The 1st half of Gun arc was necessary for those deaths to have the impact they did, while Church is the analog for Nayuta (if she's actually just dead). Aki and Power's relationship wasn't sold nearly as much as Denji's with them. Also that was endgame, and this is midgame. I'm not 100% convinced that Nayuta's situation is "dead, that's it" either.
