why do they write such long titles?
>The Fortunes and Misfortunes of the Famous Moll Flanders Who was born in Newgate, and during a life of continu’d Variety for Threescore Years, besides her Childhood, was Twelve Years a Whore, five times a Wife (whereof once to her brother) Twelve Years a Thief, Eight Years a Transported Felon in Virginia, at last grew Rich, liv’d Honest and died a Penitent >Daniel Defoe
>>269212930There's so much LN garbage to choose from people aren't going to check out the blurb on non descript titles
>>269212930feels like these long titles exist just to justify gags like these
>>269213074>Published 1722So they've regressed?
>>269212930Tao had red hair? Looks like the anime was a masive improvement
>>269213111No, they're catching up w/ old fads. They were medieval in the 1800s.
>>269213074for me it's Little Wars: a game for boys from twelve years of age to one hundred and fifty and for that more intelligent sort of girl who likes boys' games and books

With An Account how he was at last as strangely deliver'd by Pyrates. It's all the same purpose, to act as a plot summary rather than a title. Just the way things trend.
>>269213074for me, it's>The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton Under the Direction of the Marquis de Sade
>>269212930You have to stand out in the sea of other releases. And one way is to grab people's attention with a short summary on the cover or on the side. And with kanji you even get some key points quickly as well. Like in this case reincarnated, 7th prince and magic.Similarly many household items come in different colours in Japan so that they take more store space.
>>269213182>Marquis de SadeAnime when?
>>269212930Imagine you're an author. You want people to try your book, but you're competing with a gorillioon other books in the WN site. And the attention span of the modern "reader"? Destroyer by tiktok brainrot.
titles should be sovlfvl like in the west>start with "The">1 or 2 words>captures the feeling of the whole movie in a single word
>>269213227The Game
>>269212930SEO + trying to bait people casually scrolling through Shousetsuka ni Narou into reading it
>>269213074Sounds like a great otome game in five acts.
>>269213227>TheIt's Za you tourist.
Can't wait for this trend to die but it'll take way too long>>269213215God forbid you rely on a catchy title and positive reviews to get people to read your shit
>>269213101based virgin
>>269212930so you actually know what the story's about
>>269212930
>>269213366What reviews? This is about people going through the book section of a bookstore to find a book. There are no reviews. And if you don't grab anyone's attention, no one's gonna write a review online either. You could make a point for webnovels, but it's basically the same shit with titles in links. At this point it has also become pretty normalised, so it's probably the default choice for many.
>>269213394Fans make their own short title anyway. No one looks at ads or posters. No need to hold back.
>>269213432Interns write reviews.
Because there's so many isekais that they've already run out of one-to-three-word titles.
Because it's primarily a commercial product, not art. It exists in the context a hyper-competitive business environment, where customers aren't ashamed of selecting their slop purely based on tropes.
>>269212930They are being obnoxiously worded on purpose just to grab your attention, light novels are basically pulp fiction from Japan, mass produced, almost 0 quality control especially with fantasy genre as it is. As long as it sells.
>>269212930it's literally just click bait in the form of a novel cover
>>269213435>Fans make their own short title anywayat least for original manga doesn't the publisher push one? never paid attention to if it's reactionary or they decide it up-front
>>269213456It is art. There's always a patron or an audience ultimately paying. Just factory art.
>>269212930You see this in Western internet-published genre fiction too, it's just instead ofI Was Reincarnated as the 7th Prince so I can Take My Time Perfecting My Magical Abilityit'sPrincely Magic [Isekai, Reincarnation, Fantasy]to achieve a similar effect, aka tell the reader exactly what the story's about in less than 5 seconds.
>>269213484Most people don't click anymore. They fingerpaint.
>>269212930It's because these series start out as web novels on Shousetsuka ni Narou, where having a summary in the title means people will get what the series is about as they scroll past it instead of having to click on it to find the summary. Makes it much easier to attract interested readers.
>>269213518Fingerpainting isekai when?
Isekai-shit is for the mentally retarded. That is all.
>>269213517They could do it even faster if they just mangled the name of the main thing they ripped off.
>>269213550
>>269213074defoe's titles are great>The Life and Strange Surprizing Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, of York, Mariner: Who lived Eight and Twenty Years, all alone in an un-inhabited Island on the Coast of America, near the Mouth of the Great River of Oroonoque; Having been cast on Shore by Shipwreck, wherein all the Men perished but himself. >>269213614Worked fine for Romeo Must Die.
>>269213456It's not primarily a commercial product at all. These long title series are all Narou-kei (shit originating from the same community in an amateur web novel site. There's a list of works on this sitehttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sh%C5%8Dsetsuka_ni_Nar%C5%8DThat community started off writing a ton of fanfic for Familiar of Zero where they would change the MC who was summoned in into other characters (from other IPs) or into their own MCs. Eventually fanfic got banned from the site and they shifted to creating OC inspired by said fanfics. There's an absurd number of web novels written in that community that reference each other's work and all do variations of the same thing. A lot of these series that were later adapted into light novels, then manga and anime never started off with the intention of becoming a commercial product. They were just circle jerk slop for other amateur novelists in that community to read. So the titles transformed into summaries to make it easier for works to be identifiable in that ocean of slop.
>>269212930They don't look as long in Japanese because each word is 1 or 2 letters.
>>269213614>War of the Worlds Where The Aliens Wanna Fuck Mepicked up
>>269213614>Romeo & Juliet But Human & Elf․Dunsany snatched that one with his future sight.
>>269213721転生したら第七王子だったので、気ままに魔術を極めます is still long and obviously perceived length is relative to how long an average sentence is in the language in question
>>269213721Other titles are also shorter, so narouslop still stands out
>>269212930So I can judge the book by its cover

>>269213777Imagine if we wrote each word into a little box so that long words look like scribbles and short ones look normal but vertical.
>>269213820more like each syllablewhich basically results in korean...
>>269213215For me it is the opposite, all these long ass titles look the same so I don't even botherBut let's take "Naruto" for example. It's just name with no indication what the story is, and yet I can easily recognize it. Thus if someone else talks about "Naruto" I will go "Ah, that one. I guess it is kinda popular, maybe I will look into it"
>>269213838>I Was Born Into A Ninja Village, But Everyone Shuns Me? Becoming Hokage With My Secret Strongest Sealed Technique!
>>269213838a little bit of clear meaning can also make someone curious. for example, isekai shikkaku, despite being isekai trash, made me mildly curious about "disqualification", while a longer title like "that time i tried to have a lover's suicide but got transported to another world and no matter how hard i tried to die i couldn't" immediately solves the mystery and confirms that it's not worth taking a look at.
>>269213074>a Wife (whereof once to her brother)Picked up.
>>269212930It’s an overabundant market and it’s hard for light novels (which these manga are adapted from) to stick out in the crowd, and most people don’t even read descriptions or synopsises any more, just the title.People are saying it’s tiktik brain rot, but it’s been like this for ten-fifteem years already.
>>2692139922013 could still get away with a WN called "Legend".
