The author, a high school teacher, recounts his 12 years on "night patrol" in Yokohama City, where he comes face to face with youth dealing with issues ranging from self-mutilation to drug abuse. Chapter 0: The Swing

>>269099078God bless the secret plan of increasing dailies count until all the trash threads are pushed out.And to top it all off, this is actually a 9.5/10 manga
And that's all for today, I'll usually be posting a bit earlier. And this chapter was unusually long. I'd say ~40 pages is a good average. The introduction may have been a little bleak, but it's good to see where sensei came from. Not every story is going to have a happy ending, but there's hope to be found in many others. Hopefully you'll find them interesting.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FU2frZXgWOg&list=PLUcudphXIHokmvsVZuwEWp53m0tAqMgNk&index=10If you've read this manga before, I just finished going through Ikigami. You may like some of the stories in there as well.https://www.mangaupdates.com/series/jwa04yh/ikigami
>>269101330Oops, sorry. I thought you were done dumping when I posted Gamo. Thanks.
>>269101439No worries, cute Gamo.
Thanks for dumping OP. I read Ikigami and I'll be following this.>>269101220That's not what the doctor is saying. He's saying that just as you can't heal a fever by saying you'll be there for the sick child, neither can you heal a drug addiction. Drug addictions are chronic illnesses. Willpower doesn't cure cancer; willpower also doesn't cure drug addictions. There's ample evidence that treating drug addiction like a willpower problem just makes people feel guilty and powerless and keeps them from seeking help. This includes words like "dirty" or "clean". Treating it like a cancer, where "using again" isn't a failure of willpower but something like a cancer coming back, has been shown to drastically improve outcomes, because when people use again, they don't blame themselves. They go, "My illness is back so I need to see a doctor," just as they would if their cancer came back, so they get help early. The doctor said it in a dickish way, but anyone who seriously wants to help "fight a war on drugs" has to treat it like a medical condition and not a personal failing.pic unrelated
>>269101330I've got so many feelings about this manga. thanks for posting.

>>269101467Yes Gamo is so cute. I want her to bully me. And then Yomawari sensei can come in and save me but I'll say "fuck off I love it when she bullies me" and then Gamo will blush and Yomawari sensei will smile wryly and turn and walk away in the sunset with the wind blowing some leaves up and billowing his jacket up and down
>>269100967Re-read it. It's the first chapter, a prequel of sorts. He tried to help the kid, but the kid had issues with the yakuza, so he started dealing, stole some cash. I guess Mizutani would've been fine with having the yakuza arrested and apologizing for the stolen cash, but he couldn't deal with a relapsing junkie. But worse, he betrayed Mizutani's trust when he admitted to selling drugs. The chapter is about Mizutani learning an important lesson. Always be guarded against a junkie, just don't entirely close your heart to them.
Btw, for anyone who found Volume 9 ending (Mangadex) kind of abrupt, that's the actual ending of the original run apparently. I didn't understand what was on Mangaupdates. The new chapters are side stories (vol 10 and 11) and were published under a subtitle.
>>269099971Man don't we all wish that sometimes there's someone who'll simply tell us that
I want to say I came across this a few years ago and wasn't overly impressed. I find School Back (if you want to say there's a similarish genre) to be a little better and a little more real in its tone and feeling.
>>269104332This is based on a real dude though
What a piece of moral standing shit>THEY FORCED YOU TO TAKE AND SELL DRUGS BY BEATING YOU? IT'S YOUR FAULT AIIIEEEEEEEStupid jap fucker should be arrested for killibg the kid DROPPED
Well that was kinda awkward and rushed.
>>269099498>>269099521These kids brought to you by Stepehn King's Bully Factory
>>269101795Now that you mentioned it, I never understood the "willpower can overcome addiction" notion. Addictive drugs hijacks your drive so people with high willpower just end up channeling that higher willpower into getting drugs anyway.

>>269104048He already knew he was a junkie using drugs though. Why would learning he wanted to go to a clinic make him change his mind?
>>269104580A real dude writing about himself.
>>269106555>>269100967>>269104048I always understood it as his ego is bruised that he didn't "cure" his addiction by himself because he wanted to feel like a savior. Having the kid go to a rehab center means he wasn't enough, so he's frustrated.

>>269110215Sure it might actually work, but it doesn't make for a riveting set-piece though
>>269106500It definitely can, there are people that succeed in quitting heroin or meth cold turkey, but those people are exceptional, and it isn't always because they're the strongest willed human alive, but because they're just genetically predisposed to getting off of it better than the rest of us. And sometimes it is because they just have a great will. But there are plenty of others that just can't do so without relapsing over and over again.
>>269101330Thanks OPI'm curious how realistic they're going to be with this one. At least in Japan this type of Savior Teacher role can actually work. Try it in Compton and Teach would get robbed while on one of his night walks.

>>269129023Because they're not taught to do it. They're taught willpower, that weakness is worthlessness, that you should solve all your problems on your own, that being a "burden" is bad, etc. etc. Which causes all the problems in the first place.A functioning society is antithetical to society as it is. Inequality is baked into the system because exploitation generates wealth. It's always better to ask for help, receive it, get better, and then return the favor when someone else needs help. But that would allow society to function, which isn't in the best interest of those who are in a position to give help.
>>269100010sadly, the brain damage is already done
>>269124497but who watches him?
>>269125797superhero ojii-san
>>269134221hehe
>>269133193>A functioning society is antithetical to society as it is.I would say there are two types of society: low-trust and high-trust.Low-trust allows individuals to see society as a resource to use until it stops being useful.High-trust allows society to be a net gain for every member. The problem is using the techniques for the wrong type of trust, crippling the latter's long-term viability.Low-trust technique in high-trust society = everyone else is worse off.High-trust technique (e.g., begging for help) in low-trust society = you're worse off
>>269128852It's very time inefficient but realistically you probably can't teach a damaged child the nuances. Let's say I'm bullied at work. I know who I can speak with at management. If that can't be resolved I can speak with union or the ombudsman. If nothing can be done I'll probably arrange sick leave and use up my accrued ones and seek new employment. Or I can just have a holiday and chat with family, friends, a therapist. I might speak with my bank and rearrange my financial goals and probably use the time to get a health check up before finding work again. How does one teach that to a child?
>>269116971call me onions or whatever but i couldn't get through this shit. bad shit happening to adults whatever, but kids going through the same thing fucks with me. i would still call it well written though.
>>269125884same feelings. i suspect they tried to spice things up to make it more cool, but the result, well, let's say i had more laughs than tears, and i doubt that was the authors' intent.
>>269125883>QMore or less...
first time catching the first chapter of something dont know if i will be continuing reading. it reminds me of the show the cleaner that used to come on a&e.

Yomawari!
>>269136055You're right. There are simply too many details to consider in each interaction for a child to grasp even though a lot of it can be quite intuitive to adults.
>>269136751It's weird how that works out. At least we're getting something out of it.
