i really enjoyed his duel against someone who had a powercreep deck and turned the tables. Manjoume is a great duelist but also hated how deliberately made him lose to judai.
Also i thought kaiba built the school but now it seems like the academia existed before or perhaps kagemaru made connections with kaiba and suggested where to build said academia knowing full well it was the perfect chance to collect duelist energy

Well, in about two weeks they're revealing the cover theme for the next main set Supreme Darkness. There's a high chance it will be Supreme King Judai and Evil Heros. The set will come out in October.
Also they've started doing retrains for older structure decks, but they've started skipping some of them. They just revealed Atlantean support in ROTA, which means that they're skipping the Atlantean structure deck, which means that the next two structure decks that'll receive support are either Cyber Dragons or Masked Heros.

I think Pot of Greed was used in every anime duel at least once.
Not surprising because of how useful the card is. I think it was during the last manga storytime where it was mentioned that Pot of Greed was only used ocne or twice in the manga.

Also forgot to mention it took 47 episodes for Graceful Charity to actually be used in GX in comparison to Pot of Greed's GX debut in ep 5.
>>
>>269121578
At that point, it'll be a harder challenge to list the current GX duels that didn't use Pot of Greed.
>>
I wish someone actually used an Alien deck in GX. I loved that archetype.

>>

>>
>>269122134
Looking at Graceful Charity's banlist history, it was unbanned in March 2005 on Japan, while GX's 47th episode aired in August 24 that year. Don't know how much production time the staff had before the episodes aired on TV though.

I think it wasn't used ever in the original series. Kaiba used Chaos Emperor Dragon during the Ziegfried filler. And I think Yugi used the original ritual monster Black Luster Soldier in the Mai duel in Duelist Kingdom.

Black Luster Soldier's ritual form was part of yugi's main deck during duelist kingdom. he also used it in Yu-Gi-Oh R, along with Dragon Master Knight
anyway, no, BLS Envoy was banned in the September '05 banlist, well after CED.

I think there's two big factors playing into this.
1) the anime is extremely autistic about keeping track of hand sizes while the manga is not. The anime never just wings it and hope nobody notices, if a character needs extra cards to pull off a combo they'll give them some draw-card like pot of greed to accomplish that.
2) cards in the original manga are a lot more powerful than those in the anime. In the anime they use many different cards together to achieve some effect while in the manga most effects are achieved by single cards alone, so the hand-resources are being depleted much less. Which I guess makes sense, if you're drawing a manga and you only have a limited number of pages and panels to work with you're not gonna be able to visualize some insane solitaire-combo-play.

yeah but the new cards sucked ass and no one ran them anyway and very few bread and butter cards were on the banlist, and those that were mostly were just limited (like magic cylinder)
you'd still absolutely run negate attack over heroes unite or super junior. waboku also wasn't even limited, so he'd be able to run that as well.
it'd be one thing if the new cards were at least as good or did something similar + an archetype specific ribbon effect
this is less of a problem in later parts of GX, but something that always put me off even as a kid was how jaden's decks always utterly fucking sucked while he won pretty much every duel
at least yugi's bad decks still had feasible win conditions, konami was just really lazy with a lot of SP/ST cards at the time in general because of how prevalent effect monsters were becoming.
>>
>>269136391
>yeah but the new cards sucked ass and no one ran them anyway
Well, also keep in mind that at the time, while it was still common for people to look for specific cards to buy, the main method for acquisition was still through packs, so it didn't really matter that no one ran a card if they still included it in booster packs with cards people DID want, which was konami's go-to strategy for DM at the time.
>>
You know, with fusion being the new hotness in GX, i'm still surprised we didn't get any characters who really promoted rituals with the big ritual knobslob the release of advanced ritual arts and manju/senju gave to all the ritual monsters.
was yugioh still too new for there to be a yugiboomer outside of that one character who stole a deck that yugi didn't actually use in the DM anime?

