My favourite mahjong match in Akagi is Akagi vs Ichikawa. My favourite mahjong match in any FKMT manga is Seikyo mahjong in Gin to Kin.

Is mahjong hard to learn? Keep in mind I’m retarded.

If you can remember poker hands you can learn mahjong

Scoring is bit complicated, but just arranging tiles into 4 triplets plus pair should be easy enough for you, your computer will tell you when you can tsumo/ron for you

Why do the japanese hold game tiles so weird? Just use your thumb and index finger like a normal person

the thumb is too big, it smacks into other pieces or stones

I have managed to teach people how to play, how to win, how to get yaku, and how to do basic strategy in about 20 minutes

To be fair, you need an IQ above 100 to truly appreciate the subtle intricacies of japanese board games. The way they use their thumb and index finger is way beyond human comprehension!

There's an entry barrier. It's an easy game to learn but to start playing and make a valid hand you need to learn
>The tiles (manzu suit use kanji for the numbers, honor tiles use kanji for wind directions)
>Basic hand shape and game flow
>Making a hand with yaku (there are a few yaku that are piss easy to make and always applicable so you can just start with them, also don't wantonly call since you can permanently fuck a hand with bad calls)
>Not putting yourself in furiten (if you discard ANY tile that COULD complete your hand you can't win off of anyone else's discards which is fairly debilitating. The wording means if you're waiting to complete a sequence where you have a 4-5, a 3 or 6 would finish it; if you've discarded a 6 before the whole 3-6 wait is in furiten and not just the 6.)

Honestly just using an online game client lowers the entry barrier significantly since it'll directly tell you when you've reached tenpai, fucked yourself with no yaku or furiten at the moment it happens, as well as usually being able to notate the manzu and wind tiles to learn them easier

Yeah, perfect example of easy to learn, crazy hard to master for a game of mostly luck where you're expected to win 25% of the time, getting 10 rons in a row like akagi does is completely absurd, but hey

>getting 10 rons in a row like akagi does
Only happened once, it was pretty crazy though. I'll never forget Akagi's wild honba ride

So…..did Washiz LITERALLY have supernatural powers? Or was it more like just randomly lucky with strong instincts? Was a mind-over-matter low-key magic?

It's to prevent cheating through sleight-of-hand.
