Alright, it is Saturday and I am gonna post the twenty-eighth volume of Inuyasha. Feel free to react or comment on any panel, though I appreciate if image replies are not used during the dump. Feel free to discuss anything Inuyasha related after the dump.

Previous thread: >>274580763

Despite the OP image, I am using the VizBig 3-in-1 localization which does not feature this cover exactly. Be aware that some of the larger images have been edited to be lower quality due to image size limits.
>>
Starting us off with the cover of the 3-in-1 Volume. Image resized for posting.
>>
Here's the inner illustration for Volume 27 in the 3-in-1. Infiltration.
>>
Have you had a situation yet where your trip was necessary?
>>
June 19th, 2002. Author's note:
"Q: What's something from the past that hasn't changed?
A: The theme of this question is too big, I don't know."
>>

Furinkan notes that: "A stunned Sango calls Hakushin "miira" (ミイラ) which means "mummy". The term comes to Japan from the Portuguese word "mirra"."

>>274749093
Not really, fortunately. I usually take it off right when I finish the dump, but I try to use it when I post so if people do want to filter it, they can and I don't have to worry about someone pretending to be me and posting gore or something.
>>
Happy New Year and thank you OP
>>
>>274749258
Asking the question on everyone's mind.
>>
>>274749294
A lot happening. I liked the cover showing both storylines.

>>274749286
No problem! And happy new year! Sorry for the late start, the holidays have been very busy for me.
>>
>>274749355
I wonder how many fans of Inuyasha prefer the human look.

Even the robe?

I wonder how often it played out like that...

>>274749947
As mentioned before, this is basically the process.

I imagine Rumiko read about this process and was horrified by the idea of being in there and regretting it and thought of this.

Damn it.

>>274750497
Do you? And yeah, our characters can't really touch upon the moral situation, they need to be pragmatic.

This is a note from Furinkan that pertains to the Wind Tunnel overall: "Hakushin is the only person who has been shown to be able to somehwat resist Miroku's Wind Tunnel." I'm not sure if that's quite true? I feel we had one more, but it was due to some external factor of some sort.

I like this little moment with Jakotsu. At peace with it. Also, Furinkan mentions that:

"The word "katami" (形見) is used once again. It means "souvenir" though the deeper connotation is a "keepsake of someone who has died". Consequently Jakotsu is not simply saying he will keep Inuyasha's ears for himself but making it clear that Inuyasha will die in the process."
>>
>>274752691
I feel that top panel is the majority of Jakotsu panels.
>>
>>274752767
Farewell.
>>
>>274752935
End of chapter!
>>
I know the Band of Seven arc is filler but it grew on me. The villains are memorable and frankly better than Naraku.
>>
Original title is "鼓動" which means 'beat', 'pulse', 'throb'.

Also, apparently only the cover was in full color.

July 3rd, 2002. Author's note:
"Q: What test left an impression on you?
A: Entering the Newcomer's Award contest was a test wasn't it?"
>>
>>274753139
Back in business.

>>274753097
Honestly, I understand what people mean by filler, but I don't like applying it to canon stuff. Especially in a story like Inuyasha since ultimately, you're reading it for the adventure and the fights and whatnot. I am enjoying it more than I remember liking it on this reread.
>>
>>274753248
>>
>>274753285
No more boundary, so Naraku smelly.

>'pulse', 'throb'.
Jakotsu likes that
>>
>>274753426
I remember being surprised by this when I first read it, but now that I reread it, he really did last a lot longer than the two that came before him in the series. Based on that interview with the editor and Takahashi's comment regarding it, it seems like it was in part due to his influence. I guess I was surprised because we had him survive, only for a teeny bit though.

Her comment was: "Takahashi: I had drawn the last days of Jakotsu a little too easily, but you told me to "stick with him just a little longer" and I was able to extend his life a few more pages. I was glad." It wonder if he was going to die within his first couple of chapters like Kyokotsu and Mukotsu.

