Alright, it is Sunday and I am gonna post the twenty-eighth volume of Ranma 1/2. Feel free to react or comment on any panel, though I appreciate if image replies are not used during the dump. Feel free to discuss anything Ranma 1/2 related after the dump.

Previous thread: >>268919158

Despite the OP image, I am using the latest Viz localization which does not feature this cover exactly as it is a 2-in-1 edition. Due to image limits, I will be dumping chapters by original volume. Be aware that some of the larger images have been edited to be lower quality due to image size limits.

In addition, I will be dumping one chapter of the short series MOON, The Great Pet King that released around this time. These are fanscans since the story was only recently collected again for publication. Today, I will be dumping the second chapter of this.
>>
Title is accurate. What a dramatic title. Get excited.

September 8th, 1993. Author's note: "Volume 26 of the manga will be out around January 10th. There is also an OVA, so please look forward to it as well."
>>
>>269064143
I wonder if the Wizard of Oz reference with "Bears, Oh My!" was localizer humor or in the original. Either way, made me laugh. Looking good, Ranma.
>>
>>269064177
Akane supportive. Also, every Ranma face in this is pretty cute.
>>
>>269064206
When I took special note of that ad on the first page, I didn't expect it to come up.
>>
>>269064230
The bear also stopping in surprise is pretty great. Who could this be?
>>
>>269064247
Got that commando look.
>>
>>269064274
Bear today, gone tomorrow.
>>
>>269064302
Be more careful with your bear exhibits or whatever, ma'am.
>>
>>269064354
Wow, an incredibly detailed rendition of Genma on that scroll.
>>
>>269064070
finally, i thought it would never be sunday
>>
>>269064380
Ah, no wonder he is so cool. He's Ranma after all. Also, they seem to have chosen to just translate the name of the attack here. I googled it and it apparently was originally 山千拳 or "yamasenken". Translating each kanji individually gave me Mountain Thousand Fist (you know, Ken, like an attack).
>>
>>269064449
This must be quite a shock for our Ranma.
>>
>>269064302
>tfw never got a spinoff of ryoga's adventures as a mercenary
>>
>>269064471
What a touching reunion.
>>
>>269064503
Heh, "pop". Also, oh no, not Genma!
>>
>>269064521
Also, I guess the "poor house" is a bit of Ranma lore. Though I don't know if it meant like "poorhouse" or like, "our poor little house". Maybe the Japanese is clearer.

And oh well, Genma. At least you're off the hook for now.
>>
>>269064573
Has the decency to think his monologue rather than say it out loud.
>>
>>269064604
End of chapter! Quite a serious situation.
>>
This title conveys what it needs to, but the original was 海千拳と山千拳, ie. Yamasenken vs. Umisenken, as mentioned before Yamasenken is the name for the attack that the commando guy used and Umisenken is the same thing but with Sea replacing Mountain. Yama vs. Umi is a common pair to compare and contrast in Japanese culture.

September 15th, 1993. Author's note: "It's 10 days until the release of the Mermaid OVA and 4 days until the release of the 26th volume...my heart is pounding."
>>
>>269064714
Extra long first panel and we got the face-off. Pretty cool.
>>
>>269064733
Another translated attack name. I don't mind these, but I'll still document the original name when I can find it. Anyway, this one was called 猛虎開門破 which got translated by DeepL as "A tiger opens the door and breaks", which uh, isn't super accurate. But you get the idea. It is pronounced Mouko Kaimon Ha.
>>
>>269064795
Ah, now we're back to using the original untranslated name with dialogue referencing what it translates to. It seems that they just choose whichever is easiest to typeset, if you have some extra dialogue, use it to translate, otherwise just translate it.
>>
>>269064230
>>269064177
世界の熊展. 熊展 isn't it my dictionary but is probably read "kumaten". the whole thing together is world of bears exhibition. whether there's a pun in there or not is beyond me. btw it's actually the rightmost sign on the outside of the building
>>
>>269064842
Hair down Nodoka.
>>
>>269064886
Another attack name. Here's the original: 毒蛇探穴掌, my machine translated it as "“Viper's Pointing Palm” (martial arts), an ancient Chinese martial art form involving snakes and vipers", as in, literally that entire thing. I guess it is an actual term. The romanji is Dokuja Tanketsu Shou.

>>269064862
Oh, interesting! I kind of like it being the smaller sign, but yeah, that makes sense.
>>
>>269064961
Good save.
>>
>>269064978
Would've been a pretty gruesome sight for Ranma 1/2.
>>
>>269064573
貧乏長屋, "poor tenement". poorhouse is actually 救貧院. ranmom does emphasize the poor part in her original dialogue. also in case anyone cares the wall scroll says "seppuku"
>>
>>269065001
Given that Genma thinks the sea scroll might've been thrown away, it shouldn't be that much of a surprise that this guy found the mountain scroll.
>>
>>269064658
oh shit it's not ryoga! i have been tricked by the rumiko sameface
>>
>>269065037
May as well just ask, right?

>>269065028
Yeah, that makes more sense. Also, that's an incredible scroll. Come on, Nodoka, let it go.
>>
>>269065093
Unbeknownst to all, our impostor investigates. (And at least doesn't say his plan aloud).

