques because of the traditions and stuff?
I wonder what would happen if they trained like western strongmens or powerlifters.
>>
>>240491
They do incorporate weight training, the problem is sumo as a whole can't afford modern equipment and trainers. They probably could if they were able to combine funding within ichimon, but resources are spread to thin among heya. So instead of having proper trainers, they just buy whatever cheap weights they can find and self-train with YouTube videos, then wonder why they keep getting injured with shitty form.
The advantage to traditional techniques is they're developed to be relatively low impact, which means much less risk of injuring yourself while training. Getting injured for two months wouldn't be that bad in any other sport, but in sumo it means 0-0-15 for a tournament which sends them plummeting down the banzuke. Missing half a year (three basho) is enough for anyone lower than ozeki to lose their salary completely.
>>
>>240492
>sumo as a whole can't afford modern equipment and trainers
This had better be a fucking joke. All you need is a single half rack, and you don't need (((trainers))) at all. Just google correct form and go do it.

>>
>>240498
There's a difference between doing something and doing something the right way. When it comes to weight training, proper form reduces the chance of injury. But what ends up happening is these guys think they have proper form simply because they're still gaining muscle, without realizing that they actually have shitty form and it's increasing their chance of injury. That's what a trainer is for.

>>

NTA but do they even do deadlifts? I'm pretty sure the fitness game in japan is pretty dire.
Also from the little calisthenics i've did i've seen lots of people who can't even do push ups right, so some people do need help.
>>
>>240503
Good form is free, you don't need a coach. Most rikishi are just low IQ fatsos in daycare who don't want to get a real job.

>>240504
If they can't even do pushups right then there's actually zero help for them. It's like trying to teach an African to build a road.

Thanks for making me laugh by proving you either don't lift or have shittier form than the average rikishi. Enjoy your severe chronic injuries by the time you turn 40.
>>
>>240510
What you're doing is giving me a chance to let you move the goalposts. Even if I did post a video of me lifting you'd immediately tell me why the video doesn't matter.

>You aren't lifting enough weight
>Your back isn't ACTUALLY straight
>>
>>240509
You're objectively wrong because of how the human spine works. It's designed to be flexible. Having a perfectly straight back through repeated lifts is going to feel stiff and unnatural, especially for beginners who aren't used to it. It's because modern weight training is itself unnatural when our bodies evolved for stuff like carrying a large dead animal back home instead of squatting 50 times with that animal on our shoulders every day for 50 years. That's why trainers exist, to get beginners used to proper form so they don't develop bad habits that don't feel wrong in the short term but will lead to increased injury in the long term. And that's why rikishi form is crap, because they're all self-trained beginners who develop bad habits because their form doesn't feel wrong in the short term.
>>
>>240512
These (((trainers))) you admire are teenagers who've taken a 30 minute class.

>>240513

>sumosisters

>>
>>240505
>If they can't even do pushups right

Sumo is a lot more hands off than most other sports when it comes to training. There's a much greater emphasis on self discipline and motivation, and the rikishi that excel are usually the ones that take it upon themselves to supplement their traditional daily training sessions. You can see exactly how lazy they are with form, as even when they do their traditional training, a lot of them have shitty form exactly because they don't give a fuck, and it's up to them to do it right, not the oyakata.
>>
>>240479
There is not much to talk about this time, the guys are on tour, there is no hype surrounding the 2 yokozunas anymore, they've been outed as jobbers so we are back to mistery rikishi yushos again. This is the fundamental issue and why there isn't really a point getting a proper coach in.
>>
>>240544
>isn't really a point getting a proper coach in.

A lot of beya do have proper trainers that work with the boys, just not during normal traditional morning practice. Most of the weight lifting and supervised training is done during the second training sessions in the afternoon/evening time.

The success or failure of a rikishi is dependent solely upon the rikishi in sumo. Oyakata act as a guide and show them the path they are supposed to follow, but it's up to them to take that path. If they want to do the bare minimum and suck, then that's on them, and that includes cheating on everything from form in training, to eating, to doing more than just the bare minimum.

There's a lot of beya, and the more successful ones do, indeed, hire trainers to assist their rikishi.

sumodb finally loaded.
Even extending it to MX->MX->S nobody's done it since 1940 when they only had two basho per year. Starting an ozeki run at maegashira should be considered an exception to the sanyaku rule that only applies to joi-maegashira. In other words, it should be thought of as "prove that maegashira rank was high enough that they faced all the strongest competition" instead of it being an assumed given that sanyaku have.
>>
>>240726
looks like even M->K/S->S promotion runs are pretty rare
and all since 1950 included at least a JY at some point
>>
Do you respect a maegashira with a makuuchi yuusho more or less than a sanyaku without one? Which do you think is the higher achievement?
>>
>>240733
A yusho is a yusho (unless it's a zensho), but if you have to judge then it'd be by quality of competition. Sanyaku always fight the highest guys on the banzuke, so a non-joi maegashira yusho is typically weaker by default.
>>
The average rank of Kotoshoho's Maegashira opponents was M12.4, just saying.
>>

The only two that can be verified are Tochigiyama in 1918, and Musashiyama in 1935. Onishiki in 1917 is a possibility but there are multiple records missing from his lower division basho, although we do know he went from jonidan to juryo in 5 basho so it's likely. But it hasn't happened since 1935, until Onosato. Some have come close, like for example Musashimaru only had one makekoshi in the lower divisions with none in sekitori.

Got curious and compared each YDC yokozuna's promotion run by quality of the guys they beat. No points given for loses or fusen wins, so a high score means they had to fight and beat the highest ranking guys. Obviously Akebono suffers because no yokozuna were on the banzuke, but he also only fought another ozeki once in the two basho because he was the only healthy ozeki in the first one.

Harumafuji's promotion really was something else.

Hakuho promoting women's sumo is utterly revolting, is he going to open a geisha house staffed with men next?
Confusion of da highest orda

It's not the thread split. It's because the British posters (forever the backbone of /sumo/) are posting much less, or not at all, due to the additional hoops to jump through in order to use 4chan. You can see a definite decline in /sumo/ activity when the UK Online Safety Act came into force.