it's probably my greatest criticism of GX. i agree with the anon earlier who said that they really fucked up there compared to even duel monsters just because at least yugi's shit decks still had some kind of composition or strategy
>>
>>269140198
I think what bothers me about it is that most of the people he wins against have much better decks than his - usually in a composition sense if not literally having better cards - while most of the people he loses against also have decks as shitty as, if not worse than, his

t. always had bad luck
>he honestly doesn't lose often enough
I was also impressed because I assumed this was way more than Yugi's losses/assumed Yugi never lost at all, considering people's lives or the world or whatever ended up generally being at stake
>meanwhile all the shows characters can't stop polishing his cock
I'm a bit biased but it's honestly hard to blame them
>>
>>269140269
he has no deck comp. he just has a bunch of elemental heroes, fusion cards, polymerization, and random sp/tp cards with no cards to help him search or mill
his strategy is quite literally just to get lucky.
>heart of the cards
the anime, but especially the dub, overplayed what was really being said about this, which was basically just an allegory for karma - which makes more sense with the context of season 0/the early manga being largely about atem meting out ironic punishments to villains. when he tells kaiba that he believes in the heart of the cards (and later that kaiba can't win because he doesn't) it's him basically telling kaiba that he won't win because the laws of the shadow game dictate those with evil hearts will be punished. that's why yugi is never in danger of losing a shadow game until he starts dueling other people who have egyptian voodoo bullshit in their bag.
i prefer "heart of the cards" (in duel monsters) because in the context of the kind of show DM was, it made sense, being appropriated by yugi as a metaphor for the nature of shadow games
>i assumed yugi never lost at all
yugi loses pretty frequently. the format of duel monsters was generally that there'd be a lot of lower stakes duels that would build to an arc's finale, where yugi would have some wins and some losses because the consequences for losing were narratively acceptable. there were even times he lost actually important duels too, like in the (anime only) season 4 where yugi's soul gets stolen because of he loses a cardgame, leaving atem solely in charge of the body for the rest of the season
>I'm a bit biased but it's honestly hard to blame them
i mean, it's fine to like him and all that, but it is very easy to blame them. it's retarded that the objective worst fucking duelist at the academy is praised by pretty much everyone, including most of the staff and some of the best duelists on the planet.
>>
>>269140269
>I could be misremembering/be misinformed, but wasn't he also just someone who was just barely passing in the dropout dorm for years?
he failed his first year, and is in his 2nd when the show starts retaking his freshman year
he drops out before even finishing his first academic year. granted he didn't want to drop out and was pressured to do so by his father.

it didn't really feel out of place for him to be drawing into combos because he had cards that were conducive to drawing functioning fucking hands unlike judai who usually bricks before magically drawing the EXACT and PRECISE card that EXACTLY AND PRECISELY WOULD ONLY BE USEFUL IN HIS DECK in THIS EXACT AND PRECISE SITUATION and which under ordinary circumstances would make no sense to be ran

Professor Chronos is genuinely a godly teacher. He pushes all of his students' boundaries, weaknesses, faults, and criticizes them and tests them at every opportunity, relentlessly, always forcing them to grow and improve and never letting them get complacent. You can claim this is accidental on his part of just being a dick, but it's the result nonetheless and the Italian man was born to teach. I would even say that there was no one audacious enough like him to successfully teach Judai, as the things he did to Judai was the only extreme form of teaching that would ever work on Judai in the first place (and it was quite effective). Knowing Kaiba and his extreme expectations, way of doing things, and "trial by fire" attitude, I think he would be highly impressed with Professor Chronos.

I personally would expect nothing less of the greatest dueling academy in the world and mediocre shitters should get expelled. Judai became a dueling legend thanks to his time at Duel Academy under Chronos, whereas episode 1 Judai was just some lucky chickenshit scrub. He did outgrow the academy by the end of the series and it was rightfully time for him to fly out of the nest, but Duel Academy was paramount to his development. Chronos was successful and an effective teacher for Judai.

I played more MtG rather than Yugioh, so maybe I just don't know how deck comp/synergy works in this game, these look like faster and fun games than multiple-episode duels where cards you won't pull will do things they can't do.
And oh! I remember the early no-duel shadow games! That was a bit fun, albeit completely different. I don't think I read much past season 0 though, so I didn't catch the karma stuff, thank you. It being a thing of good and evil makes it sound like a much better show to watch. I guess this also allows Kaiba to win if he's fighting evil? Or were shadow games only done by people with Egypto bullshit?
>being appropriated by yugi as a metaphor for the nature of shadow games
Alright, fair enough if it's regular innocent Yugi.
>loses pretty frequently

judai is pretty much jonouchi if he were the main character, kekw
He effectively doesn't run a backrow because all his spell and trap cards are all highly situational no-sells
and granted i actually understand why they did this because they wanted to highlight the abilities of his powerful effect cards through fusion monsters
they just executed it really poorly throughout most of the early and middle content of GX.
johan's deck is actually the same kind of gimmick in the sense of putting emphasis on his effect monsters to replace the utility of a dedicated backrow of spells and traps, but it's much better composed because they made crystal beasts an actual real archetype so jesse wasn't constantly bricking and praying to the egyptian gods to grant him a destiny draw