>>269065073
Yeah, I can see how that could happen. He does have sharper features, wavy hair, darker eyes and no fangs, but the bandana really makes him seem similar.
>>
>>269065153
Ranma's face in panel 4 is wonderful.
>>
>>269065167
Not quite normal.
>>
>>269065280
Cup Noodles. In the middle of a field.
>>
>>269065336
End of chapter! Quite an odd situation you stumbled into.
>>
September 22nd, 1993. Author's note: "I did a new, original drawing for next year's calendar. It was tough, but I was confident. Stay tuned."
>>
>>269065484
Such a bizarre gag, when you think about it. A lot of characters have done this by now, Shampoo, Ryoga, Lime... Just like a weird display of strength, pushing a wall like you would a piece of plastic wrap.
>>
Shampoo should put her tits in my mouth.
>>
>>269065524
Was there no one in the other room? Was he in the wall?
>>
>>269065553
Little cocky.
>>
>>269065567
And now we have a name so I don't have to keep avoiding using it. Admittedly, I never remembered this guy's name anyway. Furinkan says the following about his name: "When read in the Japanese fashion the name "kumonryu" (公紋竜) translates as "dragon of nine markings." This is a type of koi fish which comes from the karasu, or black stock, but often appears to be wearing the black coloration like a garment."

>>269065548
Better keep up with your martial arts training.
>>
>>269065651
Bit of a timesaving technique on the windows there, the people look like they are on a balcony.
>>
>>269065709
I can see how this had to be sealed away.
>>
>>269065746
The misdirect!
>>
>>269065759
金絲緊縛翔, Kinshi Kinbaku Shou and it machine translates to "Golden Thread Bondage Flight".
>>
>>269065807
迎門鉄扇指, Geimon Tessen Shi, machine translated to "Welcome-Gate Iron Finger". Welcome-Gate here apparently refers specifically to temples and shrines.
>>
>>269065862
Sinister skill that ought to have been destroyed. Amounts to yelling at someone before beating the crap out of them. Well, at least so far. Ranma 1/2 does make you accept stuff like this though. It is a weird world.
>>
>>269064961
oh no she's hot
>>
>>269065900
Ranma's day isn't going well.
>>
>>269065931
A sad little moment. Rumiko talked about this arc in a manga extra and I'll post the entire thing later, but you can tell it ended up being a bit more serious and it is moments like this where I think it really works.
>>
>>269065093
nodoka appears to be cooking tempura, judging by the shrimps and panko
>>
>>269065651
kumon is also the name of an international chain of cram schools for elementary students founded in japan in 1958
>>
>>269065973
Our hero.

>>269065981
Oh, and squid. Yummy.
>>
>>269066094
Funny to see Genma just in his non-Panda form lounging.

>>269066091
Oh, we have Kumon schools here too, I didn't realize they started in Japan.
>>
>>269066130
End of chapter! What lies in store with this technique?
>>
Original title was 特訓!! 海千拳 which basically means Special Training!! Umisenken (ie. the attack).

September 29th, 1993. Author's note: "I got the Mermaid OVA and thought it was really great... right?" I guess she wants to hear from people, but it really sounds like she's doubting the quality.
>>
>>269066094
Ranma's smile is worth protecting.
>>
>>269066175
Now is this Ryoga, Ryuunosuke or Koga the Wolf Demon?
>>
>>269066175
I love that it is clearly a repurposed Panda-sign with a useless handle.
>>
>>269066130
rumiko uses a different spelling of kumon (which is a normal surname). here it's 公紋 instead of the more common 公文. ryu's name is something like "dragon public-crest"
>>
>>269066244
Wonderful stance.

>>269066238
Well, Ryoga and Ryunosuke have the same hair (where it kind of meets in the middle of the forehead, which Ranma doesn't have). But Ryoga has light colored eyes. Like his irises are usually grey. While Koga has just white eyes with no pupils and elf ears. Maybe I'm just overdosed on Rumic manga, but all these details really do stand out for me.
>>
>>269066352
Reminds me of Dragonball for obvious reasons.
>>
>>269066420
Mysteries abound.
>>
>>269066352
I put a fucking collage together of a theoretical roster for a Rumiko based fighting game, and you REALLY see how characters like early manga Akane, Kagome, Sakura and Kyoko are the same fucking face, but then people say Kagome and Kikyo look the same?
Also, thanks for storytiming this stuff!
>>
>>269066352
>>269066420
>>269066428
Seeing Genma being entirely serious is a trip.
>>
>>269066428
Oh no! I see he is wearing his little spiral pattern ones rather than his R for Ranma ones. These spirals always reminded me of the Chinese square spirals on ramen bowls, but I don't know what those are called and they are a bit different.

Okay, I found what it is called. It is called "Raimon" (雷紋, translating to ‘thunder crest’) though I don't know if it is the same thing as the spiral on Ranma's boxers. This was kind of a tangent.
>>
>>269066637
Ranma cute.

>>269066568
I know, right?

>>269066520
Oh, I saw that. I love all the obscure picks. You definitely can see her patterns with all the one-shot characters. Kyoko and Sakura actually do have different eyes, but it is pretty hard to see. I think Kyoko's eyes are bigger (or maybe just her irises?).

I will say that if you just do face comparisons (no hair or eye color), you do end up with not a lot of molds for primary protagonists. You're more likely to see differences in art style over the years than character design when comparing stuff like Sakura to say, Kagome.
>>
>>269066760
Oh, if you saw the 1997 promotional short for Inuyasha (where Mousse voiced Inuyasha instead of Boy Ranma), she looks MUCH more like Sakura.
>>
>>269066760
I love that he seems to never take this outfit off. He just chills in it, shoulder straps and all.
>>
>>269066818
Got some hints of tragedy. Also, it does appear that he's planning something nonlethal.