She also mentioned in a 2022 interview that: "It was Jakotsu that had many readers asking for him to stick around longer, but I had to kill him... I too was very sad when I drew the end of Jakotsu."
>>
>>274753586
That Saimyosho is going to give the hairpin to his sweetie.
>>
>>274753097
I wouldn't call it filler. It was a good change of pace. I think they probably started dying a little too fast though.
>>
>>274753634
Gruesome.
>>
>>274753097
>>274753248
People are often too quick to conflate “filler” with a bodyguard arc. Whether they’re appear in succession or not, it’s a group of elite warriors that antagonize the heroes for whatever reason the villain needs: to buy time, to prove the heroes, to whittle their ranks before a fight, and so on. Compare the Sanctuary fight against the golden saints in Saint Seiya, or the Patch fight at the end of Shaman King.

He seems pretty bitter about all this.

I wonder if there even was a location at which Hakushin’s barrier might have been strong enough to purify Sesshomaru.

Rumiko Takahashi had the following to say about Bankotsu on Twitter on September 28th, 2021:

"Since he was going to be the linchpin of the Band of Seven my concept was "he has to be the coolest". Afterwards I thought he gave off a very scary presence. Rather than give a proper greeting he's the type just to cut your head off.
No one had worn a braid in Inuyasha since Hiten. I wanted the sight of it flicking and flitting to become a familiar sight during action scenes. Bankotsu is really a barbaric barbarian.

Mr. Kusao's voice was really the best."

Furinkan's translation note: "Bankotsu (蛮骨) is written with the kanji for "barbarian" (蛮) so Takahashi is punning his name when she says he is a barbaric barbarian."

I'm actually surprised that Bankotsu didn't end up being as much of a stoic as Sessh given her plan. I am pleasantly surprised though.
>>
>>274755814
>He has 4 shards (not counting the sword) and I have 3
>We're practically even!

Bruh
>>
>>274755928
Also, from a Q&A in 2021 Takahashi said the following:

"[Q:] InterviewI think that the strongest in the Band of Seven is Bankotsu, but in what order are the other six ranked for their strength? Also, I would like to know each of their ages if possible!
[Takahashi:] Bankotsu (17) is the strongest, Kyokotsu (30) and then Mukotsu (33) are weak because they died early. Renkotsu (24) is the second strongest because he is a little smarter than everyone else. Ginkotsu (22) is almost a weapon, so he is the third. Between Jakotsu (20) and the Suikotsu (26) Jakotsu would win due to the difference in the reach of their weapons. How's that for the order? The age of each person has been decided appropriately now, so if the same question is asked again in a few years, it may change. In that case, please forgive me."

Yeah, but I was wondering if at a certain point the barrier would be strong enough to purify him, or if Sesshomaru would be able to get near Hakushin as close as Miroku and Sango were without dying. Probably not, seeing as him being right on the mountain slopes only managed to slow him down a bit.
>>
>>274756147
>>274756165

>>
>>274756165
Furinkan notes that: "When Hakushin dissolves, Kikyo comments, "成仏された" (jobutsusareta). The typical context would be "he resting in peace" or "he's gone to heaven". Because of the context of Hakushin as a living Buddha another translation could be "he has become a Buddha" or "he has entered Nirvana"."

I like this moment.
>>
It's not fair bros. I just want Kikyo to hug me and tell me I wasn't so bad as I die.
>>
>>274754929
>>274755406
But he was trying to ascend his humanity. That's the whole point of becoming a living saint. Telling him he's only human is pouring salt in the wound. In fact all his bad vibes should have ruined his spiritual powers.