I really want to like him, so this sounds great. I mean, the episode I'm on (5) is about to test whether Judai's soul can leave his body or not, but I'm excited to see Cronos' teachings take effect. And yeah, certainly him being a fellow Obeliskchad with elitist standards would certainly align with Kaiba, all the more if he's testing and sharpening his students.
>mediocre shitters should get expelled
But the bald chairman wants to give a wider range of students a chance, which is also fine since like, maybe there's people with good talent or potential that haven't been taught in a way that works for them. >I played more MtG rather than Yugioh, so maybe I just don't know how deck comp/synergy works in this game,
good decks in DM and GX flow by having win conditions and backrows, which are generally achieved with support cards that assist in searching or milling. the only card like this judai runs is pot of greed, until it gets banned and stops showing up in the show.
most of judai's cards serve no purpose to his overall deck strategy because he doesn't have an overall deck strategy; which SHOULD be pumping out his e-hero fusions and then protecting them when they're on the field, meaning he should be running cards like sangan, burial, etc. and at least some kind of removal or protection in his backline. instead he runs mostly random filler garbage that, through the power of plot convenience, just happens to be useful for that particular episode and then never appears again. i was happily shocked at the one, uno, (1) time he used mirror force.
>tl;dr good decks always are built around either a core strategy or a set of potential strategies and all the cards in the deck are there to serve a purpose in making specific plays. judai does not do that and still wins 99% of the time, and everyone pretends he's good at the game despite just being inhumanly lucky.

All of the shit Chronos puts Judai through ironically teaches Judai despite his intentions. Chronos does hate him and is trying to get him expelled (initially), but he doesn't realize that his episodic schemes are the sort of fun and challenging tribulations that Judai actually likes and grows from. Judai wasn't a normal student by any means. If this is your first viewing of GX, there is actually a reason for this you'll find out later.
>But the bald chairman wants to give a wider range of students a chance, which is also fine since like, maybe there's people with good talent or potential that haven't been taught in a way that works for them
True. But you need different perspectives to run a truly great scholarly institution, some balance between "let's give kids a chance" and "shitters have no business here". Also, the Chairman is much friendlier than Chronos because he has a different role. Chronos has to actually instruct and oversee the shitters and jobbers he enrolls.

he's seen as being on the same level of duelist as celebrities like ryo, and prodigies like edo and johan
he just gets discriminated against because his grades are otherwise shit and he's DIRTY RED OSIRIS TRASH
>sho
eventually makes it to ra yellow, yeah. his issues as a duelist are mostly in his own head because of ryo taking a fat verbal shit all over him when they were younger. him getting a little more self assured and believing in himself is what allows him to start flourishing.
his complex was to the point of not using good cards he owns and deck strategies he can employ simply because he gets ptsd flashbacks to his brother telling him not to bother using cards like that until he can stop being retarded
judai shouldn't, and doesn't, advance past osiris red because his grades on quite literally everything except practical assessments for dueling are some of the worst in the school
the only named character to score worse than him academically is hayato.

>And oh! I remember the early no-duel shadow games!
most of the early shadow games were effectively examinations of that chapter's villain's character. the games, "technically" weren't rigged, but effectively were because they were set up in such a way that the evil or bad qualities of their personalities would lead them to lose. the season 0 anime also had a lot of substantially different shadow games that muddied the water on that, for example, the very first one with tetsu in the anime featured him playing a card game with yugi where they scaled the top of the school with distance measured by playing cards. he loses, but there wasn't a penalty for losing until he tried to attack yugi for the money that was used to bait him. ostensibly in this shadow game the illusionary money was used as bait because tetsu's greed would cause him to cheat, but it's also possible he would have just won anyway and just happened not to, so as cool as the whole sequence was i still prefer the manga, where yami yugi uses the money and a knife to play five finger chicken with tetsu instead, where they would have to stab inbetween their fingers to get each bill of yen, all without being able to see their hands because it's been covered by money
tetsu became increasingly strung out as the game progressed and his greed and the ease of which he'd resort to violence prompted him to threaten yugi with the knife instead to make him hand over all the money, resulting in him being punished. Unlike the anime, this was very clearly set up to take advantage of the bad parts of his personality to ensure he'd be punished no matter what with no actual room for him to avoid it without just not being a bad person.
and if he weren't a bad person, he wouldn't be in a shadow game with yami yugi.
>tl;dr most of early yugioh was about karma, and even the season 0 anime often fucked that up for the purpose of having a more spectacular visual presentation. i still like it tho