>>269066793
Kagome's hair also meets in the middle, but she has that hair tuft. Sakura also has that hair tuft, I guess, but it is a lot more rounded. She does seem to have an "older" face in Rumiko's art, I think it is something about the exact proportions. All very minor stuff that varies from panel to panel and definitely chapter to chapter over the many years. Honestly, I once overlaid Sango's face on top of Kagome's face and they basically have the same face if you remove their hair. It doesn't take much. Part of Rumiko's "manga-like" philosophy towards character design.
>>
>>269066917
Cute.
>>
>>269066939
What an absurd page.
>>
>>269066952
What do you do with that once you have it?
>>
>>269067042
Nabiki always stay so nonchalent.
>>
>>269066952
This is so fucking good out of context
>>
>>269067042
I couldn't tell on the last page but it seems Nabiki's shirt says "Misdo Club" which is or was, not sure, a fashion line of some sort by the company "Mister Donut". I guess it was popular in Japan. In the US, they got bought out by Dunkin' Donuts and as such all got renamed. And I don't think they ever made clothing items.
>>
>>269067131
I love how the creeper stance is vital to this whole thing. Also, this might be a new Akane pajamas pattern. I didn't like make a spreadsheet for these.

>>269067119
Honestly, why would he choose that specific task even in context?
>>
>>269067171
Man, imagine being the sort of person who looks at this gag and puts it in a box labeled "reasons to dislike Akane". Anyway, favor time.
>>
>>269067192
End of chapter. A little complication for Ryu Kumon.
>>
What a pretty cover.

October 6th, 1993. Author's note: "If Akebono won the championship by the time this book comes out, please give a round of applause."
>>
>>269067230
Right back to it.
>>
>>269067295
God, imagine if that's how Ranma acted.
>>
>>269067309
Straight forward.
>>
>>269067309
I wanna goosh akane
>>
>>269067331
Quite a disparity in their sizes. I do love this gag. I also love the extreme reaction shot of the fifth panel. He looks so lanky there.
>>
>>269067347
A mother always knows. Not really, but it feels like the thing to say.
>>
>>269067371
Took me two reads of this page to notice Soun's newspaper.
>>
>>269067401
Ranma cute.
>>
>>269067416
Wow! What a discovery. Of course, Ranma has mastered it more or less already.
>>
>>269067461
Is it possible?
>>
>>269067478
I wonder if this look was based off a specific movie or show or something.
>>
>>269067511
This is probably not a good idea from a religious standpoint. Anyway, this move is called the 鬼神来襲弾, or Kijin Raishuu Dan. DeepL translated it as "Ghosts' and Gods' attack". I like the alliteration, but it probably isn't as accurate as what VIZ translated it to. For some reason, Furinkan had a note for the original name of this attack but not the other ones this arc.
>>
>>269067577
I love that he worse the backpack, camo pants and bandana since he was a kid.
>>
>>269067627
Don't worry your mother.
>>
>>269067661
Hm, what could the scroll say?
>>
>>269067720
End of chapter! The sword returns!
>>
>>269066637
i think you're thinking of narutomaki, a fishcake with a little red spiral. these however are much closer to an ancient greek pattern
>>
>>269066818
why would you ever take off an outfit that makes you look 11/10 cool?
>>
The original title was 電光石火 海千拳!which appears to translate to Lighting Speed, Umisenken, basically the same thing. I just figured I'd post something.

October 13th, 1993. Author's note: "Ranma OVA reservations are doing well. It's really good, so please watch it."
>>
>>269067416
akane's shimapan and lacy bra
>>
>>269067837
Little does he know that the sword is always there.

>>269067784
Not quite! I understand why the confusion, but I actually meant the square pattern described in this blog post:

https://www.myojousa.com/blog/ramen-tableware/

If you search "raimon" on that page or "raimon pattern" on Google, you should be able to find stuff regarding it.
>>
>>269067511
camo pants + tank top + fingerless gloves combo will never not be cool
>>
>>269067920
She's got all kinds of senses.
>>
>>269067945
An honorable departure.
>>
>>269067964
I like the little sweat drop.
>>
>>269067981
Laughed out loud when I saw the statue.
>>
>>269068006
This really is a more personal battle than most.
>>
>>269068016
Fake Ranma Route. Oh, Ranma.
>>
>>269067920
oh good find, i was thinking in terms of this:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meander_(art)
there's a touch point between classical greece and east asia via gandhara (thanks to alexander). early monumental buddhist art is shaped by classical influences. these in turn heavily influenced subsequent buddhist art as it spread through east asia:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greco-Buddhist_art
it's not impossible that the greek meander eventually ended up on ramen bowls
>>
>>269068059
Back to fights.

>>269068082
Oh, these look remarkably similar.
>>
>>269068293
>>
>>269068318
>>
>>269068339
The creeper pose does look a teeny bit cooler here.
>>
>>269068353
I love how the open-gate attack appears to use a kick in addition to the wide swing. I have no idea how that would work.
>>
>>269065167
>Ranko, dear, after dinner, let's you and me take a nice hot bath together!

I like where this is going...
>>
>>269068369
白蛇吐信掌, Haku Dato Shin Shou. My machine translation said "lit. the white snake spits out its mail palm (idiom); fig. reveal one's true nature"

I think it got confused. I don't know what "mail palm" refers to.
>>
>>269068505
End of chapter. Some sound logic there, honestly.

>>269068492
Seppuku. It goes to entails.
>>
Right back in the action. Kind of an odd face there.

