I finally got around to watching "Evangelion 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time" (I still can't believe that's the fucking title) after putting it off for years. My impression is that it existed as a superposition of being a satisfying ending and being completely fucking retarded. The introspective psychological stuff near the end was the best part of the movie, but it was constantly brought down by the increasingly absurd and ridiculous technobabble that made up the framing story. It certainly didn't live up to the legacy of End of Evangelion, which I still view as the definitive ending to the series. So, what did everyone here think of this clusterfuck of a film when it first dropped?
It was being insanely praised when it first dropped, I have seen so many people say it was as good as EoE
>>272612284It's utter garbage, Anno shat the bed with 3.0 and went overboard with pandering his favorite waifus Asuka and Kaworu.3.0+1.0 is a half-assed attempt at an ending but it really has nowhere to go, so all it does is repeat the pandering exercise with more marketable outfits and action. There's no plot that coherent, the characters are laughable and only good for pandering, the finale is asinine. People who think this is good are retarded.
I always liked it actually
>>272612284It was pretty damned retarded, and the best bit was all the Sakura fanart.
Can someone explain what was being implied by Mari being referred to as "Maria Iscariot"? They call her that once and then never elaborate on it again.

>>272612284>the increasingly absurd and ridiculous technobabble that made up the framing story. It's a testament of the absoluely retarded EVA community that there are videos on youtube - hours long - explaining the "logic" of that entire pseudo lore.
>>272613520I got it off google images, sue me.
>>272613383>what was being impliedNothing, Anno just thinks Christian stuff is cool
>>272612284>My impression is that it existed as a superposition of being a satisfying ending and being completely fucking retarded.Thats a good way to describe it. The movie has to spend almost a solid hour worldbuilding and doing setup to cover for the fact that the entire movie of 3.0 was a gaping fucking void that left them nothing to build on top of. The deeper you get into the movie, the more absurd the plot becomes. And, in a way, I think that works to its benefit? As in, the plot becomes *so* absurd that Anno is basically taking you and screaming in your face "Stop trying to make sense of this, do not get invested in this lore, just recognize that it is nonsensical and move on."And yet, despite this, by the end of the film I felt... okay. My friends and I have been huge Eva nerds for over a decade and a half, and we all came away from this movie just kind of satisfied.EoE is objectively a better, more impactful ending. But it, like NGE, leaves you with too many questions to feel satisfied. That is the shows strength: everyone who watched NGE and EoE felt like they had a wound that needed stitches but hadn't been stapled shut, and that incomplete feeling drove people to theorize and analyze and drive discussion that made the show an icon from years and years. Rebuild 4 just lets the story reach an ending. An unambiguous, complete, cathartic ending for the characters. It allows, and encourages, the viewer to move on and not dwell on Eva anymore. And that feels like the intended meaning, not some kind of failure to push the brand.

>>272612284It turns out putting out a movie with just nine enemy Evas is more interesting visually and more impactful from a storytelling perspective than if you used nine zillion enemy Evas.
Sex with long hair Rei.

>>272612284>So, what did everyone here think of this clusterfuck of a film when it first dropped?Mostly, general chaos. People tended to latch on to the shipperwars since those posts get the most (You)s. Kawoshin and Asushinfags on suicide watch. Reifags left with their hat in hand wondering what the point of Rei's character even was after the end of 2.0. Anno turbonuking any mention of Asu-ka and Ke-nsuke on 4chan since that invites two awful spammers (I put their names like that because I'm certain that both are bots). Overall, it was quite a lot of fun. At least if you didn't invest yourself in the story of it all. If you went into it as an Eva diehard hoping for a well written story that would wrap up 3.0, you were disappointed. But by that point I'd long given up hope that the Rebuilds would be good, I was just along for the ride>>272612887Ultimately, the best part of 3.0+1.0 was seeing Toji win. He got a happy life with his wife, baby, and healthy sister. >>272615060>The movie has to spend almost a solid hour worldbuilding and doing setup to cover for the fact that the entire movie of 3.0 was a gaping fucking voidYeah, I think 3.0+1.0 never really had a chance after 3.0. There is SO much shit that changes between movies 2 & 3 which is just not explained. Movie 4 would've had to retroactively explain all of that WHILE also moving the plot forwards. Honestly, I want to rewatch the first hour just to make webms of Rei interacting with the world.
