>>272822096I kind of miss the hardcore OVA era
>>272821035Which year hasn't been?
>>272821150This one was greatRIP
>>272820769dude is so old, his horror stories went through looking like Tezuka copies to looking like 90s anime.RIP
>>272820769Aw hell, at least we'll always have his meme face to remember him by. Guwashi in heaven Mr Umezu
Dude was so old, it kind of doesn't feel as sad. Just natural, like when Saitou Takawo or Shigeru Mizuki died. What's sad is that he ended up more or less unknown in the US while Itou Junji was elevated to the god of horror manga status for some reason.
>>272823500i mean i kinda get why he wasn't more popular here, he was weirder and also way more ruthless on his stuff.but that's why it was so great
>>272820769We lost another one
>>272824252To be fair, he quit drawing manga back in the 90s. He was "lost" long time ago.
>>272820769Damn, just started reading some of his work recently RIP
>>272821150man I just bought the hardcover collections of Drifting Classroom and Cat Eyed Boy tooBut fuck if I wouldn't buy the entirety of Fourteen in hardcover in a fucking heartbeat
>>272820769Kazuo Umezu collapsed at his home in Kichijoji, Tokyo in July 2024 and was taken to a hospital, where he was diagnosed with terminal stomach cancer. He did not undergo surgery, and had been receiving end-of-life care at a hospice in Tokyo since September.Even in bed, his enthusiasm for creating remains undiminished, and when a reporter came to visit him, he told them with confidence, "Humans cannot lose to machines. I will create stories that can rival quantum computers." He also revealed some of the ideas for a new work he has been working on, saying, "When I get better, I'll have to start drawing the illustrations for this piece."In August, he established the general incorporated foundation UMEZZ to manage all of his copyrights, and has been eager to plan various events to preserve his work for future generations."I don't like pain," he said, and was only given medication, without any injections or drips, but his physical strength rapidly declined in October. According to Yusuke Ueno, the representative director of the UMEZZ foundation, who was with him throughout his stay at the hospital, on the afternoon of the 28th of that month, he asked the nurse for his favorite energy drink and rice balls, took a sip of the energy drink, said it was delicious, and passed away shortly after."He looked so peaceful. It was so sudden that we were surprised, but it was exactly as the doctor said, 'I don't want to be in pain at the end, so I want to pass away peacefully in my sleep.' That is the only comfort we can find," said Ueno, shrugging his shoulders. At the funeral, which was held only for close friends and family, he was placed in his coffin wearing his trademark red and white striped shirt and red cap. His funeral portrait showed him making the "Gwashi!" pose. The altar was also decorated in a striped pattern with red roses and white carnations.https://www.yomiuri.co.jp/culture/subcul/20241105-OYT1T50066/
RIP
bought some of the Taiwanese physical boxset versions of his works, bought those expensive ass Yamamoto Yohji collaboration shirts and tie, I even watched The Curse of Kazuo Umezu in a local indie theater a while ago. And this ain't even a sticky yet, fucking shame

>The 1990 OVA The Curse of Kazuo Umezu is the only anime adaptation of his work released in his lifetime and it's an odd beast.https://twitter.com/KaiserBeamz/status/1853658961112646060

Damn, what a shame. Drifting Classroom was the very first manga I read online.Mid 2000s, shitty internet, one week to download all volumes by ed2k, still had a blast.
RIP to one of my all-time favorites.I learned how to fall in love with horror as a genre while growing up mainly due to Umezu's work and Fourteen is one of my favorite comics ever. I hold his work dear to me like very few mangaka out there and liked to dream about the possibility of visiting his house someday and maybe hanging out with him for an afternoon hearing he talk about some insane shit. What an absolute legend this man was.Rest in peace, Umezu-sensei, I'll be forever grateful for your work having this much of a lasting impact on me for life.Sticky when, mods?