October 20th, 1993. Author's note: "Simon & Garfunkle are coming to Japan for a concert. I really liked them in the old days... does everyone know who they are?" I feel like she mentioned a Simon & Garfunkle concert a few years back in an author's note.

Furinkan's note: "Kazuhiro Fujita who was publishing Ushio & Tora at the time said: If you draw three calendars, Ms. Takahashi will draw seven. That's amazing."
>>
>>269068704
Time for a heart to heart.
>>
>>269068750
鎧戸裂牙断 or Gaito Tesuga Dan. It seems like it has the word slatted shutter in it, like a window which I guess VIZ may have missed. And then "tooth fracture". My machine translation basically said "Slatted Shutter Tooth Fracture", but maybe that was deemed a little too silly sounding. And that's with splitting kanji apart.
>>
>Ryu Koumon arc
Finally here, the arc with the biggest and best stealth joke of all

>>269068750
>another slowish thread
can't believe the akane centric volume killed the vibe of two storytimes now. That arc is a complete buzzkill. Couldn't help you even after trying to rile up new anime cucks, sorry OP but it's going to get really slow from now on it seems
>>
>>269068872
支柱落地勢 or Shichuu Rakuchi Sei. The machine translation gave me "Pillar Floor Advantage". I don't know what VIZ was doing, but again, machine translation is not always accurate. There's a lot of architecture and animal stuff to these names and it seems hard for VIZ or machine translations to keep up.
>>
>>269068975
Soun explaining what I've sort of been trying to say as well. Also, the bottom page features a Henohenomoheji and another doodle face I believe is called the "tsurunihamarumarumushi". These all have long names because it is every character that is used to draw the face.
>>
>>269069076
Yeah, the kick the door part is really funny in combination with the throwing the door open. A bit redundant.
>>
>>269069100
I guess Pillar Floor might be an overly literal translation of "Foundation"? And a collapsing brace would lead to the collapse of a foundation?
>>
>>269069128
An aura of pride. I love the way Soun's hair moves in his reaction shots.
>>
>>269069145
Oh no!
>>
>>269067171
>>269067192
these two are the best couple.
>>
>>269069167
Shampoo schizo has been successfuly EVICTED. Status quo always win, baby!
>>
>>269064658
Ranma COOL
>>
>>269069161
I like the depiction with the sword. I assume this is Ranma's imagination, not Ryu's.
>>
>>269069290
Quite an image in that first panel. Big flames.
>>
>>269065001
This lore here puts Genma at the high tiers of the power levels if he decided to actually use his sealed away martial arts. But he doesn't so he gets bopped fairly easily.
>>
>>269069298
At least he didn't pull out his heart.
>>
>>269067416
>he's going full happosai
>>
>>269069317
懐中宝珠殺 or Kaichuu Houju Satsu. Machine translation gave me what appears to be nonsense, something like Whiting Pearls Kill or "Chinese Pearl Jewels Kill", which admittedly seems to fit the theme more but I am not sure how it relates.

>>269069314
Well, he did also say that Ranma mastered it remarkably quickly but I agree. Power levels in this series are hard to nail down though. Rumiko has been clear that Genma and Soun are pretty powerful, but how could they not be, being disciples of the great Happosai?
>>
>>269067416
Ranma using martial arts training as an excuse to go through Akane's unmentionables lel
>>
>>269066568
>>269066352
Not just serious, but hyper competent. Man is actually a really talented martial artist under his idiocy.
>>
>>269069389
What unique envelopes.
>>
>>269069506
Imagine just knowing when you're child is about to die. I guess a lot of people do believe in that.
>>
>>269069522
End of chapter! Woah!
>>
>>269067171
This is such a strangely intimate moment. I love it.
>>
>>269069167
Correct!
>>
October 27th, 1993. Author's note: "Ranma will hit 300 chapters soon!! I'm thinking of doing something special for the occasion. Stay tuned."
>>
>>269067347
Akane is a real one for this honestly
>>
>>269069580
護身流星布 or Goshin Ryusei Fu. The machine translation said "Bodyguard Meteor Cloth". Oh and hey, a furoshiki. They couldn't translate that.

Furoshiki is apparently just a cloth used for wrapping parcels among other things, but this particular kind has an infamous association I'm sure most of you already know. I'm sure the story will make it obvious, but if not, I'll mention it in a bit.
>>
>>269068353
Ranma COOL. I'm a sucker for the subtler martial arts, even though I know they're probably not practical in real fights. I was a wing chun kid.
>>
>>269069666
鯉魚翻身 or Rigyo Honshin. Machine translation appropriately explained the joke, which is nice: "lit. carp turn over (idiom); fig. to make a clean breakthrough".
>>
>>269068975
He's breakdance fighting!
>>
>>269069693
背山倒海態 or Haizan Toukai Tai. DeepL gave me "Behind the Mountain and the Sea" but I assume VIZ's is more literal.

The manga extra mentioned that this arc had a lot of techniques and boy, were they right.
>>
>>269069314
The series kind of glosses over it at times, but if he was ever fighting for real he would be terrifying.
>>
>>269069128
>>269069145
I guess we have to give Genma credit, he did turn Ranma into the greatest martial artist of his generation (alongside Cologne)
>>
>>269069741
Soun, not willing to watch two young people kill each other fruitlessly, achieving nothing.
>>
>>269069768
"Octopus head". Funny, I assume in Japanese he just said "tako" since that is the usual insult, but I could be wrong.
>>
>>269069228
At last this is the age of Akane
>>
>>269069803
I wonder what young Ryu is doing with that bottle there. I have no idea.
>>
>>269069867
God imagine if he was successful. Dozens of yamasenken users running around Japan doing god knows what with it.
>>
>>269069867
The tragedy is now clear.

