>Gourmet pun submitted by fan!
Shimabakuro reaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaally comes to appreciate this. I think it's fair to say that he even develop entire plot elements and characters into important things, later, due to how much he enjoys the pun a fan submits for a beast, ingredient, or person.

They eat, well, normal food. Depending on how much they can pay, of course.
I mean, most high tier restaurants on your city are so expensive that even your monthly income wouldn't be enough to pay for a single meal, but you still can manage to eat delicious food now and then, right?

Probably my favorite part of the volume, a d this has been a trend throughout too, is that Toriko, despite having the shounen MC traits like eating endless amounts of food, maybe some fightfaggotry and presumably being blind to women wanting to gobble up his cock...
he's a pretty sociable guy. He goes places, people know him, and he's just friends with everyone.

>>273437223
Man, remembering Build King just makes me sad. I don't want to be the negative guy in the room but even I could tell at a glance that there was no way in hell the Toriko formula could be applied to building houses. I didn't want to be proven right but I was, and I'm sure tons of people tried to warn the author just as well but he just ignored 'em all and went on with this... thing. The author is good at drawing fightfag stuff, good at drawing big monsters and good at fantasy worldbuilding... Why houses? Why would that fit in, why would that work? Did he get cocky?

Yes, I know. You can tell they were panicking when established mangaka with completed series like Kishimoto and Shimabukuro got their subsequent series axed. Fame earned them a foot in the door to try again, but also was a double-edged sword and set the bar REALLY high.

Although I think Samurai 8 could've really used some early editorial reigning. Kishimoto redefined a bunch of terms and didn't explain them to the reader for a very long time, and this combined with the fluidic art caused people to just be massively confused on what the fuck was going on.

I used to think the guy who did Fairy Tale was creatively bankrupt and a coward for just doing Fairy Tale in space as their next run. However when you step back and look at what happened to those authors you mention, getting cocky with their next manga and BTFO'ing their own career, I can understand the merits of keeping it safe and just giving to the audience the same stuff that you know they'll enjoy. Sure achieving the same level of success with a different genre/setting/formula is impressive, but there's a point where it stops being about confidence and it's just the spoiled author getting cocky.

>but even I could tell at a glance that there was no way in hell the Toriko formula could be applied to building houses
Nah, it absolutely could but Shim fucked himself right out of the gate with some decisions. Give Soara and the Monster's House a read, it's proof that a series about building fantastical houses can work. And much like how food is a central facet of Toriko's world, places of shelter would easily be a key aspect of a setting as that's one of the other basic needs.

For a Toriko flavored world you just need to have insane monsters and locations where building materials are procured, and the types of things each house must be designed around write themselves. Look at the different BioTropes in Toriko and some of the creatures running around. How about a house designed to withstand land sharks that migrate through the region. Or a house built at the bottom of the puffer whale cavern designed to withstand incredible pressures. BK tried to do this with things like the upsidedown house but part of what makes Toriko work is that no matter how bullshit things will become with regard to powerlevels, people still need to be skilled fighters and chefs to tackle problems.

Build King ran too fast into both a power system, but he also gave the MC a tool that invalidated many steps that go towards building a house. Imagine if Komatsu didn't need to be a master chef during the Puffer Whale arc and instead he just konked the fish with a tuning fork and it was perfectly prepared? That's how much I loathe that hammer from Build King. Not to mention a color coded magic system in a black and white manga. But said magic also takes away from characters having to know how to build a house since they can just use aura to supplant skills.

Build King could have worked but I think Shim was only good at the idea of selling houses, not building them. He needed to do more research on that front.
>>
>>273438048
Yeah, could have framed that better. I thought he was ONLY a creatively bankrupt piece of shit, but he's creatively bankrupted + decently smart. He did Fairy Tale in space because he knew what he could do and what would work. Naruto in space didn't fly so good, it's creative bankruptcy that couldn't even manage to hack its way through and remain decently enjoyable despite being formulaic and repetitive.

I didn't mention it in this post but I did read that manga and boy it's good. I didn't want to make it sound like I don't think a manga about houses can work, I just don't think THIS author can make it work. If Soara and the Monster's House is a 8/10 manga and Toriko is a 9/10 manga, then the author of Toriko trying to replicate Soara would result in a 3/10. They draw big manly battles, cartoonish over-reactions, gigantic monsters and widescale environmental exploration/destruction. Make them draw happy quiet slice of life about understanding people's living conditions and how they want to peacefully live their life, that's not gonna work. It can work for someone, somewhere, but this situation's a dud. At least Build King wasn't a blunder of max magnitude since the author didn't completely step out of their comfort zone, they still tried to satisfy those who were there for big fights and crazy sense of scales. It just wasn't enough to dodge the axe.

I'm not biased, I (dis)respect Hiro Mashima on the same level as I (dis)respect Osamu Tezuka for pulling this shit, and would extend the same frown toward a 10 years old who scribble comic book characters on the back of their school papers and always reuse the same faces. It is what it is, we all know what's going on and giving it a fancy name like Star System just makes me frown harder at Osamu than I would frown at Mashima or the 10 years old, actually I wouldn't even bother frowning at the last two, just the first. Of course Osamu Tezuka is still an absolute legend in many aspects, this is the one thing I'm not gonna lick his boots over for.

>Make them draw happy quiet slice of life about understanding people's living conditions and how they want to peacefully live their life, that's not gonna work
That's the thing, Build King didn't have to be a quiet series. The comparison to Soara was just to illustrate that houses as a central theme can work. It's entirely possible to have a loud and climactic fight series where !Toriko is a guy tasked with procuring rare and exotic building materials and !Komatsu is some architect that has to cater to increasingly weirder and more dangerous demands for housing. I can even imagine a whole side plot where characters have to remove dangerous creatures from a place where they want to build a house. Some would decide to kill on sight but others might take the time to find a suitable location for even those creature. Much like how Toriko doesn't kill unless he plans to eat, you can have a character that upholds that everything deserves to have a home so he won't take any shortcuts just for the client. In my mind it's very easy to shift around the current story to accommodate architecture if that is the goal.

We haven't gotten to it yet in the storytime but there literally a Gourmet Architect and they talk a lot about safe houses when dealing with the Gourmet World so I know Shima gets the concepts. The execution of BK to me seems like Shima wasn't really interested in the Build part of his story because it's the weakest element by far. I know he was selling houses but maybe he should have picked a topic he was more interested in
