Kyoani. They're famous for that. Working overtime is against their studio policy IIRC.

Didn't a Toei animator die from overwork? Or was Madhouse.

Toei has never had an animator die from overwork. Toei is the only studio in Japan that has a labor union.

I've heard KyoAni's conditions are pretty good as long as the fire exits aren't blocked. Their aversion to overtime is probably why they don't put out a lot.

CoMix Wave. They literally pay full rent to hundreds of animators to live close to their studio.
>Over 1000 animators worked on "Suzume."
>Among them, at least 100 played a more central role in animation production.
>All of them are given full subsidized rent to live within a 2 kilometers radius around our Tokyo studio.
>One of my biggest concerns is improving the quality of life of animators in the industry. Offering the best pay is part of that.
>We aim to create a "good vibes" environment for animators to thrive.
>We receive emails from people all over the world asking us to hire them.
>But we have to refuse them if they don't speak Japanese.
>If you want to participate in the production of Makoto Shinkai's work, you need to at least speak Japanese.

Why did you repost the same image 50 times? And there are lots of studios not listed.

Their working conditions are good in the sense of being a well-organised company (something most studios fail at) and having good employee benefits, especially for those with families.

However, it's still an animation studio at the end of the day so work is very demanding and it's not all that great compared to a proper white collar job environment. Also, the company severely restricts the social media presence and activities of its employees, so the bosses are shrewd at protecting the company's reputation. Kyoani isn't the best in terms of remuneration either.

Weren't MAPPA infamous for paying the bare minimum just a few years ago? Did they finally get their asses into gear after the clusterfuck of Chainsan Man/JJK S2?

Yeah. Kyoani's scheduling is amazing. The art in their shows is really consistent because of how few key animators they use. That's one of the reasons why their work has such a premium feel. I just dug up this pic from the archive which shows it.

That's a fair point. They're not perfect.

The IDOLM@STER Cinderella Girls Artist Jet Kuma Leaves Cygames, Praises Company's Working Conditions
https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/interest/2021-01-21/the-idolm@ster-cinderella-girls-artist-jet-kuma-leaves-cygames-praises-company-working-conditions/.168611

The Idolm@ster Cinderella Girls Theater manga artist and anime character designer Jet Kuma announced on Wednesday that he has left Cygames after being a full-time employee at the company for 9 years. He said that the reason he left was because the company has grown over tenfold since when he first joined, and that he feels that his inclinations have evolved in a different direction from the company's. However, he also said that he greatly enjoyed working at Cygames, and that he appreciated the positive working conditions.

"Sometimes, the users would make out that we're chained to our desks as we work, but if anything, it's the opposite," he wrote. "We would get told, 'Don't work so much! I'm begging you to go home!' It's fun to work at a job where you get yelled at for exerting yourself."

He also said that it was very fun to occupy his thoughts with idols and games all day, every day. He described Cygames as a company that has "straightened itself out and achieved proper work-life balance," although he also remarked that in the old days there were times when he would stay up all night chatting with the contents director about idols.

The post also detailed the specific tasks Jet Kuma handled while he was at the company, and he assured fans that his existing work has been properly passed on to others, so they won't feel his absence in Cygames' output going forward.

MAPPA's New Studio Annex Will "Improve the Workplace Environment"
https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/interest/2021-07-06/mappa-new-studio-annex-will-improve-the-workplace-environment/.174836

Photos of MAPPA's new "Studio Annex" building were publicly released on architecture media site Architecture Photo on Monday. According to the architects, the desk materials and the open space of the lounge were designed with "the intention to improve the workplace environment."

"The lack of skilled animators has been worsening lately," the notes explain. "One of the various causes is because skilled people in the anime and games industries have instead been going to China, which is in a good economic position. In order to secure the skilled talent, the workplace environment has to improve. To that end, we focused on using wood with warmth for the desks, and creating an open-space lounge where people can refresh themselves. In the future, we are thinking of gathering all the annex studios for this production company into one big site along the Chuo line. We will create an 'animators village' brimming with nature, and establish it alongside a shop and café that fans can also visit."

The building was designed by Key Operation Inc. (KOP) and its CEO Akira Koyama.

Ryū Nakayama, who is directing the Chainsaw Man anime at MAPPA, tweeted: "We are making Chainsaw Man here! It's close to the station and convenience stores, and its interior is nice as well. If you're a young and motivated digital animator, I encourage you to work with us if you've got the interest! Depending on whether we're able to prepare things for them, I'm thinking of proactively reaching out to students, newcomers, and people without experience yet in the future. So if you're interested, by all means reach out."

Former MAPPA Animator Describes Working Conditions as Like a 'Factory'
https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/interest/2021-05-18/former-mappa-animator-describes-working-conditions-as-like-a-factory/.172930

Freelance animator Mushiyo explained why they chose to leave studio MAPPA in a series of tweets on May 14. According to Mushiyo, who worked on the most recent season of Attack on Titan, the studio engaged in unhealthy work conditions during the series' run. (Note: while the tweets were initially public, Mushiyo has since locked their account).

Mushiyo questioned their decision to work for the company, describing their experience of being asked to fix drawings over and over and over again until the sun came up as why they quit. They criticized MAPPA's decision to work on four shows at the same time instead of properly training its team so that such corrections wouldn't be necessary. Mushiyo compared the work environment to a "factory" where bottom rung animators are tasked with correcting issues instead of drawing.

According to Mushiyo, their complaint wasn't unique. "As far as I can tell, about 80% of the employees had similar complaints at the time."

Sunrise Moves to New Head Office Named After Gundam's White Base
https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/interest/2021-10-19/sunrise-moves-to-new-head-office-named-after-gundam-white-base/.178599

Animation studio Sunrise announced on its website on Monday that it has relocated to a new head office in Tokyo's Suginami Ward. The office's name is "White Base," a reference to the iconic spaceship in the Mobile Suit Gundam anime. Sunrise hopes to "bring together each and every person's strong feelings and deliver them to everyone in the world, just like the White Base in Mobile Suit Gundam."

The new office gathers four affiliated companies under the same building: Sunrise, Bandai Namco Pictures, Sunrise Beyond, and Sunrise Music. Sunrise claims that this will facilitate easier and safer communication between the four companies, which were previously scattered across over 20 separate departments. Sunrise has unveiled images of the building's production area, the business operations area, and the conference room.