The original title 見えない秘拳 seems to be Invisible Secret Fist.

November 3rd, 1993. Author's note: "The other day I saw an actual mermaid mummy. I was intrigued by the strangeness of it." Mermaid mummies are exactly what they sound like, though Japanese mermaids don't share many similarities with our conception of them. There were mummified corpses of supposed "mermaids" found in Japan, which as is typical with corpses like this, appear to be constructed from various animals.

>>269070464
I don't know what's with the bodybuilder pose. I am honestly assuming Rumiko had some fun using her muscle reference. Anyway, this technique was 鬼神群大乱舞 or Kijin-Gun Dai Ranbu, which got translated to "lit. ghosts and gods causing havoc (idiom); fig. a massacre". I guess the first attack was based on this expression rather than the other way around.

End of chapter! 夜叉探海包 or Yasha Tankai Hou. Machine translation gave me "sea bag with a night stick (idiom); fig. a scoundrel who explores the sea by means of a trick". What a weird idiom. I guess a lot of these are based on wordplay that can't really be translated. Ah well.

Another cover as last chapter's final panel. It is redrawn of course, it is kind of fun to flip back and forth between them.

November 10th, 1993. Author's note: "I drew a pinup to commemorate the 300th edition of the next issue Ranma 1/2. It's really beautiful."
>>
>>269070684
Hm?
>>
>>269064206
Poor Ranma. This situation must be its own special flavor of hell for him.

>>269064230
I know that exchange in the first two panels is supposed to be comedic, but it makes Akane look like a selfish psycho to me. Wonder how cavalier she'd be if it was HER life on the line...

>>269064230
Who in their right mind would have an exhibition featuring live bears?!

Also, fun fact; Japan is home to arguably the worst ever bear attack in recorded history; in mid-December of 1915, an ussuri (or "Ezo Brown Bear") slaughtered and ate ten people over the course of six days before it was finally killed by professional bear hunters. It's remembered as the Sankebetsu Brown Bear Attack(s).

>>269064503
Honestly, this guy is actually pretty lucky he IS a manly badass type. It'd really be bad luck for him if Nodoka decided he failed the contract and began ordering him to commit seppuku...

>>269064573
You abandon the woman and don't contact her outside of sporadic letters for a decade, things like this happen, Genma.

That said, it's morbidly hilarious how little of a shit she gives about Genma's supposed death, even if she does have every reason to not care.

>>269065001
This arc is another of the reasons why the post-Nodoka's Intro Ranma 1/2 is often considered "Serious Ranma 1/2". There's certainly plenty of gags, but this story is pretty dark for Ranma 1/2, and it gets darker.

>>269065931
And that would be an understatement.

>>269067461
On reflection, you do have to wonder about that statement, but I'll elaborate when we get in deeper.

>>269068016
When you think about it, Ryu Kumon is really kind of Ranma's ultimate rival - more than Ryoga could ever claim to be. Not only is their grudge match in this arc deeply personal due to Ryu's messing with Ranma's mother, but deep in his heart Ranma knows that Ryu IS the son that Nodoka hoped Ranma would turn out to be, and not the gender-bending sly gluttonous trickster asshole freak he actually turned out as.
>>
>>269070703

>>
>>269070897
Now I feel I can post the manga extra about Ryu Kumon and this arc in general. I'll split it between two posts:

"Q: Did Ryu Kumon come from the idea of a phony Ranma?

Takahashi: With this arc, the idea was to see Ranma facing a bit of adversity. Someone pretending to be Ranma suddenly appears and tries to get close to his mother, and that really bothers him.

Q: The appearance of an imposter is a common theme in hero stories.

Takahashi: Like Komon-sama*...

Q: Kumon hasn’t fallen in any springs, and he doesn’t seem to have any superpowers either.

Takahashi: Right. He’s just someone who became stronger through training. Ryu Kumon is an earnest person. He isn’t goofy. It’s almost like he was the real main character of the story, which is why this is his only appearance. I never planned on using him again.

Q: You had a lot of unique moves with this one. Yama Sen-ken, Umi Sen-ken, Mouko Kaimon…

Takahashi: You know, I actually enjoy thinking up that kind of stuff. Yama Sen-ken’s concept was something resembling burglary, so I just sort of just kept with that theme throughout.

Q: The fight is essentially a burglar vs. a petty thief. The arc ended up pretty long, though."

Furinkan's note: "*Komon-sama refers to a Japanese period-drama about the life of historical figure Mitsukuni Tokugawa, which portrays him wandering the country masquerading as a commoner and fighting injustice. You can read more about the drama on Wikipedia."
>>
>>269070927
The other half of the manga extra regarding Ryu Kumon:

"Takahashi: The story does pull Ranma’s mother into it, so I suppose I wanted to do it properly.

Q: The way she becomes involved is very like a story-driven manga, isn’t it?

Takahashi: It’s more like once I got started, I just got very into it. If there was a bit more humor in the story, I do wish I could have exploited it better, but I don’t remember thinking “This can’t be funny!” or anything.

Q: You have to feel sorry for Ranma’s mom, too. Her son is always close by, yet she always seems to miss him.

Takahashi: ...Really? Even though she’d probably just make her son kill himself?

Q: There’s a shadow of misfortune following Ryu Kumon around, but that’s part of his charm.

