I watched Pani Poni Dash for the first time during the Christmas stream and while watching it, I decided to count how many TL notes appeared on screen for each episode of the Oyasumi and gg release of the anime that was used on the stream. However, I had to miss the last few days of the stream and I wasn't able to finish my TL note count during the stream. It's a hybrid of Di Gi Charat-style weirdo gag Moe and the schoolgirl setup Azumanga Daioh pioneered. A lot of people, SHAFT included, would smooth out the style later, but you're basically watching the template of a "standard cute girls gag anime" being formed in real time as the show goes on.And unlike it's successors, PPD has a flippant disregard on if the jokes land or on making the characters digestible. There's a prickliness to it which makes it refreshing as someone who doesn't really like the style of CGDCT that comes afterward.You have to work for it a little, not just with le eben references but to match its pace.
