The last salaried 15-0 was Teru's, and the last active rikishi who pulled that off at all were Teru, Hakuho, and TochinoshinThe spookier thing is that there was a period between 1996 and 2004 where not a single zensho yusho occurred, in the gap between peak Takanohana and Asashoryu. Seems we might be in for those days again
>>268766>>268768The kanji for O means greatness. Onokuni uses the same kanji, but the O wasn't specifically a reference to him. Kisenosato just wanted to combine greatness with -nosato. Onosato was also one of Kisenosato's potential shikona choices before going with what he ultimately used.

>>269008Depends on how you look at it. Asashoryu never had more than two zensho in a row. Nobody has... except for Hakuho who had 4 in a row. Also Hakuho's period of dominance lasted far longer, and not just because Asashoryu was forced out. Asashoryu only won 3+ yusho in a calandar year 4 times to Hakuho's 9.

>>268994>but at the time it wasn't as obvious. At the time it was very obvious. I know because I was there. >>269018>I dislike him because X and YThat's fine, I don't care. The facts are that he got outshined by two rikishi that had a remarkable rise right after he got promoted. You can pretend that at the time it was obvious this would've happened if you want. I think very few at the time could've foreseen the rise of Aonishiki alone, who's probably been his main problem for the last year.
>>269027I don't dislike Hoshoryu, I don't blame him for being promoted before he deserved it, that's the fault of the YDC and JSA. But the truth is, he was promoted before he deserved it. Sumo has gone without yokozuna before, they didn't need to rush Hoshoryu before he was ready. Aonishiki and Onosato are irrelevant because we're talking about Hoshoryu, not them. Based on the body of Hoshoryu's results at ozeki, he was promoted before he was ready. It really is that simple.
>>269027Onosato was rising as Hoshoryu was promoted, he just got lucky as fuck that Onosato took his foot off the gas for two basho.
Baruto x Hakuho Interviewhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_9NWfZOVqu8Did you guys know Hakuho only used to weigh 62 kgs?
>>269030I weighed less than that when I was a chicken nugget in the womb.
>>269028>Hoshoryu's playoff opponents in Aki and Kyushu of last year are irrelevant.
Have Dan haters really now sunk to the level of saying >oy vey Dan has been in sumo almost three whole years and he hasn't even made yokozuna yet!!! he sucks!!!Yes, it seems that they have.
>>269031Burger-san tsuyoi...
>>269032When talking about whether Hoshoryu should have been promoted to yokozuna, yes they are irrelevant. Nobody should have any slack given to them based on who else is on the banzuke. The whole point of yokozuna should be an indication that they were at one point one of the best of the best. Hoshoryu did not earn that distinction.
Imagine if Hosh comes back after his surgery with a zensho.
>>269036he won't even finish the basho lel
>>269035Well then if that's the case than his promotion was certainly warranted because he was the only one on the banzuke who met the criteria. You can't have this both ways.
>>269037I'm going to pick him in kachi clash just to spite you.
>>269028They're relevant because if it wasn't for their rise Hoshoryu would've won multiple cups and the Tatsunami stablemaster wouldn't have made those comments and me and you wouldn't be here now having this discussion. You can say Hoshoryu didn't look like a strong yokozuna candidate at the time and that's fine but that's about it. He met the requirements set by the JSA and after getting promoted he posted results that were more or less in line with what people were expecting from him. He just got outshined by those two and as a consequence was never able to actually yusho.>>269029At the time he got promoted he was 5-1 against Onosato. Again, even just by taking out Aonishiki you'd have a very different picture now.
>>269036He's going to come back and prevent an Aonishiki zensho
>>269040>if it wasn't for their rise Hoshoryu would've won multiple cupsThen Hoshoryu shouldn't be yokozuna, end of story.
>>269042>>268994>In retrospect it was probably a bad idea to promote himGreat, we agree!
Hosh's 13-2JY was a yusho equivalent and everyone saw it clear as day. It was followed with an exciting yusho. His promotion was fine, stop being gay.
>He's clearly not worthy because he lost to these two people who aren't relevant to the discussion.
For me, it's a Kiri yusho and then failing to get a single double-digit performance next year as yokozuna
Kiri is underrated, just a solid consistent intelligent worker, not top level but not everyone can be
>>269046>>269047
>>269048Damn and people call British teeth bad.
>>269045He's not worthy because he lost. Who he lost to is irrelevant. He should be judged entirely on his individual performance. Saying "but he lost to these guys" is an irrelevant excuse, not a relevant justification.
>KiriY'all are talking about Kirinryu right?
