Cirque du Freak is a Japanese manga series illustrated by Takahiro Arai and based on the book series The Saga of Darren Shan by Irish author Darren Shan. The manga was published in Shogakukan's Weekly Shōnen Sunday from August 9th, 2006, to February 4th, 2009Chapter 114Previous thread: >>273302868To find the other chapters that were posted thus far; https://desuarchive.org/a/search/subject/%20Daily%20Cirque%20du%20Freak/

>>273327957Oh, the one holding the presents is the one from the 3rd volume. It doesn't look pirate-y from this angle, also Darren looks much older than what he looked like in that volume.

>>273328170And there it is, my favorite page in the manga.
Novel.
Novel END.
>>273328048Damn, this reads so bad lmao. I get that all of this happened but i still don't like the way it's written.
>>273328142>>273328127>>273328094Alright, this at least answers my question. Steve would have turned out alright if he didn't think his best friend betrayed him and was there for him instead.
>>273328170This is really nice.
Yeah alright, i'm now also in the camp that thinks the ending is bad.
>>273328572Why can't the Japanese make good endings? This is a joke.
>>273328142Evil Steve, averted.
>>273328618I know it's a joke but Arai most definitely elevated this whole ending. I would say this whole time fuckery was almost worth it for this page >>273328170 alone.
>>273328170There was never going to be a different final colored page. Thank you all for putting up with me through this, this daily has been a load of fun to discuss a series I never really talked to anyone about back in the day. I feel like I've improved greatly since I started at colors and it's been a great ride.
>>273328024>>273328048this is pure self-wankery by Darren>>273328084>>273328094>>273328127>>273328142this is BL
>>273328170He doesn't have any more worries seeing them together like this.
>>273328048I'm glad Darren's husband Steve supports his writing career.
>>273328792But their related!
>>273328732Fuuuuck, those turqoise particle effects are soo nice looking.
>>273328812What they don't know won't hurt them.

>>273328048>he could have turned it into a movielmao, thank god he didn't live to witness that
>>273328752The wankery is kinda what I love the most about the ending. It gets meta at the last moment in a way that is so cheesy it actually lands for me. It's a wild bit to ride for 12 books.
>>273327863Thank you op, I never posted that much but I was here every thread. A super enjoyable experience.
>>273328732Well done, and willfully crafted. I will remember you as long as I live.
>>273328903KEK
>>273328929I would like the wankery more if i liked the ending. It's so tounge in cheek that you either love it or hate it.
>>273328210Evra, my final beloved.
>>273327863WHAT, SO EARLY. You almost fucked me up.
Hey all, please give your input!https://poal.me/q1qty4
>>273329019From what I have seen of other manga endings, especially lately, it is definitely worthy of a four star rating. The main character does not get cucked, or brutally traumatized and the final chapter has so many memorable moments. Steve finding his home with Darren, Mr. Tall being the last person Darren speaks to, and Darren dying peacefully.Vancha is alone, Gannen is alone, but if you noticed one key detail. They are on opposite sides of the mountain.
>>273328732Looks great. Agree with the other anon on the particles. Been awesome to see so many key moments colorized and always looked forward to them.
>>273329019I'm gonna have to sleep on the ending. My initial impressions are not good.>>273329110>The main character does not get cucked, or brutally traumatizedThat's a low bar
>>273329019Alternate timeline Steve getting a happy ending alone makes the manga a five for me but the other sweet moments, like Darren thinking back on his other loved ones also makes it great. It's a really sweet and tender ending. If it's the novel then it's at most a three, as it's nowhere near as heartfelt.
>>273328024>Vampires and Vampaneze will be able to read my story!Lads... CdFbros... how do we tell Darren?
>>273327957All our Darren's, his autism evolution. I'm gonna miss him. >>273328228Yeah Arai goofed a little there.
>>273329214Shhhh let him imagine.
>>273328094>>273328127>>273328142Stevebros... WE FUCKING WON
>>273329214There will be the wave of newly blooded vampaneze for the war, they would have the ability to read most likely. Like Darren narrates, during the lull following the stalemate over the Lord of Shadows, there is time for a treaty and that's when the books should hit mainstream.
>>273328227Thanks for the early thread. Can't believe I've been following this every day for over 3 months, I don't even remember what I was doing when I caught chapter 3 in the catalog.
>>273328048I'm not sure what I would do if I was sent a bunch of diaries supposedly detailing an alternate life.
>>273328170>>273328187Happy for the young versions but still makes me sad to see Darren disappear entrusting everything will be alright.
>>273329383Did Darren write a bunch of private information about himself? How else would you be able to confirm that your future self wrote it?
>>273329214Don't worry, the movie will spread the message!
>>273329433It's his diaries, I'd imagine the fact it's in his handwriting and starts the way his old diaries do before diverging that there's a strange symmetry to it.
Bloomer ending. The novel ending was shit.
>>273328278It really was a lot of fun. Unexpected I'd ever see ongoing replied to CDF threads. Definitely will miss talking about it. Thank you Yzilma for finally giving the internet the rest of it.
>>273328227really good manga
>>273329483Maybe it's just me but that wouldn't be enough for me to buy into all this crazy shit that is supposedly going to happen in the future.
>>273328278All the villains are on the upper left side!!!
>>273329542I'm gonna miss these three and all of you guys. Its been one hell of a ride.
>>273327863I wish I hadn't waited until so late to join in (very end of October for me) but the threads I got to participate in were fun. I remember the scans cut off before Steve reappeared which made me lose interest because he was my favourite character. I didn't think I'd get so invested again in this series when I downloaded the remaining chapters out of boredom but I went back and reread everything, including the books. And the manga is so good that it's pretty much replaced the originals in my mind.Wish I had all that Darren Shan fanart I saved but lost from crawling around random Japanese personal art websites back in the 2000s. Oh well. Maybe one day it'll get an anime adaptation.
>>273328227Still love it, still do find it funny they just see a little person dissipate into nothing and just smile and continue on to school.
We actually made it to the end.
Pretty funny how Mr. Tiny is a fucking chump compared to the antagonists in Shan's later series. Going from goofy old man that can partially manipulate time to literal interdimensional demons is such a huge jump.
>>273328227>>273328278Dang, seeing the END is just... :(
>>273328732Outstanding work, as allways. Thanks for your work in these threads, I looked forward to every one of them and this one in particular.>>273328227>>273328306What a great ride it was. I ran a bit out of time on the way, but like I said back in https://desuarchive.org/a/thread/271967038/#q271987852, I made a little tribute video to our peak shonen protagonist. Its a bit rough the edges still, but I hope you all enjoy it:https://youtu.be/t5jsi2-MrVw
>>273328210So is Steve still destined to impregnate Darren's sister?
All the Mr. Tiny stuff felt super rushed. I'm curious how much more fleshed out it was meant to be before Shan cut nearly half of what he initially planned to write for the series.