I feel like Japanese are sorta inconsistent about whether corrupt priests retain their holy powers. Depends on what a given story is trying to say. In this case, he had legitimately earned his power up to the point of his mummification, but then he had a moment of weakness and Naraku intervened, which put him in this limbo state. Perhaps he could've made peace with himself if not for Naraku and the heavens somehow recognize that? Hard to say, since this isn't a very rigid setting.
>>
>>274756982
Avenge them against who?
>Kyokotsu: killed by Koga
>Mukotsu: killed by Sesshomaru
>Ginkotsu: killed by Koga

>>
>>274757286
End of chapter. I genuinely love this page. I definitely laughed out loud on my first readthrough but I do think it is suitably creepy.
>>
>>274756867
They're setting this up as a big climax, but I feel like the Band of Seven needed more hyping up. We should have seen the damage the they could create way before Koga ran into Kyokotsu. Koga should have barely survived only to find out, he was the weakest of them, like the trope goes. It's already pretty uncanny how strong Bankotsu is, but I still felt like he was never a real challenge to Inuyasha without the purifying aura getting in the way. I could believe he's a threat not due to pure brawn but experience on battlefields if Rumiko leaned more into that.

Naraku clearly loves living in dark pits. So why don't they just go dig a really nice dark pit, like the best dark pit you've ever seen, then wait for Naraku to settle in before plugging up the pit with a really big holy rock.
Problem solved.

Furinkan notes that: "It is interesting to note that as Ginta and Hakkaku chase behind Koga they simply address him as "Koga" with no honorific such as "-san", "-sama" or "-kun". In other words they do not treat him in a formalized hierarchical way or the nature of their relationship is quite informal."

I wonder if they're consistent about that? He is their leader, but he definitely is their friend. They also did call him an idiot not that long ago.

End of the line. Here's is the full bit from Rumiko's 2022 Q&A regarding Bankotsu:

"Q15: Bankotsu is popular despite his short appearance, but was there ever a case, not only with Bankotsu but others, where you might consider extending his life or increasing his appearances in response to readers' reception?

[Takahashi:] The Band of Seven were dead in the beginning of their story, and as long as they were revived via the Shikon Jewel, they had no choice but to die again. So I didn't extend their lives, but I thought I'd give them good endings.

And when the Band of Seven debuted and two of them were killed off pretty quickly, as a result the remaining five people had to divide the roles, and as a result, their number of appearances increased. After that, I drew while thinking about who they could play off of among Inuyasha's allies.

It was Jakotsu that had many readers asking for him to stick around longer, but I had to kill him... I too was very sad when I drew the end of Jakotsu.

Q16: Speaking of "leaders of the enemy's army," you have many fascinating characters in many works, but can you tell us about any characters or works that have influenced you?

[Takahashi:] I like the excitement of a manga that deals with the coming together of a group of friends until they are all together. Conversely, in creating the leader figure, I tried not to disappoint the readers' expectations."

Furinkan has a note regarding what was localized as 'demonling' (which is a good one, I feel): "When Naraku explains the things he does not want in his new body he says humans such as Bankotsu, half-demons like Inuyasha and "little demons" (小妖怪/shoyokai) like Shippo."

I'd hardly call it "filler". Especially because it still ends up being plot-relevant by being directly tied to Naraku evading detection from everyone for so long.

Furinkan says: "The coat that Naraku wears in his new form is a "battle coat" (陣羽織/jinbaori). It is a long coat designed to be worn over armor."

I'm not sure how they determine that, but I guess it must be a particular style. I can sort of see it.

Feel free to use the thread to discuss anything Inuyasha related. I have some stuff I'll be using to bump the thread here and there. Though probably tomorrow. I messed up and this thread ran super late. I'm sorry everyone. The holidays have been killer.

I will be returning Saturday to dump Volume 29.

Band of Seven Arc sucked, it dragged on for far too long and accomplished nothing except killing Kikyo off so we can have the gang wangst about her inevitable return (again).

Jakotsu best boy though, I liked it just for him.

Here is the associated wideban extra. This one is the second one about the Band of Seven. There are two wideban extras about this topic, here's the previous one: >>274484880. As usual, I will have to use two posts to fit it and will be spoilering things that relate to stuff that hasn't been shown yet.

