It's Daicon III/IV's 41st and 43rd anniversary today! (kinda)Did you know there is no single complete list of every reference in Daicon IV on the internet?I thought compiling a list of all the references present in both, no matter how obscure they are, could a fun thread idea and something a little different. /a/ is the only place on the internet with enough concentrated autism and enough knowledge about japanese children's entertainment from 50 years ago to be up to this challenge.So I spent around 6 hours going frame-by-frame through the openings and marking every reference I could make out with a number. All in all I counted 15 references in Daicon III and 432 references in Daicon IV I couldn't name myself. I mostly took care of the very obvious stuff, but left things in whereI wasn't sure about the specifics, like a specific model of a speceship for example.At some point the references became so dense that I started only putting numbers, due to sheer space issues.The idea of the thread is that I'll post screenshots from the openings, with the references marked with red numbers. If you think you can identify one of the references, reply to the post with the number of the thing you're identifying and an image of your answer as "proof".Genral discussion of the Openings, DAICON FILMS' history and further projects, as well as the things they're referencing is also permitted.

All in all Daicon III came out to 31 images, while Daicon IV came out to 139. Combined that's 170 images that I would post myself.The image limit on /a/ is 300 per thread afaik, the bump limit is at 500, so I'd expect this to to take 2-3 threads. We have clearer images of some the references, through scans of cels, settei and genga, that can be found on the daicon archives tumblr

It's one of Anno's cuts, and a key thing to note, other than the vacuum effect of the smoke is the debris flying across the screen. Not just rubble and smoke like what was typical at the time, but things like desks and paper are included as well. This was part of a radical shift in animation that was taking place in shows like Macross and Megazone 23 around the idea that every building was used for something, and was filled with the tools to carry out that something. Instead of thinking of them as empty set pieces in the background they were given their own purposes and composition, to make debris animation feel all the more realistic. Anno, and other animators of the time, would give every single bit of rubble, every tiny spark, and small effects a number, and for each number would come up with the direction they would head and their final position in the cut. These could easily number in the hundreds.