>>273330051Cringekino...
>>273330061Yes, but in the new timeline she is Darius surrogate mother.
>>273330051That was awesome and old school. But how will people know it's not yaoi?
>>273330051Nicely done! Though the volume of the music is pretty low.
>>273330171Do you know if they have high quality scans of 07-Ghost?
>>273330143I feel like Mr. Tiny would have been a terrible villain regardless of how things turned out.
>>273330229I couldn't resist the 2007 Youtube Ending Slide, since both the song - and the entire series I would say, very strongly have the vibe of that time. I mean, just look at this artwork. I am honestly surprised, that we don't have more characters with sunglasses, Katanas or trenchcoats. Its honestly a crime, that the anime never happened - it has all the angsty teen energy to have really went off during that time. Thank you as well Yzmila, for your most kindly service. >>273330268What comes, we take my friend.>>273330292Oh - I forgot setting the audio higher again, I toned it down a bit for editing, since by this point I propably can sing it by memory.
>>273330329They do not.
>>273330449It's beautiful...
>>273328227We are going to get this thread to bump limit right?!
>>273330449Aye, sire.
>>273330449>since by this point I propably can sing it by memory.Same.
>>273330513
>>273330513Yes. Now look at traitorous ass son of a bitch. Also I loved how Arai put Kurda/Harkat as a reflection of one another.
Never forget when history was made.
Who is everyone's favourite character and why?
>>273328322>>273328572>>273328730>>273329525>>273329525I actually like the ending, its is just done a bit to convoluted to fully work, which Arai makes the best of. If you ask me, it’s down to a few basic points:1. Get rid of the skewy point that history can't be changed. I understand that by this the LoS Prophecy is now forever foiled, but its deterministic point conflicts quite a bit with the existentialist themes. Instead have the reason for the Darrens Books beeing published be defeat Mr. Tiny, or make him powerless if their message is followed. 2. . Instead of the convoluted setup, just have Evanna smuggle Darren in or switch him out for someone else – the base point of tricking the trickster is good though. I guess, there was more planned there - has the guy ever detailed what he had planned else?3. Do Arais Ending Scene like that >>273328198, >>273328210 and throw two or three pages in after this, were as Darren goes, he sees how everyone reacts to the book, live happy lives and more importantly how Tiny is seething as fewer and fewer people fall for his tricks. Maybe have him resign himself to living forever in boredom, committing 41% or eventually he just stops thinking.4. I must say here - I am biased by my own theory back then, after the mention of cloning - that Mr. Tiny is just a immortal wizard or something like that, but that’s it. Most of his powers are bullshit – as in he just pulls stuff from different times to appear powerfull. Dragons are mutants, the Coffin and the Hall are just more future tech etc. The ultimate antagonist of the circus series is a magician, a illusionist – a fraud pretending to be destiny itself. 5. By defeating that fraud, who played destiny, when it lies beyond mortal understanding, Darren not only freed himself, but all of the world if his words are heeded and thus is not only getting a happy end for his friends and himself, but also being triumphant even in death – the man who defeated Des.tiny
>>273330853I'd have to go with Evra, he's the ultimate bro that just got fucked over a bunch but still never hesitated to help Darren. Plus he's always been my favorite. I could just as easily say Kurda though since I used both as profile pictures 11-12 years ago.
>>273330470Damn, thanks anyways
>>273330490Thank you. Now that I think of it - atleast the way Gannen grips his sword sometimes, seems a bit samurai - esque, though that could just be Arai beeing influenced by usual manga poses.>>273330515Honestly, the quote is pretty badass, if a bit corny. A lot of quotes from the series honestly - speaking of which - some of you mentioned the immortal line "Evil has a name and his name is Steve" - whats up with that? I must have passed me by.>>273330853Evra Von, honestly. I liked him as the new bro to Darren and over the course of the series propably Gavner, Kurda and Vancha a bit more - but the scene at the final battle did me in. What a brother.
Thanks for the dump, had a blast reading this :)
>>273330570>TraitorousHe tried to unite the Vampires is what he did. He was a brave Vampire Prince. And in this love cave Kurda Smahlt is a hero.
>>273330061Thinking about it, Darius probably won't be born in this timeline. Poor kid.
>>273331141It's in the books supposedly.

