Chapter 66It's been a while but it's time for another volume. Previously, Shima and Hatsushiba were having to deal with a partnership with Chufa that seemed to be a little two-faced as they had to deal with some false advertising Chufa was putting out while at the same time, politicians and Japanese business leaders were debating what the launch of the Shenzhou 5 space mission meant more broadly for China's emerging global role.However, the main story development was the return of Noriko which was brought about by the passing of another member of the Hatsushiba old guard when Oizumi died following a bad fall. With Oizumi gone, Noriko decided to move to Beijing to take over the snack bar Oniyama and after arriving, immediately caught the eye of Chufa's CEO Sun Rui. The two entered into a relationship with Sun at first trying to hide his status but eventually revealed it after learning the Noriko's ex-lover was Shima. Trying to compete with Shima, he held a large party to introduce Noriko as the woman he loved but Noriko would leave in huff... a ploy on her part to show Sun who was really in control in their relationship.

Gendo thought that by 'giving' Shinji Rei III and then taking her away, Shinji would double down, harden his hard, and become a professional user of people. That he would try to use Gendo and Gendo could try to use him and they could be bad people together. Instead Shinji finally gets it. Rei III was not his love interest. She was not his therapist. She was not 'for' him at all. She was a person that went about living her own life when he wasn't looking and the tragedy of her short lifespan wasn't that it made him feel bad but that her own life was over. He experienced genuine sonder for the first time in his life and understood intuitively that other people are people too and not just talking objects in his path to be assessed as either assets or obstacles. The exact opposite of EoE Shinji's lowest point of declaring 'I feel really really bad about a lot of things and nobody likes me so everyone and myself should just die'