Takahashi: Well, he is unlucky."

I love Takahashi's little nonplussed "...really?"

Also, I love the creator being "sealed away" as well here. I will add that as that last page made clear, the fukoshiki is often used as a clear visual indicator of a stereotypical thief in Japan, much like a bag with a $ sign is used in the US.
>>
>>269070966
In case you get confused, since there are multiple bags, yes, this is the bag that Genma was carrying.
>>
>>269070981
There's no way Japan uses "slipping a mickey", right? Admittedly, I wouldn't want Japan to have its own slang term for it either.
>>
>>269071013
And yeah, Lady was what Ryu always called her in his head. Since you know. I also love the comical cartoon hole Ranma made in that roof.
>>
>>269071029

>>
>>269071044
Genma doing The Scream. Though it is a bit spookier with the panda spots.
>>
>>269071063
Wonder what he ended up doing. I know Rumiko's little manga extra spoils that he won't come back, but it does feel a bit obvious going in. He's got his own journey now.
>>
>>269071106
End of chapter! Yup, no real changes to our setup to Nodoka, which I file along with P-chan. Status quo aspects whose resolution we are always teased by.

This was a cool arc, even with the "more serious" subject matter.
>>
Oh no, don't cry.

November 17th, 1993. Author's note: "Thanks to everyone's support, Ranma has been published 300 times. I'm truly grateful." Yup, this is our 300th chapter. Furinkan even has this note: "On the cover, Ranma holds up three fingers to signify reaching the 300th chapter of the series. A color pin-up was also included in this week's issue of Shonen Sunday."

Of course, this is the one time Furinkan doesn't have a photo or scan of the promotional stuff. I have no idea where this "pinup" can be found. Sorry, team!
>>
>>269071224
This is likely not called "The River Styx" in the original Japanese but instead refers to the Sanzu River, a mythological river in Japanese Buddhism that has a similar notion behind it. Things seem pretty okay over there for Happosai.

Ch-booom. I assume this is that sound effect that got associated with Urusei Yatsura "chu-don" that Rumiko Takahashi fully admits she got from Shin Tamura in Dekin Boy.

MOON, The Great Pet King or MOON大ペット王 was released sporadically from 1992 to 1994. It has four chapters and this first one was released on September 3rd, 1992. It was published in Shogaku Sannensei, a general magazine for third grade elementary school students. Yes, Moon is Rumiko's first and only kodomo manga.

Furinkan says "It was uncollected for two decades before finally being compiled alongside the All Star compendium that celebrated the 35th anniversary of Takahashi's career." Pretty crazy.

I feel that Moon is basically what you'd expect from a Rumiko Takahashi kodomo manga. It is entertaining enough, in my opinion. I appreciate the fans who translated these but I'm not gonna give them a shoutout on 4chan because that essentially asking for harassment. But the scans are good and the art is not flipped.

I copy and pasted that from the last thread. Anyway, here's chapter 2! This one was published October 3rd, 1992, in the next issue of the magazine and one month after the first chapter. It is a direct continuation of the last one.

Not going to lie, revese satan trips but... for all the good shit Rumiko comes up with Moon is really shitty, by far the worst work. Lacks of the actual Rumiko DNA every other work has, odd considering one would think her kids are great almost everywhere but in this one.

Well, it really seems like it was just one story and then some extras in the same setup rather than something that was planned to be a full fledged series. Genma really is kind of a less annoying Happosai, when you stop and thick about it. Both are, on paper, extremely skilled and talented martial artists... but they're such *idiots* that they undermine everything they are.

>>269069895
This page and the follow-up really works; it is undeniably tragic that Ryu's dad killed himself... but the fact he killed himself by being *so goddamned stupid* as to practice a spine-crushing grip on his dojo's only support beam makes it blackly hilarious.

>>269070811
What I was building towards in my last post is this: because Genma never actually *trained* Ranma in anything outside of the basic stealth mode and the White Snake Venom Reliable Fist, there's grounds to argue that what we see here isn't the "true" Umisenken, but rather it's Ranma's interpretation of it, and that's why the moves are near-exclusively made up of moves that counter the Yamasenken's move's.

Basically, this isn't the Umisenken, it's a *variant* Umisenken that only exists to counter the Yamasenken. So the only one who knows the *real* Umisenken is Genma Saotome.

>>269070927
And the secret is revealed! And yet... it's strangely fitting that Genma's ultimate contribution to martial arts, the sub-styles of Anything Goes that would classify him as a true master... are based on thievery.

>>269070966
Wait, she's never even seen the real Ranma and Akane interact, how would she tell their behavior was off? ...Outside of it just being sketchy, I mean.

>>269071106
Well, he's just found out he wasted the last decade of his life and he's now forbidden from using the martial arts style he spent that same decade mastering, so what else is he gonna do? Maybe seek out training in a new, more respectable style?

Volume covers and magazine covers allowed Rumiko to have some fun with color after long stretches of not getting to use it. She always went wild with colors, with practically every character. I've kinda put it on pause while waiting for the new anime to see if it change my perspective on stuff. I don't want to start the fic, arrive midway through only to watch the anime and go 'fuck, I got it all wrong' or get flooded with hate for writing the characters wrong.

Hey, totally, understandable, but keep in mind, it's a 2020s remake, and even the 1989 original anime changed quite a fair bit of stuff - I personally find the girls a lot more sympathetic and likeable in it than the original manga, for example.

Same, I lowkey hope the remake goes even further in that direction and give us more Nabiki, Shampoo, Ukyo and even Kodachi material.