>>273330051KINO>>273330571larten deserved it>>273330853larten and harkat are my favorites
>>273330051Pure kino.
>>273330519I still liked it though - normally I get easily annoyed by hearing songs over and over, but this one holds up. Once again, all the Linkin Park etc. AMVs we missed, had we gotten an anime adaption. Missed kino honestly. Particularly the final battles - the one at the Cirque is propably my favorite of them. What great chapters - they even have another great scene with Vancha, who I honestly am a bit sad, for snubbing him a bit of his deserved glory in the video edit. This one alone - it reminds very much of the scene back in the sewers, that color-anon praised for it beeing Vancha fully acknowledging Darren as a fellow prince, while with this one they are not just colleagues, hunters but brothers in arms to the end. I mean - they are related, if in a bit weird way, if you think about it. Not only are Vancha and Gannen the adoptive sons of his half-sister, which kind of makes him their uncle weirdly enough - he is also the actual uncle of their chidlren. Honestly, going by that - Shancus, Darius, Vancha, Gannen and Evannas Three Kids - with Darren its uncle all the way down.
>>273331332Yes.
>>273330570He was a good friend.
>>273331332Yep, combined with the volume dump the next morning some brave anons here did the impossible.
>>273331141>Evil has a name and his name is SteveIt's from the prologue of book 12 although the exact wording is "Evil has a name - Steve Leopard." Unless the line was repeated somewhere else that I'm not aware of. Thankfully a lot of corny dialogue and monologues from the books were cut when it made the jump to manga.
>>273331407One of the most satisfying things throughout the whole story is Darren proving himself to everyone around him. It's not just the usual dicksucking because he is the protagonist. He actually earns the respect of everyone he interacts with.
>>273331469I honestly don't know which one is worse. Just plain "Steve" or his full weird name.
>>273328048Bringing a peaceful end to the War of the Scars is nice but if the past can't be changed and thousands of years into the future the world is destroyed and dominated by dragons then doesn't that mean Tiny eventually gets what he wants, just not through the Lord of Shadows plan?>>273330853Harkat. He was a capable fighter, a loyal companion, and a sassy little shit all rolled into one.
>>273330853Crepsley. He was a little weird in the beginning when he didn't know how to interact with Darren but once they came to an understanding, they started to have fun and become a real duo.
>>273328084
>>273330853Steve. I think his relationship with Darren is what made me like him so much. "Only this one character being by their side prevents them from becoming evil" is a character trope I really like and one that was actually fulfilled here.
>>273331599Their 'tism battle in volume 3 was so funny.
>>273331145Of course, I did it for you. I do it for us!>>273330853Gannen Harst! I have never seen a secondary antagonist steal the show in just emotions, and ellipsis alone. He demanded respect because he was honorable, and he is the most stereotypical vampire of them all. He is a tight ass, but he is emotional, and he is also hesitant but above all else he is loyal.>>273331246Now Darren must do it.
>>273331727That volume was pure magic.
>>273331727>>273331886Volume 3 discussion was my favorite.
Arai did some illustrations of Darren, Harkat, and Steve back in 2017. Not sure if he drew anyone else.
>>273332006That would have been a near 10 year gap too. His artstyle improved amazingly!
>>273332006
>>273331270>>273331469I see. Its hammy, but I am sure 10 year old me would have loved it. I am actually one of the anons who read the books (though not to completion) but didn't knew about the manga, so I am really happy to been on this journey together.>>273331354>>273331391Thank you very much. I initally planned to include some of Coloranons stuff like this, but it felt allready a bit busy. >>273331502Absolutely agree. I actually don't mind the self-insert parts and the bit corny bookwankery >>273328752, its well earned. >>273331187Honestly, while I like Evra a bit more, Kurda has to be my second place. I wonder how the vampire reform arc had played out that some anons theorized about. Its very clear in the story that both vampires and vampaneze are stuck in their ways, which atleast to me, seems the main reason they were so easily manipulated by Tiny. And well - as the Vampets and Vampirites showed - with humanity advancing they should get subtler. On the other hand, you could make the point, that in the modern mass-society world, the individual victims of their attacks are less regognized, since society is less close-knit.

