Eventually, it's not about putting up with suffering. Your mind will fixate on things to distract them from their misery. To the point of wanting to torment the man that last humiliated you and left you on your ass, before you were tortured and mutilated in a dungeon. Gut's didn't cause Griffith's situation really, because Griffith should have been more honest about his feelings for Guts and his love/trust in him. But Gut's had to move on, Griffith should have seen that much right? Regardless, this small thing escalated into the darkest of hate for Griffith while down there. This is the power of the mind under stress, it seeks things to abuse to release itself or things to fixate upon to get them through. (Funnily, this is why people tolerate society and it's failures too, by deluding themselves into thinking contributing to it is to their benefit.)Anyway, this is how the mind, without much conscious thought will latch onto things to get them through life. Guts is purely struggling to live at all at this point and Casca is the only thing that really keeps him going, as is Griffith's situation (though I can't tell if it's fixation on his goal, fixation on guts or even guilt about what he had done in "a moment of brutalised madness").

I got a feeling Casca is going to side with Griffith. Miura really kept hammering it down to readers that Casca's desire is not the same as Gut's desire. Imagine going through all of that trouble just to save her and she becomes Griffith's sword like she had always dreamed of. It would be even more bitter if even became an apostle and Guts wound up facing her in combat but not discovering who the identity of the apostle was but also realising midway through fighting there was something really familiar about it. I think it would be one of the most tragic things in all of manga. Did we ever work out the identity of the elephant whale apostle?