>>269050>He should be judged entirely on his individual performance. He was. That's why he was promoted. Because his individual performance was worthy. You're trying to use his performance AFTER that to say he wasn't worthy. That's wrong and gay.
Anyone saying Hoshoryu didn't deserve promotion didn't watch those two basho. First he was an unstoppable judoka who only lost to Zak having the basho of his life, then he was Captain Clutch who ran his dick through the entire Sanyaku then dominated a three way playoff. Fuck outta here with that he didn't deserve it shit.
I miss his wild throws. The fact he had to change up his style after becoming yokozuna is reason alone for wishing he didn't get the promotion.
>>269054His ipponzeoi against WTK is one of the coolest moments in sumo.
>>269055
>>269056There was another throw against WTK a bit back where he made the fucker flip in mid air and land on his ass, that was cool too.
>>269057Got you.
>>269052His individual performance was worse than every previous yokozuna promotion 35 years prior to him. His performance after is irrelevant.
>He's not worthy because he lost.>His performance after is irrelevant. You're just going in circles contradicting yourself. Give it up.
>>269063He did in fact lose many times before he was promoted, and in fact lost more times than any other yokozuna promotion 35 years prior.
>>269065You set the cut-off point at 35 years for arbitrary reasons. Curious!
>>269065But enough about his irrelevant losses, how about his 13 win junyusho and his 14 win yusho? Where's that sit in your ranking?
>>26906637 years and 2 months if you want me to be precise. 8 months if you consider Onokuni zensho'd the basho before his run.
>>269068Curious!
>>269069I mean, if you think "Hoshoryu's promotion was the worst since the era where yokozuna promotions were so bad that one of them got kicked out without a yusho in his entire career and they very clearly and explicitly tightened the promotion standards after that" is arbitrary then that's your problem.Personally I think a yokozuna should be more than "average ozeki."
>>269070I don't think it's arbitrary, I think it's flat out false.
>>269070Ozeki are expected to get 10 wins. Hoshoryu got a 13-2JY and 12(+2)-3Y.
The very fact that there is a debate about Hoshoryu's worthiness of a yokozuna in and of itself suggests there are legitimate questions. For example, no one would say that Onosato is unworthy of the rank. (I mean, someone could, but they'd be arguing in bad faith and would thus be easily dismissed.)
>>269074Onosato is what Hoshoryu defenders think Hoshoryu's promotion was. Onosato earned his promotion, he had a solid body of performance leading up to it, there was no lowering of standards because he had two yusho in a row, and his lack of performance since then has clearly been due to injury. Saying he didn't deserve promotion would be actual hindsight logic. Hoshoryu by comparison plainly did not deserve promotion at the time, and they had to lower the standards to a level not seen since the late 80s because some YDC fucks wanted their egos stroked.
>they had to lower the standards to a level not seen since KisenosatoIFTFY
>>269076>because some YDC fucks wanted their egos stroked. Also, there was panic about the upcoming London tour being without a yokozuna.
>>269077Kisenosato had more wins for his promotion run, and had a much stronger ozeki tenure than Hoshoryu. Don't get me wrong, Kisenosato's was the previous standard for "worst since Onokuni", but Hoshoryu's was worse than his. That's how low the bar was for Hoshoryu, "worse than Kisenosato."
>>269079>Kisenosato had more wins for his promotion runNo he didn't. He had 26 to Hoshoryu's 25[+2].
>>26908026 is larger than 25, anon.
>>269077To be fair to Kisenosato (not that he deserves it) he did win his first basho as yokozuna and, thus, did win two basho in a row. It's a symbolic gesture but it's meaningful all the same. And his five-year tenure as ozeki (in which he competed against Hakuho, Harumafuji, and Kakuryu) he still had 11 jun-yushos and only 7 basho where he scored single-digit wins.
>>269081And smaller than 25[+2], which you know but are ignoring for your own purposes.
NEW>>269087>>269087>>269087
>>269019He's the first guy to earn his promotion unambigiously with back-to-back yusho since Harumafuji. You can't say he didn't earn that rope.
>>269094>You can't say he didn't earn that rope.He didn't say that.
>>269080>>269083And those [+2] are to maegashitters who've never been as successful before or since. But Hosh nuthuggers will die on the hill that Oho and Kinbozan are just as good wins as beating Hakuho twice in back-to-back basho.
>>269096>He should be judged entirely on his individual performance.Read the full convo or fuck off.
>>269036Horse's zensho? 0-15 with 15 kinboshi dispensed
>>269058might as well ask, do you have the hoshoryu kotozakura recent one? ended up with hoshoryu judo throwing koto after lifting his leg to the fucking ceiling?Either earlier this year or late last year
>>269134https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ufO8ujFyar8Nvm found it myself