>>273333391It really has been 114 days since we started. This storytime helped me realized I could be happy without crazy women in my life trying to dictate everything I do. It gave me something to look forward to in my final weeks of work during the summer. It allowed me to work with all of you and bond through the comradery. It was private and personal. It was OUR story, no amount of moefags, fujos, BPDemons (other than me) can enter and derail our threads. Even when the /csm/fags came in and got BTFO'd because they couldn't tie to themselves to a culture they had no place in. I am also glad I was able to provide a way to finish the manga for free to so many people I know and do not know. I could not do it alone either. I am sure these threads would have died ten fold without you all here.
>>273331407Also Vancha really is drawn like a DB character.
>>273330853Harkat. A true bro and supremely smug. I didn't see the reveal coming either. >>273328170Any issues with the ending are all worth it for this scene.Mixed feelings about the optimism of the somewhat chancy plan to expose the war via these diaries (more likely a myriad of issues could arise) but I like it as an expression of the author's elation with the series success and belief in the value of writing.
Why did you dump this thread extremely early?
>>273333719He said in the previous thread it was for the euros.
>>273333719For the Europeans. If I could do it again, I would have dumped in the mornings rather than evenings. I only did evenings as a result of getting home late from someone I was seeing and work combined. I wanted to appreciate this chapter together with everyone. Soon I go back to work, and I don't have much of me left. I needed this. I am on the verge of emotional tears, I really love this book and I really love this manga as my favorite of all time.
>>273333496Yeah, truth be told, having this storytime was a great help in waking up, it was something i could look forward to.>>273333719Probably to get a headstart.

Now that I think about it - Kurda, Gavner, Larten, Arra, Harkat, Evra, Gladla, Lare, Vancha, Mika, Seba, Perta, Yerra, Charna, Harnon, Kheldon, Ba'Halen - is there any specific origin of the vampire names? It sounds a bit slavic / celtic to me, but I am not an expert.

>>273334483It occurred to me too that Shan is probably just not a very strong writer in naming characters whose origins he doesn't know about. He probably just throws syllables together, which can work to an extent but if it doesn't work it just sounds awkward.

