I've been re-watching Hanasaku Iroha recently, I remembered enjoying it back when it first aired and thought some of the shine might have worn off many years later but it's actually still amazing and so damn comfy. What happened to good escapism in anime feels like its been ages since there's been a real stand-out Iyashikei show, last one I remember was Flying Witch. Anyway, this is a Hanasaku Iroha thread.
what the fuck was her problem?
>>274808550She was literally getting cucked by Ohana, I can understand why she was mad.
>>274808343I'd hesitate to call any Okada script iyashikei with all the drama she indulges in, but good show.Yuina is for marrying me. Ohana is for marrying Kou-chan. Anons can fight over the heron.>>274808550Hobiron ends up a single cat lady and that's ok because cats are capable of so much love.
I have so much nostalgia for this show, it just seems so comfy to me like perfect. The soundtrack is 10/10 too.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bi2gGg8pHHw
>>274808835PAW put a lot of effort into their soundtracks back thenThe accordion track is superb
>>274809158>back thenAppare had Evan Call.Aquatope had whatever you want to call that but it was comfy.Akiba Maid War had someone who really understood the 1970s/80s yakuza drama vibe.
>>274809158Yeah, Glass Lip was awful but man the soundtrack was amazing I remember watching the episode with this in it and just being blow away:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kw19XDSB0ZII really miss old PA works, last anime I remember by them was Irodoku or actually Aquatope was pretty good.
>>274809245Watch Akiba, Buddy Daddies and Mayonaka Punch.Komada might be good too but no one has watched it because distribution is apparently not important for movies(?)
>>274808343I'd volunteer to work at their ryoukan as long as it wasn't run by Grandma Hitler.Seriously. When do we get to see Ohana inherit the family business and stumble in the most huggable ways?
>>274809434>Grandma HitlerNo way, she was fucking good. She was hard but she was always right, I 100% respect her she was a great character.
>>274809488Just because she was hard-working doesn't mean she was right. Her centuries-old family business lost against Yuina-senpai's tacky nouveau riche competition because they understood what customers want.Great character? Sure. Role model? Hell no.
Nako was unbelievably hot
>>274809609Nako had big tiddies but had that teen mom energy which made less hot than Ohana's mom who was an actual teen mom and also a trainwreck of a person who had to let her own daughter raise her (praise Okada for giving us this painful but true insight into the human condition).
>>274809714>which made less hotI wish I were literate, but alas, my cursed ancestors have not granted me with that ability.
>>274809594But the reason the business does well at points is because Ohana follows the same principles as her, like the whole "people come to Kisui because its the same each time" and "every customer is equal" etc. and that plays to her advantage when the magazine reviewers turn up and the business lady woman focuses on who she thinks it is which turns out to be wrong. The only good idea she had was the old kimono's that manager used to wear a long time ago that Ohana and Nako wore for a short while that stirred some old memories in customers.
