Chapter 10 time.
So here's something that only feels relevant to bring up at this point...In practically every other series of this type of genre, this kind of physical transformation would be some kind of demonic possession or monster transformation, similar to how the chef from the previous case made himself into a beefcake monster through injecting himself with all the drugs. This is not the case at all in Nougami Neuro. This guy isn't some bird monster or possessed by a bird demon or whatever. He's still pretty much a normal human being. Nobody even questions this visual change.Just something that isn't really pointed out much.
Just curious, is anyone here reading for the first time? Feels like most of the comments are from people already familiar with the material.
They chose... poorly.
>>269160019I'd never even heard of it before, but then again I'm still fairly new

>>269169180I'm the translator of the version that was used for volume 2 in these threads, and I have rough TLs up through volume 5. Currently working on typesetting volume 3, but I have some other obligations stopping me from working too fast for now. There's no way my translations are gonna be able to keep up with these threads, but it's neat to see some discussions of Neuro one way or another.
>>269169425If you can give some input on anything that the next translation posts get wrong or isn't really well-worded, please post!
>>269169545Oh, good idea, I'll try to do that. AFAIK most of the egregiously bad translations were in volume 1, but I'll try to keep an eye out for anything that seems off.Conversely, if there's any wording you find confusing, feel free to point it out and I'll try to chime in.
>>269154903>mfw I started following these storytime threads and only just realized it's the AssClass artist
>>269167393>Daily Dose News
>>269169813He drew Elusive Samurai too. Neuro looks nothing like his other two long-form works visually, but you can see the resemblance in other ways once you look closer.
>>269159899I mean Ace Attorney does it too with criminals going into some crazy new form when exposed kek
>>269170150AssClass still contains remnants of Neuro's noodle arms. The way he draws their eyes and tsukkomi reactions are also identical
I love how simple-minded Neuro is. He solves his mysteries by finding the method first then working through process of elimination to find the one suspect who could have done it because that's all he knows. He's seen every trick a demon could pull and has every tool in the box to investigate a place but doesn't care at all about humans or their motives. The president's murder was a pretty easy case from a motive perspective. The two people who benefited from the president's death were Washio and Godai, and once Godai revealed his tsundere side he was cleared of suspicion, plus Washio was presumably already VP so he was next in line for the seat. Same thing with Aya's murders. As soon as she revealed her need for inner loneliness to Yako she had a motive for murdering her friends. But Neuro never catches on which is why he's unable to solve Aya's case until Yako deduces she's the murderer first. And both times, key information is revealed to Yako but not Neuro. He doesn't just need her to be his mouthpiece, he needs her to be a human perspective that guides his demonic powers.
>>269170564True, his bug-eyed tsukkomi faces are one thing that's never changed to this day.>>269170946Yako didn't figure it out first. She asked Neuro if he already knew who the killer was before she started speculating, and he confirmed he did know. >>269165462But it is cool that she figures it out at all, which is why he's impressed.
>>269170946But otherwise agreed, it's hilarious how little he cares about anything but solving the puzzle in front of him and getting his treat. And how he's incentivized to just let murders happen even when he knows about them ahead of time and could theoretically try to stop them. It's kind of the antithesis to the classic Detective Conan "murders just won't stop happening around me" style of development.
>>269171193I think he was lying to save face, but I suppose it doesn't matter. He's still impressed that Yako solved the mystery in her own way, without supernatural intelligence or abilities.
This was one of my favorite mangos even if the tone shift near the end completely killed it. Still, the ending standoff with Sicks and the reveal for why he torments Yako so (spoilers: it's fun) was fucking great.Shame about the anime.
>>269171638The difference between Neuro and Yako is, most likely, that Neuro didn't try to think why she killed them. To him, all that he needs to do is prove that she killed those people, in a way where she's unable to claim otherwise.Yako's research found a link between the deaths and her greatest success, which she only realized was possible when she understood that Aya's twisted psychology depended on her being alone in darkness to reach that success. Which she only could because in this series, demons barely have something that can be seen as empathy - Neuro only gives more of a crap about Yako in general because he needs to use her. Every dangerous thing he does or exposes her to is stuff that he is absolutely sure he can ensure she lives through, which is why the only times he's shown anything more deeper is when this isn't certain. And even then, of course, that's more about his own amazing powers than it is about him really caring for others. But yeah, Neuro can figure out every which way humans can kill each other, but he doesn't care about why humans would kill each other as much.