Holy shit this thread moving fucking fast
>>273330856>its deterministic point conflicts quite a bit with the existentialist themesI see it as a bit more complicated than just that. On a meta level, adding that "changing this will change all events in the timeline" would make it worse, because now the entire story is averted and Tiny has the power to do the same. At the same time, the eponymous nature and the ending otherwise being "suicide by Steve" is a bit too morbid for the personal nature of the story. Allowing there a means to change the events of Darren's life to avoid his tragedies is a nice bookend that nods to the first-person eponymous MC detail with tongue in cheek. Internally, the idea that Tiny can't undo what Darren has done is good for making it seem like a final action that carries the value it does, but the deterministic "the universe will recast you" idea seems to go against the free choice forging the future theme...but without that detail, we likely couldn't contrive enough of a reason to allow this epilogue as Tiny would be a raging asshole to prevent it and it'd be anticlimactic for Evanna to just, like, trick him and do it anyway? Recasting also doesn't solve anything for Tiny, he has to start over from scratch anyway. So Tiny can't be made powerless as an antagonist but also needs a way to hard lose, and the nature of Darren being able to change his own past still fits the nature of the ending, it's just the "recasting" aspect that is the result of time marching on and thus is a way for Tiny to lose. However, ultimately as I see it the "determined" result is simply that: a result. Broadly, it means the Lord of Shadows future is averted by dual death. The exact steps along the way themselves can still be changed by the steppers even if the destination is fixed.I don't expect this will change many minds, but I kinda see it as a foregone problem stemming from the epilogue's very nature to preserve the existing conflict, despite paradoxically unraveling it (for Darren, anyway).
>>273335279It is a celebration, as sad as finishing may be. Anything less would be dishonorable.
>>273335279Finale threads tend to do that. Its a last celebration, sharing all the OC, good times, and a farewell to a fun journey.
>>273335389Lotta good OC from all this.
>>273334762Maybe the real BL were the friends we made along the daily.

>>273335279Last chance to talk about the series until who knows when.
Glad I can properly appreciate this story now, I didn't realize I was a fudanshi yet when I read this in middle school. Now I have to go back to coping for some sort of adaptation for The Demonata
>>273335991Until the next person storytimes it.
>>273331545I'm reminded about previous threads when people were talking about how "Steve" as a name is so ordinary that it's lame when compared to everyone else's. Not sure if this has been brought up before, but the author originally meant for Harkat to not be Kurda, but Evra, and his name would have been Harvey (Evra + H + Y)...which is even lamer than just Steve.
>>273336101Yeah that was in the author's notes posted at the end of that volume. Speaking of which, do we have those for the final volume?
>>273336196For the books? Yeah, it's on his site.

>>273328752>this is pure self-wankery by DarrenApparent since the beginning since he named the MC after himself. It just makes me realize again how I prefer how (most) Japanese mangaka use pennames and don't interact with fans. Not gonna lie, it's a bit awkward when one half or your ship is the blatant self-insert of the author. Also, since he searches his own name a lot online he MUST have run across gay fanart and fics of Darren with Steve and Crepsley.>this is BLyes
>>273328010>>273328024>>273328048Woah, I can't believe this actually happened!
>>273336344The last part about not selling out? Yeah. It's actually funny because he says that, but those books aren't really experimental, avant-garde or underground whatsoever and he was under the same publishing company as J. K. Rowling. I guess he was pressured by his editor to write the next Harry Potter. Not to mention that lot of companies have bought rights for his works and the rights end up expiring before the companies do anything with them.

Never thought I'd revisit this part of my childhood. I was surprised at how many of the minor details I'd remembered, especially from the earlier books/chapters.Thanks for posting, and thanks to the other anon who carried the torch in September/October while yz was shitting everything up like a faggot.
>>273339436True that anon got us through many chapters. I'm glad we kept the format though, like I said then I like the clean daily's.
Remember that time most boards got wiped when it was still pretty early after the chapter was posted?
>>273339436>Other anonThere was actually multiple. I picked up the first thread (18) when Yzzy got too drunk and later down the line (48-54) when he had a more valid reason I shouldn't divulge. Somebody else (if not more) did the rest.

>>273339942Sure, I aim somehow in the future to find a way to make money doing something like this and I can see my real progress as they go along, but since I can't really monetize these pages, here's the zip link (spelled out to avoid being spamblocked):>(standard https prefix) file DOT io SLASH euImAvCYCWk4
Thank you for the story time man. I read the manga more than 10 years ago, but stopped since the publisher in my country dropped it. Finally reached the ending now, not perfect but it was a nice journey.

>>273341209It's funny if you look there are pretty dedicated fans of the movie version, usually because it was their introduction.
>>273341209Let's change the content but also don't involve the author, what could go wrong?
>>273341280>>273341247I guess so. My friend who only watched the movie thought it was cool. I didn't watch it since i already lost interest in it immediately after hearing from him how the story went in the movie.
