I understand that Rei needed the screentime, but i wish he could have established Shinji and Asuka's friendship a bit more. Second, i wish the changes he was able to pull off meant more for the overall plot rather than having to be crammed back into the EoE mold. I don't know if there was any kind of editorial pressure to wrap up, especially when they were getting up to the decade mark, but on the whole i feel it was just up to Sadamoto and his lackadaisical work ethic. By his own admission he's lazy and works on stuff sporadically.

The fight scenes these last few chapters have been a snoozefest. It just doesn't work as well as the anime.

I've always maintained the lack of Asuka was one of the manga's great missteps, and i'd love to pick Sadamoto's brain as to why he more or less sidelined her.I feel like especially the closing chapters try to clumsily cram in all the stuff he intended all along. Shinji visiting Asuka in the hospital every day. His stating he wants to protect her. Even her waking up more or less to his pleading. Getting out there and actually doing it. And then the ending itself. There are glimmers of ideas. Cliffs notes of ideas in the manga that needed more development, but just didn't get the priority.I'm willing to forgive some of this as manga shorthand. The story is compressed. Sadamoto said himself in one of the volume interviews that he had to pick and chose what to portray cause it'd be impossible to do a whole one for one of the show. So we have to squint and scrutinize dialogue and body language and stuff to try to eke out the greater picture form the shorthand. It's still imperfect even then, but i still appreciate that there was an attempt. I think since so much time passed he wanted to be done with it. And so he resolved to tell the essential story. And in telling the essential story Asuka got left behind cause she isn't really important to the plot in the same way that Gendo Rei and Shinji, and Yui are. He even expands on Kaji. Why bother even doing that unless he wanted him to be more influential in Shinji and Asuka's lives? But then it all crams back into the EoE mold cause he was running out of time and enthusiasm. I dunno. That's just how i see it.

He mostly cut the introduction stuff for Asuka, but he at least kept the dancing arc (its exclusion from rebuild made me biased against those movies from there onward). The manga treats her with more respect. Anno almost crosses the line into exploitation when it comes to Asuka’s character at a few points. And the manga gives Asuka her most positive ending to date. And it’s not like I dislike Rei either, so developing her more in this version just seems fair. So it all works out in my opinion.
