Would Mari be as hated if she was part of the original NGE cast?

It would depend on what her role in the original was. Most of the hate for her comes from the fact that she isn't really much of a character and was just shoehorned in to sell merchandise. In 2.0, she's just there to fill Asuka's role so that for the sake of the story the Third Impact can happen earlier. In 3.0, she is mostly inconsequential and forgettable. In 3.0 + 1.0, she has more of role in the story, but you get any answers about who she is, and at the end, she just swoops in and declares Shinji to be her boyfriend. None of this really adds anything positive to Evangelion. It's neural at best, and disappointing at worst. If her role in the story was better, there wouldn't be much as hate for her, and if she was a planned part of the original NGE cast from the begging, then presumably her part of the story would be better thought out.

Inconceivable scenario because Mari's character lacks the soul of Evangelion