Any other manga with humor like Neuro? Dorohedoro is close.
>>269175500There's Yondemasu yo, Azazel-san. It even involves a supernatural detective agency, but there's only a little more than 2 volumes worth done before it got dropped.
>>269175648The anime doesn't cover all the way but is still pretty good. Plenty more toilet humor than Neuro but still the same kind of sarcastic humor
>>269175648There's even a tag on pixiv for crossover stuff between this and Neuro, so there must be a bit of fanbase overlap.I haven't read Azazel myself though. Is it translated at least?
>>269175158Other?

>>269175934According to MD there are 23 chapters translated out of 162. It's one of those series that I keep hoping will get picked back up one day
>>269176172That would bankrupt me
I don't mean to alarm any of you but Yako must take MASSIVE shits.
>>269176284Ah, that's a shame. I'll probably read what there is, at least.
>>269175500Yakiatate!! Japan is decently close from what I can recall. It doesn't get as nearly as dark as Neuro but if you're looking for an oddball Shonen parody it works.
>>269177100Yako is a black hole. The only thing that's getting out are radiations and gravity waves
>>269171193Yako is useful but there's only two or three times Neuro REALLY needed her like with the password on the ship.
I remember liking the reverse power creep in the series where Neuro actually becomes weaker and more careful in using his powers over time.Made it feel fresh despite the partial creep into a battle shonen.
>>269177254Yakitate went from actually good to stupid for the sake of stupid and degraded the Jounouchi/Sanosuke sidekick character into a pathetic joke who even the nice shonen MC loses hope in
>>269175031Realistically why would Aya break out to do crime again. Yako is her only friend and she should know killing her is impossible with Neuro there.
>>269177760That spread isn't meant to be taken as future canon events, it's a parody of bad sequels essentially.
>>269177476It does suck how they just turn him into a gag character when he had some good moments earlier on in the manga. I can accept things gets increasingly ridiculous for the sake of humor, but not if you have to sacrifice characterization for it.
>>269177884I just pretend post-Monaco didn't happen. They went out of their way to ruin every character that I don't even want to read anything from that author again>reactions become retarded permanent transformations like Tsukino becoming bald, 2 older antagonists becoming a panda and sexdoll, somebody turning into a fucking dam>Kawachi turning into a pathetic joke nobody takes seriously, even the MC bets on him making awful bread for one of their recipes>bread ayylmao final boss
This series has really, really good panelling
>>269179129it had to make up for the art somehow, early Neuro is ROUGH
>>269179749Everyone says this but I adore the early art and all its jank perspectives and wonky proportions. In my first read through, I was honestly a little sad when the art improved midway through.
>>269159899It's because the real monster is man ;^)
>>269161332Damn, he solved the mystery
>>269179960I don't mind it much but my point was that some editor had to give it the go-ahead so Matsui needed to have something going for it if not the art.
>>269179749Some of the limbs look bad, but otherwise I really like the style. Something about it reminds me of Super Paper Mario
>>269179749It is, but then he pulls out some wild looking horror panel. It's a really fun contrast.
>>269161332There are cases in China where resturants used opium poppies in the food to get customers addicted to their food.
it was a weird choice to make a shonen MC a girl and then not sexualize her at alldoubly so when 90% of her onscreen experience is effectively bdsma less inspired authour would have made Yako a titty monster and those things would pop out every time she gets tied up and abused
>>269182866>then not sexualize her at all[doubt]
>>269182866yako doesnt make matsui's peepee hard, he just thought the weird imagery looks coolnagisa and tokiyuki have shown us what he really likes
>>269174969It's well-known that Yako's appetite means you need a CEO's salary to feed her on even one date
>>269166011It's great. You can see the real series start to form compared to the crude first arcs, Aya is the first proper opponent and this is the first case that actually has a true buddy cop dynamic between Yako and Neuro. I remember when I first read this this was the arc that went from passing interest to I'm going to follow this.
>>269167242Cool sequence and very cool page
>>269167335Huh, so Neuro didn't seem to actually eat any mystery from Aya
>>269183045post this canon sexualized Yako that you imply exists
>>269183743His slave's growth was his consolation prize in this scenario.
>>269177466Same here. It's crazy to think that Chapter 1 Neuro could've easily solo'd the final boss, but in the end he had to rely on humans he used to look down on.After this and AssClass' ending I'm really looking forward to what Elusive's ending will look like.
>>269179960Neuro is the kind of series that benefits from the bizarre perspectives, intentional or not.