>>
>>269140577
It's hard to say which decks are "structured well". If we use the actual TCG as the standard, then Yugi's deck is pretty bad in comparison (assuming this was back in DM and we're not talking about modern Yu-Gi-Oh!). If we just consider the anime as the standard, that makes things too subjective as the duel writer(s) can just write whatever cards they want and when and if they appear or not. SituationalTheCard would then just be called "good structure", even though it usually useless or too situational in reality.

Thematically, I think Yugi's deck is cool, but his cards didn't have a ton of synergy. You might say that was intentional, as all of Yugi's duels are supposed to be unique and having the same wincon every game would be boring and not aligned with Atem (King of Games) and Yugi (The King of Games). Yugi's duels often reflect his opponent more, which I thought was always cool.

>>269141012
>ok so a deck's supposed to have a theme for synergy/buffs
Well, archetypes are basically mandatory now unlike back then, but at the time of GX it was more so that they were supposed to just have cards that propelled them towards their win conditions, whether that be a specific monster, a set of monsters, or getting certain cards in play in the backline
some characters who have the same kinds of gimmicks as judai without having shit decks like judai are jesse and edo. edo more prominently because he actually runs a hero deck too.
the issue is just that judai, unlike virtually every other character in GX who is considered a good duelist, is able to pretty much always get all of his good cards out without any real hand set up, as his hands are usually bricks of random filler he happens to be using that episode.
>I guess the strategies or lack thereof didn't feel pointedly obvious to me, since things just happen to work out for him every duel
yeah, pretty much, GX is best enjoyed if you don't think about the actual card gameplay too much and just take each episode as it is

they are, in the context they're being used in.
like duelist kingdom incorporating extra rules that allowed curse of dragon to effect the field, among other type/element effects and dragon champion gaia was a solid beatstick given that "the strongest ATK in duel monsters is 3000!!! (until we start getting into god cards and BEUD and etc. lol)"
filler cards like beaver warrior also actually worked in yugi's deck because it was tribute and ritual fodder.

No they really aren't. Most of DM's "strategy" is to sit on cards for 20+ turns or burn through cards quickly and then use cards of sanctity to refill the hand, because otherwise the duels would be even more of a slog.
>>
>>269141141
Yeah, no, I vaguely remember the early games were really easy if you weren't someone completely blinded by greed, think it was like
>knife the dollar bills on top of your hand without stabbing yourself, earn free money
Oh, I didn't know it was between their fingers.. like, sometimes I do like fair games, but other times if it's set up to punish evil, I don't mind a little bit of harmless shadow entrapment. I thought the early bits were very fun. Like how some mangas had fun bits about general gambling or life, before they became solely about (also very fun) mahjong.
>>269141261
>archetypes are mandatory now
I mean, the only thing that tempted me to try playing was literally finding out a fucking King of Skull Servants existed. I had two of those basic motherfuckers from the oldest sets.

>Edo
The cute trillionaire that Pegasus puts in his top 5! Iirc he's one of the ones who wins against Judai?
>bricks of random filler
Does- I'm getting a forboding feeling. Does his fucking deck comp change between episodes? Does the randomness of his cards just change randomly? Because aside from maybe "switches your and their monster" stuff, most things like monster reborn etc seemed like good spells and traps to have.
>GX is best enjoyed if you don't think about the actual card gameplay too much and just take each episode as it is
I recall the framing and the light-hearted premise appealed to me as a kid. Now it's the pacing, Cronos becoming a fren, the eventual arcs that come after, and the pretty boys and tiddymommies, and the lack of stress about wanting to "pull good cards to beat kids at school, just like my friends Jaden and Alexis".

Yuma does have a good deck, both gameplaywise and thematically. He can shit out Hope quite easily and he's got a bunch of good support for it. His staples/backrow are relatively splashable and decent. There are also all the Numbers which gives his deck some variance.. I don't remember if he ever used them though outside of the Hope variants.

