The story was more of a philosophical debate fate and whether you can change it or not. This gets brought up when the priest dude goes into his past and recounts how he tries to fix his fuck up only to fall back into the cycle a second time. The show ultimately decides to end the show with the message that you should change your fate when you have the power to do so, which was an underlining theme in most of Gainex's shows. I don't think it was the best ending, but I think people are overly harsh towards it considering they wanted to go out with uplifting message for their young audience. I mean, you have to remember that Abenobashi is what lead them to make Gurren Lagann.
