Now consider that if they had failed, the reward would have been increased. Goblin Slayer grabs as many goblin quests as they will let him do, and he'll do them all solo, so for that job, instead of making 10 silver, he makes 40, and for a job where some rookies have already failed, he'd get even more. Do five of them in a row like the actual madman he is, and it adds up pretty quickly. Even with a 50/50 split with Priestess, he's still going to be making bank because with Priestess he can do a bunch of the quests much more efficiently.

Goblins just kind of spawned in rooms or corridors on the first floor like any other monster in the place, and didn't really retreat. If anything, the shaman's a survivor of the demon lord's army from 10 years ago. His resentment of Sword Maiden in particular is just because he had a good thing going, and she ruined it by killing the demon lord.
