Obviously. It's a bog-standard psyop; promote things that are guaranteed to make people unhappy, unfulfilled, and divided and sell them a solution in the form of whatever product/legislation/war/etc. will line their pockets and advance their interests.

They've been having a meltdown because of the lack of Yuri licenses this year. Then no publisher announced any Yuri at AX. Seven Seas announced mostly BL at this licensing event and the yurifags are attacking them hard.

Chinese BL.
The first 3 Seven Seas licensed had the biggest debut in Seven Seas history. https://sevenseasentertainment.com/2021/12/23/mo-xiang-tong-xiu-mxtx-becomes-triple-new-york-times-best-selling-author-in-one-week-with-seven-seas-debut-of-danmei-novels/

They keep licensing them and each one sells astronomically well. It's generally believed that some of Seven Seas weird/old licenses over the past 2 years are because they can afford to take risks now due to danmei money.

Yeah the surveys matter. But the people who group up to suggest stuff are more likely to get some action. The Case Files of Jeweler Richard was in the top 10 for both manga and light novels before we announced it.

We use a lot more demographic and genre information to assist with making choices too. If we can't get something or can't make something work, then we'll look for something similar or something shorter to test the waters.

>Were that many people really requesting isekai NTR?
Not this one. But, there's another NTR series that people are submitting pretty often. It's more expensive so this is a test for it.

>>268696627
>>268697073

Classics prior to the 1990's don't really sell well unfortunately.

>Ishinomori
We looked at Cyborg 009. It's very expensive. Kamen Rider Black has licensing issues, we looked at it as a follow up to the OG Rider series.

>Monkey Punch
The second Lupin III Classic Collection sold badly and killed any interest in doing more Monkey Punch works. Sorry.

>Go Nagai
Blame Cutie Honey. She sold extremely bad. Like, EXTREMELY bad. Mazinger Z and Mao Dante were planned for the second wave. The idea was to try and do 2 of his shorter series each year and anchor the classics line around Go Nagai.

For other shit...
I think Stop!! Hibari-kun! will happen at some point. There's a licensing issue due to the change from Shueisha to Shogakukan. If they get that sorted, expect either us or Viz Media to release it.

1990's classics seem to be doing alright. Spriggan, Marmalade Boy and Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou all did well. Gravitation has had a bit of a slow start but it's not terrible. We have another 1990's shoujo to announce later this year.

Tell men to buy more diverse genres of manga, and older manga. There's a reason we keep licensing isekai manga that are practically the exact same thing with a different title. Men.

At this time, if there are any classics you want and they are shoujo, send them in the survey. And don't submit Glass Mask, Patalliro or Crest of the Royal Family. They aren't happening.

>Due to Crybaby everyone had higher expectations.
My hatred for Crybaby has increased to levels previously thought impossible.

>Tell men to buy more diverse genres of manga, and older manga.
I do whenever I can, especially since a lot of older manga have that masculine power fantasy element to them that they would enjoy.

I bought this up in a previous thread, but I did suggest stocking issues might also be a factor in low sales as well. Normalfags are less likely to veer from their comfort zone if they can't flip through a title in a physical store.

>And don't submit Glass Mask, Patalliro or Crest of the Royal Family. They aren't happening.
Not shoujo (though it is certainly inspired by it), but how often has Bastard!! popped up in those surveys? I know it's a huge undertaking considering all the different Japanese releases and pedigree, but I want to know if Viz is also an issue in licensing it (this also applies to other oop titles held by previous publishers, active or not.)

You answered your own question. Their business model is to buy cheap, unknown IPs and release them to foreign markets with a shoestring budget and staff. Very limited downside risk, and sometimes these b-tier manga make a modest impact (hurry the fuck up with One Room Hero already).
>>
>>268699826
>how often has Bastard!! popped up in those surveys
It's very high. The license is expensive. But it'll also have some controversy due to the naming changes required and the updates made to the first 2 volumes.

I don't think anyone will ever license Bastard!! again. They'll have youtubers claiming censorship for views due to the names and others arguing over the artwork.

>Josei good?
Josei's doing better lately. If they're short then suggest them.

Random manga is cheap, that is why there are a ton of companies localizing series right now. If something like Manga Planet or Comikey can get a fairly large library, Seven Seas with actual significant sales can get as much as they want in terms of random unknown manga.
>>
>>268701150
>I don't think anyone will ever license Bastard!! again. They'll have youtubers claiming censorship for views due to the names and others arguing over the artwork.
That is unfortunately a good point. Netflix leaving most of the names unchanged would have everyone's expectations for the manga to retain the names sky high. All that and its length being a whopping 27 volumes total would be overwhelming for any publisher. Really makes me appreciate Bastard anon's efforts even more.

Thanks for the responses. Learning the classic manga didn't sell well was very disheartening, but it's nice to finally have an answer, and I'm very glad you managed to publish what you did. Same with all the other, more modern titles I enjoy that have also underperformed.

>>
>>268721387
There's 2 possibly.

A young looking boys nipple is censored on the cover of Gravitation volume 1. But then the artwork is repeated inside the book uncensored.

Made in Abyss 12 has the cover image text coincidentally covering a nipple. But then the image is repeated after like 2 or 3 pages and it's uncensored.

So the uncensored images are still there, just not on the cover. Probably to reduce the karens from complaining.