True but still, it get kinda discouraging sometime.
>I finally finished the sky-seas saga for Voyages of the Wild Sea Horse,
I know, it was cool. Unrelated but Ener is like my favorite One Piece villain, I'm still mad he was beaten with the bullshit 'rubber is immune to electricity' when rubber should burn from the heat alone anyway. It was lazy, just letting Luffy be able to touch Ener and using the fact Ener is a glass jaw should have been more than enough.
>I'm going to try and update Teen Titans Tokyo and Konosuba 1/2 next/
Cool, I haven't seen Konosuba yet so I haven't really gotten into that fic yet but the Teen Titans one is cool.

Wanted to bring this up; if you want to try and ease yourself into the Yellow Trash universe, perhaps a "taste-tester" could be about some journalists coming to interview Ranma and Nabiki? They *say* they want to inteview the "famous Saotome dojo", but the reality is that they're basically a cross between a Japanese Jerry Springer and those phony paranormal investigators from Urusei Yatsura, so it's karmic *and* funny when the weird shit around the Tendo-Saotome Complex keeps scaring them and/or beating them up.

Glad you liked it so much. Well, while I'm happy to help you with Yellow Trash if you need it, perhaps you'd be interested in giving me a hand with Voyages too? In an upcoming chapter, I'll be introducing alternative/parallel reality versions of the Kamikaze Pirates - what if only Kodachi and Ranma were sent to this world, what if it was Mousse who caused this whole mess, what if Nabiki got the Fafnir mythic zoan instead of the Vampire one, etc. You interested in helping brainstorm alternates?
>>
>>269133825
>perhaps you'd be interested in giving me a hand with Voyages too?
Sure, I'd love too.
>You interested in helping brainstorm alternates?
Okay, random idea but maybe 1 alternate for each girls where they ended up alone with Ranma and each alternate would try to tempt their equivalent to go back to their Nerima way, where they try to get rid of the 'competition'? And it ends with our 'main' group actually influencing the alternate to maybe chill out with that back in their home dimension?
>>
>>269133958
Hm. A possibility, yes. One concept I definitely want to use is the Joketsuzoku Pirates, where Umok's amulet was used by Mousse instead and he accidentally banished Ranma, Shampoo, Kasumi and Cologne to the One Piece world - he was just trying to get Ranma but, well, you know Mousse's eyesight. I know for a fact that Kasumi on this crew has the Fafnir/linnorm zoan, but immediate questions I need answered:
>Should Shampoo also have a mythic zoan, to keep her on level footing with Kasumi?
>Should the Joketsuzoku Pirates be as "female-centric" as the main Kamikaze Pirates? It makes sense Cologne would basically try to recreate her tribe as a pirate crew, doesn't it?
>>
>>269134593
>>Should Shampoo also have a mythic zoan, to keep her on level footing with Kasumi?
Maybe she doesn't have a fruit but has some extra martial from Cologne who went 'Well, Shampoo can't coast on her current skill anymore' after Kasumi's power up up?
>Should the Joketsuzoku Pirates be as "female-centric" as the main Kamikaze Pirates?

That is definitely an option, but what I was thinking was that this alternative Shampoo might have the Mythical Zoan for the Raiju, or "thunder beast" yokai. In short, this turns this Shampoo into a tiger-cow with electric powers... thus homaging Lum and Rei from Urusei Yatsura, with a little poke of the tongue at Shampoo the gozu hanyo from Teen Titans Tokyo, and Shampoo's own status as a cabbit zoan in the "true" Voyages canon.

Rumiko is either, too nice or not in control of the copyright, so the industry is using her status as one of the most mainstream mangaka to remake everything the can. They can also pull the "it's old" excuse for it even, so IY fits with that even more. Only the time period blocks them from a Maison Ikoku one, which should a far better candidate due its premise and concept imo

The fact the target audience means children doesn't mean any work of fiction or entertainment should be poorly done, offensively bad or devoid of borderline braindead as a product. That's the mindset that shows why CN and western's children entertainment is completely dead without chance of recovering in the west after decades of cartoons made for 5 year olds that were made with quality and ended up being enjoyed by any demographic despite their target one.

In the case of Moon, it doesn't excuses it; it's bad and Rumiko was more than capable of something like it even with the "it's merely for kids" mindset to not try that hard. I blame the paneling mostly

Or maybe it ended because the plot finished and world was saved, ever thought of that? It doesn't need to go on forever. People didn't even want Inuyasha to go on forever despite how popular it is, and in every thread you see people seething over it's length.
>>

You're way too petty anon.

Considering you continue this discussion with no point, you clearly do.

I loved it from start to finish and had a good time with it. People are different, you know?

>Only you make a deal of these two
Because I'm not letting a series I love get attacked with some false claims like "Inuyasha is totally getting a remake just because UY and Ranma did!1". Nope, not how it works.
>>
>>269137396
>Or maybe it ended because the plot finished and world was saved, ever thought of that?
It ended quickly because ratings make it so. The premise was easy to stretch as like Naraku. Debatably, more easy to stretch
>>
>>269137465
>because ratings
Anime decisions aren't taken on a whim like you think they are. They were always planning two seasons and fit the entire plot in here, that's why literally everything has been answered

Kirinmaru wasn't a total coward like Naraku from get go and him escaping would go against his battle feisty nature.