>>274809785>But the reason the business does well at points is because OhanaSee? It's time for the only girl who ever did anything right to inherit the crown.
>>274809862I don't disagree, Ohana would be a great manager she easily proves herself in that regard.
>>274809594>Her centuries-old family business lost against Yuina-senpai's tacky nouveau riche competition because they understood what customers wantYes, but there is a market for a traditional onsen ryokan. The issue is ultimately that she was getting too old to run the ryoukan and there was no future after she left, because all her children (and Ohana) are complete buffoons who are too stupid to run a business.>>274809901Ohana would be a terrible manager.
Minchi is precious.
>>274810162>Yes, but there is a market for a traditional onsen ryokan. There may be in a few years, but there wasn't during the period the series took place in. Being unaware of the 20 year nostalgia cycle is bad business sense.>because all her children (and Ohana) are complete buffoons who are too stupid to run a business. That's because she didn't train them early enough or with the kind of feedback that matched their social capacities. Literal skill issue.>>274810162>Ohana would be a terrible manager. At her current age? Absolutey? Ten years later? She'd probably outclass her mom and grandma in no time flat.
>>274810269>there wasn't during the period the series took place inthere always isit's the standard, it's what's expectedAnd you can always sell it up, if you need to.>with the kind of feedback that matched their social capacitiesNothing could fix either of the two.
>>274810306>it's the standard, it's what's expectedThis attitude is why the Japanese economy is faltering.>Nothing could fix either of the two.The fuccboi? Maybe. Ohana? All she needs is life experience and the guidance of a responsible adult (not her mom).
This whole scene made an impression on me when the show was airing. Maybe it was the absurdity of it in what was an otherwise grounded drama, and how the rapist suicidal man gets away with everything, including a free stay and job at the inn
>>274810389>This attitude is why the Japanese economy is faltering. No, it really is not. You don't need to innovate bread. I just want bread. Hospitality has similar standards, for the most part.Especially in the more traditional sector.
>>274810419>You don't need to innovate bread. I just want bread.Spoken like a man who has never had proper bread.
>>274810232You must be Buddhist to consider even the most vile and disgusting lifeforms precious. And you'd need the patience of a Buddhist monk to put up with her for more than five minutes.
I'll try this show now. I'm in my 2010s anime phase anyway
>>274810465"proper bread" is made according to a recipe that is hundreds of years oldThere is nothing you can do to improve on the recipe, you can only make it "not bread" anymore. The issue I see is that you don't really understand economics and how competition works. Kissuisou does not compete with the Onsen Gigaplex Super Tower, they do not draw the same kinds of customers and making Kissuisou profitable is fairly simple. You sell it up, slightly and tastefully play up the taisho roman angle. This would have done well even 10 years ago.

