It’s crazy to really consider how short a sumo career really is. I realized the other day that I haven’t been watching that long but I’ve seen every match of Ōhō’s entire career.
>>
>>269615
I wouldn't say 8 years is that short of a time. My first basho was July 24.
>>
>>269615
At least it's proportionate to the sumo wrestler's short lifespan. Most of these guys not even seeing the 70s is nuts.
>>
>>269619
The average lifespan in Japan isn't as long as you've been led to believe since there's a ton of fraud that happens regarding claiming pensions for old people who the authorities haven't been told have died.

>>
>>269621
Yeah but the average wrestler only makes it to between 60 and 65 years old.
Even in chronically unhealthy America that's considered dying young.

The global average for men is 70.55 years. Living to 65 years is like being born in Uganda.

Even if there's rampant pension fraud in Japan, an average of 84 years is roughly in line with other countries of similar levels of economic development.
>>

This might be an indication that he is going to undergo surgery; surgeons often recommend losing some weight before procedures. For an average person, such a request would usually only apply to abdominal surgery (since that is where most people carry excess weight), but for a sumo wrestler, there could be complications regarding shoulder surgery—if I recall correctly, it was his left shoulder, a sensitive area due to its proximity to the heart. They likely want to avoid the risk of post-operative inflammation causing complications.

It’s incredible; we’re reaching the boundaries of reality, brushing up against the dimension of the "eternal circus."

>Hoshoryu MIGHT or MIGHT NOT participate in this basho
>Aonishiki MIGHT NOT PARTICIPATE—who knows?

If Hoshoryu participates, Aonishiki will be forced to "rest" (even though he won the last basho in worse condition)—all just to give Hoshoryu a chance to win a basho and secure another year and a half of "playing Yokozuna."

On the other hand, if Aonishiki participates, and Hoshoryu won't, that could mean the YC and JSA have given up on Hoshoryu and are going to try to make Aonishiki the next Yokozuna. Picture it: a basho with one absent Yokozuna, another injured Yokozuna, and a "Jelly Ozeki"... Aonishiki would only have to beat Kirishima (he's Mongolian, so that's in the bag) and Atamifuji (50% chance of winning? Maybe higher? With Atami, it always depends on how nervous he is).

One thing is clear: they can't have Hoshoryu in a tournament while Aonishiki is available—because if it comes down to the final days, that scenario immediately spells defeat for Hoshoryu.

If they are truly thinking about "asking him to retire," the next 2–3 tournaments will be decisive: will they try to force Onosato to get surgery? Will they make Aonishiki "rest" for a whole basho over something as minor as a headache? As skilled as Hoshoryu is, in his situation, he needs to eliminate these variables (and the JSA might just want to do him that favor). Are we truly in the twilight of Mongol dominance in sumo?
>>
