So while there is definitely some visual difference between, say, the Kyoto Animation works and Shaft's, they all kinda flow in the same big river. But the visual styles of western animation are basically not even in the same ocean.

Another problem is how visually cliched and predictable anime is. Here's an example you all will instantly recognize. Typical comical situation in anime: character A is facing some funny punishment, Characters B and C are slowly approaching with evil smiles. Suddenly camera goes outside the building and upwards to the sky with Character A screaming "Tasukete" or just "AAAAH" in the background. And this happens in pretty much every anime with any comic relief (in other words, in like 90% of anime) WITHOUT ANY CHANGE TO THE FORMULA. Why? Why can't the animators just show us the supposed funny punishment in detail for a change?

Finally, there is this weird idea the anime creators have that if they draw a human person, that person has to be more or less realistic. Why? Why every anime girl looks exactly like the other? Why they all have 5 fingers, for example? Homer Simpson is yellow and has 4 fingers, does the audience think he's an alien because of that? No, they don't.

Anime used to be revolutionary. Chibi deformations, for instance, is a big and irreplaceable part of anime and part of why anime is so instantly recognizable globally. But while the western animation was brave enough to change and borrow and learn from anime (something like Teen Titans use chibi style too), anime kinda stopped changing imo. There are anime that try to change the visual style radically (like Panty and Stocking, Inferno Cop, Pop Team Epic) but they are too few and far between in the myriads of long-legged, huge-eyed clones that fill the medium.