If you watched the dub, ryo is zane. the whole incident was just a misunderstanding of ryo trying to tell sho to not be so rash and actually have deck strategies instead of just shoving a bunch of strong cards in a deck assuming it will let him win. but because he has a habit of speaking harshly to everyone, sho, who is a gentle weenie, took it especially bad.
>read enemy cards
evidently since everyone is so utterly surprised at almost every card effect when it gets activated without it being immediately explained to them, kek
and also part of the curriculum is memorizing staple spell, trap and monster cards, so that implies you need to have a lot of that knowledge on tap, so i guess. it's never explicitly elaborated on though.
>what even are other classes though
duel academy also has to teach you normal subjects like math, reading, writing, etc.
judai is shit at all the normal classes + the theoretical dueling classes (which is what cronos teaches) where, yeah, he doesn't know basic shit.
its a whole thing that he doesn't know what 99% of cards do so other characters have to explain to him while it's happening
which is really just to have the characters narrate to the viewer, but still, he barely understands the card game he's playing and the show goes out of its way to point that out. it gets better later though.
if judai at least had good normal subject scores i think you could argue for him being in ra yellow, given that characters with way shittier practicals but way better grades than him are in obelisk blue. taira's actually a great example of that, as someone who literally could not win any of his practical duels but was great at duel theory and had excellent grades in regular subjects.

>edo
yeah. edo's entire deck gimmick when he was introduced was just being judai but actually being good at the game, which was probably to show judai's potential if he put in the effort to study instead of being retarded and slacking off most of the time.
>does his deck comp change between episodes?
yes. his e-heroes and fusions stay the "same" in that he'll always have stuff like flame wingman and etc. in his extra deck, sometimes with new ones you'll see every so often like e-hero blademan
but most of his deck composition shifts from episode to episode. he doesn't run any kind of staple support backline cards which is why it's so jarring when whatever random piece of shit he put in his deck that day just so happened to be what he needed
sometimes its excusable though, when he already knows who he's dueling in advance and what they're probably going to run and on screen is trying to put cards in his deck to counter them. those moments are peak judai and i wish we had more of it.
>alexis

It was good in the anime, when compared to his opponents (Maybe you could say Kaito's was better). In the TCG, Hope was a decent deck. I played it around the time of XYZ's and it was quite an effective pet deck. You could maybe take it to locals and win a small tourney or two. It wasn't a complete gimmick, and for that I would say it's good. Today though, I doubt it could hold up against the modern meta.

yeah, the premise of the five finger chicken they were playing was that you could bow out at any time and could take the amount of money you'd stabbed with you, but you had a good chance of losing a finger, and if you so much as nick yourself, you lose all the money you'd earn
all of the shadow games were tailored to punish the person yugi was playing against and he pretty often, transparently, rigged it in his favor
like having a scorpion inside of a shoe guarding jounouchi's watch on the line that a thief tried to steal, where yugi could easily take the watch without being stung, while the thief was stung and poisoned instantly which in the anime was replaced by a game in some weird liminal space with a pendulum that will crush your hand if you're not fast enough in disarming the watch, where the two competed in seeing who could stop the watch the fastest
kaiba was the only character to lose a shadow game and come back from it an even more evil piece of shit than before, which is why his second penalty was mind crush, as unlike in the DM anime kaiba set up a bunch of jigsaw tier death traps emulating what he perceived the shadow games to be like in KAIBALAND where he intended to murder yugi, all his friends and his grandfather

Just use whatever you want anon-kyun
most of the manga after duelist kingdom is centered squarely on the duel monsters card game. It's not too different from the anime, but it is noticeably edgier in some instances. for example
mai actually gets fucking eaten alive by beetles in her shadow game vs marik, pegasus gets his millenium eye torn out by yami bakura and dies from shock and blood loss, etc.
the orichalchos arc was anime only and effectively filler, but some of it was good
it also featured some of my favorite cards that finally got added to the TCG a few years ago, the legendary dragons
My favorite bit from the duel monsters era aside from DK was probably Yu-Gi-Oh R, which was loosely adapted in the anime, sort of, kind of
so i'd recommend reading that. yugi, his friends and kaiba all get trapped in a virtual world and go on an adventure.
>Didn't he threaten his death?
he literally threatens to kill himself at one point if yugi doesn't let him win and is .05 seconds away from doing it when yugi realizes he's serious and throws the game.

>model kits of Exodia and Blue-Eyes are absurdly expensive
Oh..
But uh, I did not know that there were recycling and filler issues, I just assumed they decided to do something completely different and get the younger audience who didn't want constant threats of death and world-enders looming over each episode.