"Pitting One Team Against the Other

There was something unique about the Band of Seven storyline for me, and that was the team vs team aspect of it. With Suikotsu, his multiple personalities were vital to his character. When he’s the “good” Suikotsu, he’s such a good person he could even fool me, the creator. Which was intentional. But in the end, of course, he’s a member of the Band of Seven, meaning he’s going to have to face off against Inuyasha and company, and I thought Kikyo was the perfect opponent for him. He dies after Kikyo shoots an arrow directly into his Shikon shard, purifying it and allowing the “good” Suikotsu to return. Only Kikyo could have done that for him.

Kyokotsu is the first member of the band that we meet, and he is offed immediately, but that was the role I needed him to fulfill. In other words, he was the standard “weakest of the bunch” villain (laughs). You could say the same thing about Mukotsu. He’s also killed pretty quickly. But a creep like that isn’t someone you’d want around very long anyway.

As for Ginkotsu, my initial design left a lot to be desired, and I worked on improving him from there. I knew from the beginning that I wanted to try turning him into a vehicle at some point, though. Renkotsu is the type you always want as a member of a group like this, disloyal and looking to topple the leader and gain control. Having someone like him in the mix is better than having a cohesive group where everyone gets along."

Other half of the manga wideban extra.

"A Villain’s Plans

I don’t think any member of the Band of Seven was thinking very far into the future, which is exactly how I wanted them. I doubt they were thinking much of anything in the moments before their deaths. After being resurrected, all they had to act on was this temporary goal of defeating Inuyasha. I don’t think they did it because that was what they were told so much as because they just liked fighting.

The Group of Comrades I’d Always Wanted

I’d always wanted to have a group of comrades who would be defeated one at a time, like in a Masami Kurumada story. It’s so fun! I loved reading those types of stories and always wanted to try my hand at one. I knew there would be challenges, but I decided to just do my best and give it a go."
>>
>>274753586
>>274756009
Jakotsu technically did the same thing to Suikotsu so you can't feel too bad for him.
>>

Bankotsu ending in the manga is just lame
>>
>>274759023
I appreciate your HSR reference
>>
>>274769165
What was the difference?
>>
>>274762689
Jakotsu, not because of his "character" but how he doesn't care about staying alive or taking stuff. He simply remains true to his desire to murder (cute) boys till the end. I guess you could say the same about Gin and Sui but Gin is just a mindless weapon while Sui prefers the random murdering spree.
>>
>>274769623
Inuyasha actually used bakuryuha against him
>>
>>274770349
But he has no demonic aura?
>>
>>274771385
In the anime, Bankotsu's ultimate attack which he achieved by storing power in Banryu by slaying 1000 humans and 1000 yokai has demonic aura.
>>

Mukotsu was too strong? At least in the anime he had a special poison for yokai, but it still wasn't enough to affect Sesshomaru.
>>
I came here to make an annoucement: Band of the 7 namek fucking sucked but had lots of wasted potential

>lots of enemies
>clashes with anyone instead of just inuyasha
>Lord Hakushin a punished monk denied of his ascension
>the whole clash between human flaws, achieving peace and corruption as a theme
>the whole looming betrayal among the band
>the tension of the group for an impending attack
But sadly this was a fodder arc so it reached 1/3rd of its potential
>>
>>274757218
The funny thing about Koga killing Ginkotsu is that the anime even took that away from him. In the anime, Ginkotsu survived his cannon getting blown up and continued fighting. He only died because he self-destructed to protect Renkotsu and give him his shard, and the explosion is what injured Koga. So Koga didn't even get the kill, and his injury was from Ginkotsu's sacrifice instead of from his own gambit to defeat him.

I disagree with almost everything you've said. The trope of one guy barely beating the new enemy only to reveal he was the weakest of his group fucking sucks! I'm glad Koga got some love this arc. I also think Bankotsu is hyped up enough AND lives up to said hype.He and Inuyasha were pretty well matched despite Bankotsu only having the strength of a human when they first met. As a human, Bankotsu is at a disadvantage, so him getting a bunch of shards makes it more fair and a little more enraging when they finally showdown without something interrupting. Also, the 7 did wreak some havoc on that fortress where the halberd was kept
