Residual love embers that they're refusing to acknowledge so the viewer is left with "yeah, well, neither of them wants it even though the show is framed in that way". It's still ongoing too. They live together, there's no reason it's taking them 11 volumes to figure their shit out.

They announced an anime back in 2021 (when Gimai was still in its infancy), yet got stuck in production hell so hard that Gimai ended up airing first despite its source material debuting much later. Like maybe despite being greenlit ages ago, it was only relatively recently they started actually working on it, and the lack of a PV or even KV means that work must have still been early when the staff/studio were announced.
