I picked up the manga a couple of weeks ago and read from the point where Kafka's secret was revealed up until #9's next powerup a few chapters after this season's ending. That was around chapter 50 in the manga. I wasn't really feeling it, so I decided to quickly check out the latest chapters (from around chapter 100) to see what to expect before wasting more of my time, and what I found was the continuation of the same fucking fight with the powered-up #9. I would have gone through 50 more chapters of filler just to get to the conclusion (?) of that trash monster of the week plot. Nothing I read made me feel like I had missed any information. It was like that time I accidentally skipped 2 volumes of Hajime no Ippo and didn't realize it until much later because it started with Ippo getting up from a similar knockdown during the same fight. Number 9 is a lame monster that should have been turned into dust by his second appearance at most, not kept as the main antagonist. Having a bland Cell knockoff as the main enemy in a kaiju manga is just retarded.

It's a very mid Manga but done with a kino theme. Kaiju is awesome, but it doesn't have any interest to do such a rare theme if the narrative is just Naruto / my hero academia. It's all the esthetic but without the substance. The main appeal of kaiju is describing the horrors of war, and Kaiju 8 is the most tame kaiju media in this department.

I can't speak to the quality of the manga since I haven't read it, but this anime was definitely better than mid. I disagree with your view about the theme as well, relegating kaiju stories to horrors of war documentaries is a very limited mindset and ironically would make them predictable in a different way, which ties in to the complaint I was addressing.
A story doesn't need to be groundbreaking subversion nor an exemplar of its genre to be good.

In the end it’s a story about rekindling themselves after what they went through and the anime did a good job about showing how much she still cares about him.

Their interactions are meant to be cathartic. He could have done something better tho, the anime made a good job showing she cares a lot about him showing it instead of off screen things.
Also it’s finally some months that the manga is focusing on these two after some time.
