I know right? for some reason westerners think everything nowadays is made digitally when the vast majority of manga is still hand draw. There's a really dogshit youtube channel called Bad Ink studios that every now and then shows up in my feeds with their ugly ass drawings and they say shit like "look how we are preserving this ancient form of art" in the most pretentious tone possible, when literally the most popular comic book on planet (one piece) is hand draw
makes me wanna punch my computer

I know it isn’t exactly fair to compare promotional art to a character sheet, but what would age have to with purposely morphing his style into something so soft and weightless?

In my opinion, something happened to him where he started to reject what he was known for out of spite or burnout and actively did the opposite of what his fans expected of him.

Like, look how shit this is. It’s a purposeful inversion.

Yeah, I can see. I myself am in a personal project to make reference image for Negima's chapter 81 and worst than not having the spine in the middle section showing that something is missing, people tried to put them together for the official digital scan release while scans from like 00s have all of it. I can't understand why publishers do this. It sucks that I don't have the official japanese digital scans to either criticize it or not too. How the fuck people can fuck it this badly in an official release? Btw, I don't think this image is 100% draw by hand but I don't know, even if its from 2005.

That true. I am was refering more about the "Arc of Triumph" and "Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore". Akamatsu was always a big nerd and would use 3d models in Negima's background while talking about AI, Time Traveling and Space Elevators in the 00s to 10s in there. I think it's very impressive that he tried to apply that to manga back in the day and I love the 3d models for regular building and object that he and his team put in Negima.

That sucks ass, I can't really understand they doing this when theoretically you have the original Japanese scan files which you should be able to request from the original publisher to not have this kind of embarrassment being a thing for older manga. Do you know about the fuck up part about Negima's official scans? The thing is this isn't a thing which happens to all double spreads just a fair share of them, so I can't understand why they can't fix them all. Kondasha, wtf is your problem?

>Did he wake up one day and say to himself “I’m going to do everything but shittier and like I don’t give a fuck anymore”?

Well, artwise he dumped muscules between Dragon Quest VI (1996 and Dragon Quest VII (2000).

For a while afterwards he still tried to mimic his old style when doing art for ols series like Dragonball (like the Kanzenban covers) or Dragon Quest remakes - although even the Kanzenban covers are really inconsistent. Some follow his old art, some go with his modern slimming stuff, but by the time of Super he was pretty much just drawing everything in his "modern" style.

Also, note that it's not just a lack of skill/aging either, he actively wants the new style, since with the Super manga he outright had to do art corrections to better match his modern style at times (like correcting when Toyotaro drew Krilling with some muscle and height, closer to his Cell Saga design into his modern child-like design)

He listed examples that can be proven (though I'm not sure about One Piece myself, though if I had to guess I'd say it's mostly analog).
See >>272420500, the vast majority of manga authors aren't filming themselves drawing, so acting like it's some proven fact that manga is majority digital now is moronic.
>>
>>272423283
The odds are higher though.
>>
>>272423365
The vast majority are digital illustrators because it’s a very trend chasing industry. I remember an old video where two comic artists showed what they purchased from an independent creator manga show at japan. Out of the thousands of artists there, only a small handful had hand drawn work.
>>
>>272423372

>>272423416
Anon, you're still just speculating based on anecdotal evidence. "Digital illustration" is a different field entirely from manga, and an entirely different industry -- the only overlap is that they both involve drawing. If you want to start slinging anecdotes as if they're proof, I've got more than enough to fire back with. But that would be meaningless, because they're proof of precisely nothing at all. Some of Akira's cityscapes are drawn by Satoshi Kon, who was famously Otomo's assistant before he made film director.
All those dutch angles or cool perspectives were things he could just crank out freehand in a manga or a storyboard. Kind of absurd really.

Or, you know, he just used a ruler/tools like anybody else. There's no reason I can see to assume he freehanded any of this.
And while detailed storyboards are cool and all, they're way, way overkill. He could have and should have gotten the idea across in a fraction of the time. Dude was a great director and a fantastic artist but muh detailed storyboards is a meme for wowing nodraws and that's all. If I had to guess, he detailed them while he was thinking about how to proceed.