>>274810162There's a market for traditional onsen but the plain fact of the matter is that grandma was running a shitty business. It was situated in an area that didn't get a lot of tourist traffic, its only bath was small and generic, it had small rooms without decent views, the only amenity was room service by a good but not celebrated chef. There was simply no reason to visit it as opposed to any other onsen hotel in Japan. There's a reason it's a failing business and Ohana only believes otherwise because she's an impressionable dipshit.

I watched this when I was new to anime, thought it was boring and characters weird. Nowadays I appreciate quality anime more and like PA Works, so I should rewatch this.
>>274818817Most of the characters are still very weird, Ohana most of all. That's what made the show interesting to me, I kept watching just to see what harebrained thing she'd do next. Remember that episode where they didn't have a chef during a rush hour, so her bright idea was to leave the hotel, go all the way to the city, and literally run around the entire city looking for him?
HOBIRON
>>274808343This was the first show that seriously made me want to visit or even live in Japan. It has one of the comfiest settings I've seen in anime
When I went to Japan I booked a ryokan entirely because of this show. They did hire young girls to serve dinner. It was $700/night.
>>274821141Both Saten and Ohana were Kanae Itou sluts

>>274808343I should rewatch the anime sometime soon, I think I will do it once im done with some of the shows from World Masterpiece Theater
>>274821716How many men?
My favorite anime of all time.I love the characters, the setting, the atmosphere, the story; I fucking love everything about it, it clicked with me in such a way no other series has ever done so.I love Portuguese bread btw.
>>274808343>good escapism in anime>characters literally addicted to being wagies
>>274819184Ohana's standout quality is that she's a hardheaded and plucky girl. No matter the situation, she always tries to keep a positive attitude and when things go wrong she will fight hard to make things right and not give up. She stumbles and makes mistakes a lot. She certainly has flaws which can lead her to end up in a pathetic state and crying. But at the end of the day, she always recovers and learns from her mistakes and will keep giving it her all. Ohana is unironically the perfect example of how to write a strong female character which Hollywood should learn from.
>>274810389>oh no, not the imaginary line going down! Let's import immigrants NOW!
>>274822844She's not a "strong character", she's a textbook example of a martyr complex. She constantly seeks out the hardest and most self-denying way to do things because she operates on magical thinking that suffering = virtue. There's an arc in the show where she actually gets mad at some other waitresses because they quit their job because they had a shitty boss. They were entirely in the right to quit, their boss wasn't delegating or organizing properly and was slacking off during work hours, Ohana just considers them wrong on principle because they did not put up with it for no reason. Ohana believes that the phrase "misery builds character" is a tautology.
>>274808343I watched this anime when it aired but can't seem to remember the plot.
>>274823088Ohana cannot have a martyr complex since she refuses to feel sorry for herself. Your assessment of Ohana is completely wrong. She acts the way she does because she acts before she thinks and her approach to problems is to run into them head on. The manager didn't have problems delegating or organizing. His problem is that he was too strict on the employees and didn't listen to them. Ohana even tells him to his face that he was doing a shitty job and it's his fault the waitresses quit. She didn't get mad at the waitresses for not putting up with it. She was mad that they were apathetic and unprofessional while on the job then badmouthed it after they quit when they never took their job seriously. A strong character doesn't mean smart or perfect. Ohana is definitely a strong female character but she's active and determined, always speaks her mind, and doesn't let anything get in her way.
>>274811921The first time watching I wasn’t exactly bored but I didn’t find the story that interesting. I dropped around ep 7 or something like that.Years pass and my taste grows heavily into SOL/drama/iyashikei. Last year somehow I remember Hanasaku Iroha and how I dropped it. I restart the series from the beginning and what do you know I really liked it and finished it this time. Now this thread made me consider to rewatch it. It’s really good!
Why is Natsuki Hanae such a bigshot Shonen seiyuu now? I remember when he was just Wein From Tari Tari and Hikari from Nagi no Asukara. What was his big break?
>>274824932A martyr complex isn't exclusively built on self-pity, it's built on any willful pursuit of suffering in the name of self-righteousness. That's Ohana. Ohana constantly takes on burdens and denies herself things she wants in the name of that labor itself being a virtue, and she as well projects this onto other people as an assessment of their character. Ohana quite literally believes hard work is its own reward. She's fucking nuts man, the show just doesn't quite understand that.
>>274822589Wagies in the countryside at a traditional Inn, it was comfy.
Can anyone tell me what happened in the sequel Novel for Hanasaku Iroha?I know Tari Tari's sequel novel was kind of grim with Chinatsu becoming a single mom and Sawa's horse dying.
>>274825518Ohana is not seeking out suffering and she doesn't think of herself as a martyr no matter how you try to twist it. She's just passionate about her work and has a can-do attitude.
>>274815011I agree that Nako is more resilient than Ohana but she's a sub too.

>>274818304But the business wasn't failing. It was stable and doing fine. The key issue was legacy customers dying. But there could've been ways around that. By selling up as that sector decreases. It has everything it needs to be successful. It's just a matter of putting the pieces together right.

