S1 was an utter flop: the BDs failed to rank, the manga got NO sales boost at all and in fact the manga sales went into a freefall that it never declined from, and the streaming figures were also not good. Announcing it in 2024 for what will be at the earliest a 2025 airing is very strange and arguably bad timing. It's either a case of Kodansha nepotism once again, or they're getting desperate and running out of material to make anime for.

I think the real question isn't necessarily why Cuckoo is getting an S2, but why it's getting one NOW. When it was airing everyone expected it to get an S2 immediately after but it didn't happen, leading people (myself included) to think they canned whatever plans they had. For them to decide NOW to make a new season, when the manga is at the nadir of sales/interest/reception, is one of the most baffling decisions Kodansha/WSM has ever done, perhaps even moreso than Kanokari still getting new seasons despite even the Japanese giving up on it.