Yes; some like good stuff, some like shitty stuff. Others like shit and don't care too much about it, others like shit as well good stuff and aware about it

>>269137499
>Anime decisions aren't taken on a whim like you think they are
That's why it ended at a 2nd season; the first one was anough to get a pass and its second chance but ratings didn't help to go beyond or justify a third or more. The show simply didn't keep audience around enough

It didn't need it, Yashahime is perfect as it is. Everything wrapped up well, third season would be new villains out of nowhere and it doesn't need that. Just like Inuyasha made them but people only ever remember Naraku anyway.

>ratings
So the manga you're oh-so-praising is literally the same then, considering it also ends after Kirinmaru? Or is the manga suddenly attached to the Anime and can't go further than it for some magical reasonings?
>>
>>269137662
>Like me. What I find enjoyable is what I consider good stuff.
That's predisposition to mistakes. Unlike you, I know that what I find enjoyable might not be good objectively.

>It didn't need it, Yashahime is perfect as it is.
Inuyasha didn't need. Yashahime anime needed a lot more than just 2 seasons. 4 seasons would've been great with a good show but that wasn't the case
>>
>>269137773
>objectively

I absolutely disagree with that. Yashahime didn't need more than 2 seasons, and it was a good show that entertained me thoroughly.

>one would assume
This is your problem.

They showed what they wanted to show and that's great.
If it was milked, you would see /a/ crying about it ala Boruto which is going for almost a decade now by asspulling new villains out of nowhere.

There was no lack of direction, it answered everything it needed to. I only confirm that it's good.
>>
>>269138108
>there is no such thing as objective truth when it comes to liking fiction.
No, the problem is leaning only in subjectives when it comes to fiction. It's not only to fiction but with everything, actually. But you get the idea

>so you're targetting the anime specifically then? But I thought you didn't read the manga.
It's because I don't read the manga that I talked about the anime specifically. You have problems reading

It will always be forever more popular than 90% of anime out there, considering it's a Rumiko property, and she is a household name. She is rich enough, Sunrise is rich enough, nobody lost any job or house over it.

Besides I'm not an investor to care what flops and what not. I care what I like. Take your flop talk elsewhere.

>I still see you as someone

You come from a forum? You sound now like one of those fanboy crap. This is not an echo chamber btw, this just is not a safespace for you, there's a difference

>It will always be forever more popular than 90% of anime out there, considering it's a Rumiko property, and she is a household name
>he says this when talking about Yashahime
Hey, Amuro! If it's so popular, how come it only had 2 seasons and ratings dropped along the way?
>>
>>269138607
>how come it only had 2 seasons
Because it didn't require any more? I guess Haruhi is unpopular because it doesn't have 100 seasons. Yashahime had a final boss, and he was defeated. Just the same as it will be in the manga. There doesn't need to be 5 final bosses to make a good story.

>muh ratings
It was in Top 10 of Japan's weekend shows and that's from S2. Your excuse doesn't even work when series with much lesser ratings get S3 onwards simply because they dragged on.

>this is not an echo chamber
Oh it absolutely is. You're only supposed to like and praise what is "le approved" on this board. If you're like me with a taste of your own, you get redirected by reddit, as per your own admission.
>>
>>269138634
>Because it didn't require any more?
You're stuck in a loop. Inuyasha didn't require too much time but it did overstay its welcome, why Yashahime didn't? The only difference is rating. Because if it's the story, that's a big can of worms on its own

>Oh it absolutely is
No, that's what you think. But you're hellbent on making clear your subjective idea is the objective truth
>>
>>269138679
>Why Yashahime didn't
Because it settled with one dedicated final boss, and there was no hints towards someone controlling him from above.

>The only difference is rating
Nope. The difference is the creators intention.

>But you're hellbent on making clear your subjective idea is the objective truth
Talking about yourself much? I'm saying what I like is good, and that's it. I'm not gonna pretend that what I like bad just to fit in here. I won't be calling a show I enjoyed any bad names.
>>
>>269138913
>Because it settled with one dedicated final boss
Inuyasha wasn't too far with Naraku installed early, anon

>I'm saying what I like is good, and that's it. I'm not gonna pretend that what I like bad just to fit in here. I won't be calling a show I enjoyed any bad names.
For a 100th time; what you like doesn't make it any good because of it. The "but it's good to me" it merely coping. And you're the only one fixated in taking it personal.
>>
>>269138679
Inuyasha didn't overstay its welcome in the first place. Part of it's greatness and memorability comes from the fact it was an epic lengthy adventure.

>>269138973
>shipper director
I don't have any beef with this guy. Mr. Sumisawa made a show which I enjoyed, so I like him.

>wasn't too far with Naraku installed early
Naraku had a million of henchmen that took time, but them having nice character is what's excusing him. Kirinmaru didn't have beyond a few wild Yokai.

>what you like doens't make it any good
And for the 100th time that is wrong. What I like makes it good, because it is my personal taste. And Yashahime is one of the few 2020 series which really, really made me happy.
>>
>>269139000
Inuyasha was away too long for dragging on that much after the 130 episodes. It got repeptitive getting Naraku shitting up new minions after his period for the 4th time

>I don't have any beef with this guy. Mr. Sumisawa made a show which I enjoyed, so I like him.
There's the issue...

>And for the 100th time that is wrong. What I like makes it good, because it is my personal taste.
No, it's not wrong; what one may like doesn't make it free of issues and these issues can be the reason why it's/ends up being bad objectively.
>>
>>269139055
>There's the issue
Where? Me liking a director that made something I like? Not even a shipper. I just find this guy's work good.

>being bad objectively
No such thing when it comes to fiction. Take your objective elitism elsewhere.