Drama = character faces a dilemma or event and most story events are related to understanding, solving or progressing that dilemma (or a couple of central dilemmas)Slice of Life = consists largely of daily life and a lot of "unnecessary" detail that's there for its own sake, and doesn't relate to a central dilemma or plotIyashikei = slice of life that is as pleasant as possible, can have light drama and relatable themes that resolve easily.Just started rewatching Hanasaku Iroha yesterday, already forgot what it was like but I remember the characters had some big drama running deep.In general PA Works shows tend to have big themes and drama, but also a lot of slice of life detail in a way where they aren't speedrunning the main plot.
>>274871181>Iyashikei = slice of life that is as pleasant as possible, can have light drama and relatable themes that resolve easily. That is not at all what iyashikei isIn fact, it doesn't need to be slice of life at all. The drama does not need to be light at all, the problems do not need to be solvable in an easy and quick fashion. Iyashikei is not a genre in a sense of what happens in the story, but rather, it is a mode of storytelling. It's okay to not know words, but it is not okay to pretend that you do and to spread your lack of knowledge.
>>274871257>a mode of storytellingOk, what's that? Some specific story structure? How the events make you personally feel? Try giving a more specific definition.
>>274871327tone, mainly
>>274871327I will list some iyashikei and you will notice a pattern:>Tamayura>Kamichu>Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryokou>Natsume Yuujincho>Mushishi>Umi ga KikoeruA little bitterness is expected from a medicine. It wouldn't work nearly as well, otherwise. If it's just cute girls doing cute things, there's not enough there to soothe a weary mind. It's like putting a band aid on a bullet wound.
>>274870006>2017 Sakura Quest
>>274871661I think you are defining it based on certain type of drama, when most online definitions say it's a subgenre of slice of life. A drama that hits right and personal can be healing but that's still just a good drama. If a big focus of the show is character changing or overcoming something, that's drama content. With drama I mean profound character story, not "drama" as in characters having arguments or the presentation being melodramatic. I can agree that a pure comedy entertainment doesn't count as iyashikei but it doesn't need to have bitterness or some profound realizations either. Where a slice of life comedy might be distracting (like band-aid), iyashikei is grounding. Gochiusa has these light-hearted character dramas that change your mood and help you put things into perspective, but it's not profound enough to call it drama.
>>274872384Sakura Quest was really mediocre. I don't remember almost anything about it except for the episode with Pink Aoi stripping down to her swimsuit to ride that machine...
Towards the end, they bring up how the inn isn't just the grandma's inn anymore (since she and her husband built it up from nothing basically). That's because everyone is so passionate about the inn now, clearly different from everyone's attitude at the start. I thought that was really interesting. In the end though, it seems grandma wanted to close the inn on her own terms. She saw everyone spreading themselves too thin in that last-ditch effort to keep the inn going and it leads to a reduction in customer service. I totally understand how grandma didn't want the inn to lose the two defining things of her inn, namely meticulous customer service and a relaxed atmosphere (this couldn't be maintained with everyone running around like a headless chicken). I think it was her good right to call it quits, even though it was against the wishes of everyone else.
>>274873762I would say it was better than mediocore but I watched it only once. Don’t know if I care enough to rewatch it.
>>274869185>directed by Quentin Tarantino
This one and tari tari or whatever that singing show was called really felt comfy to me
>>274876414Trantino can only dream of reaching a directing this godly
I remember rooting for the cook guy as the ideal husbando for Ohana
>>274869814>>274871181Yes yes I too enjoy claiming that fluid "genre" definitions are absolute, it's my hobby online
>>274872478>most online definitions say it's a subgenre of slice of lifeand most online definitions are wrong because people on the internet don't know shit, especially westerners talking about a japanese media trend from the mid 90s.
>>274880032How do you win against this creatura
>>274880032Best character in the show.
Nano R.I.P my ears

>>274880305
>>274880205You don't, just accept it
>>274871661>>274872478I agree more with the first anon. Iyashikei is more about the serene atmosphere. It's questionable if something like Natsume Yuujinchou can be classified as slice of life but there's no way in hell it isn't iyashikei. Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou, the quintessential iyashikei, is all about characters changing.
>>274881434>wait, this isn't herons
>>274884737holy moly
>>274885311sniiiiiiiiiiiffffffffffff
>>274871181Iyashikei in the most literal sense just means "healing". That typically means slow-paced and comforting, but it also implies there's something painfully recognizable between the lines the viewer needs to be healed from.HanaIro has the hurting part down (doubly so if you're past the age where a stint at a picturesque ryoukan would be enough to put your life back on track), but it doesn't do enough healing to qualify as medicine. The girls had fun and learned a lot, but the world is still unfair and the inn still has to shut down.>>274871661>A little bitterness is expected from a medicine. That sums it up better than I could have, so I don't know why I still submitted this post.
Ohana's a strong girl
>>274887241FOR MEBut seriously, I want her to plap my cheeks like that

