I feel like a huge part of what's making junji ito's works seemingly unadaptable is their autistic insistence in copying his very crosshatching-heavy artstyle 1:1, which is simply just too impractical on animated medium. There ARE other ways to capture those vibes, DDD adaptation (whose manga's artstyle is also pretty heavy in crosshatching) managed to do that and seems to be pretty well-received so far