>>274891433I can never look at this image without thinking of THAT edit
>>274813033The only domme you're getting from that inn is the granny.
>>274866491We literally see this anti-romance, anti-man sentiment from anime characters themselves (pic related). If an anime fan says he hates romance, what he actually means is that he hates heterosexuality and men in general.
>>274813033>this should be fun to watchAre you watching from The Chair too?
>>274892492Why would you tie your entire masculinity into some slop that's shat out for Japanese kids I would breed Kobeni though

How many kids would Ohana and Kou-chan have by now

>>274895170>Kou-chanWho?
>>274808343My favorite P.A. Works anime. And Ohana is the only good self-insert Okada has ever written.
>>274897313That's because her mom is the self-insert iirc
>>274895437>Ohana peeking into my room and peparing to again clean up the gallons of ossan cum I shot out thinking about her
>>274897448No, Ohana's mom is based on Okada's own mom. That's strong support for the idea that Ohana is the self-insert.
>>274898315I might be remembering this ass up but I was certain I read an interview the granny was her mom and Okada was Satsuki, and that's why she got so much lead time and even her own movieCan't be assed to double check though
>>274898708You remembered wrong. In that interview, she said Satsuki is based on her own mom.
>>274899147In that case it's hilarious she made Satsuki more in-depth character than her own proxy, but I was really hoping you'd dig up the interview from somewhere and verify, because otherwise it's just spit balling. I might even actually read it once I wake up.
>>274899186Not from an interview but from her autobiographyhttps://www.animenewsnetwork.com/feature/2017-09-06/how-mari-okada-went-from-shut-in-to-anime-director/.120417>By then, Okada was in her thirties, and at last she felt that she could understand her mother's feelings. So she decided to write her mother into Hana-Saku Iroha.>In the anime, Ohana's mother is a selfish and irresponsible woman. But Okada was sympathetic toward her, understanding that her own mother wished she could have been a free spirit yet felt constrained by her responsibilities.
>>274808343The melodrama completely drowns out any kind of comfy or feel good the series could've had.
>>274810269>>274810389>>274810419>There may be in a few years, but there wasn't during the period the series took place in.Lol hell no. It's actually a big problem here right now, as all the Ryokan owner operator families are dying off, the you ger generations don't want to take over because the customers are also becoming less. There are towns such as Naruko Onsen in Miyagi Prefecture that will 100% disappear in the next 10-20 years, whereas just 20 years ago they were absolutely bustling. Getting into the traditional Ryokan business these days is just asking to lose it all. It's actually so bad these days, that many of the larger ryokans now have almost completely non Japanese staff lmfao. Even the big spots like Ginzan now employee non Japanese at their "traditional Japanese Ryokan." The Japan you watch in anime has been dead for about a decade and a half.
>>274900164Maybe the industry will slim down but I highly doubt it's going to completely die off because when you think about it, it's just a fancy hotel/spa resort and there will always be a customer base for that, even if it is entirely a bunch of gaijin going for the authentic Japan hotel folded 1000 times experience.
>>274887951Pointing to her two flower hairpins because her name is Ohana
>>274809714Nako is a teen with mommy energy. Ohana has "liable to become a teen mom" energy. Note the difference.
Will Minchi be forever alone though? What would being married to her be like?
>>274900164>as all the Ryokan owner operator families are dying off, the you ger generations don't want to take overno, this is just rural flight, an issue Japan has been having for the past hundred or so

>>274826426>>274825518>>274824932>>274823088You're both wrong to some degree. Ohana works hard at first to try to get back at all the people against her and prove them wrong. She's basically trying to show that she won't give in, no matter what hardship is thrown at her. But soon after she begins working hard because she feels like it gives her meaning and a place to belong. Basically, it all stems from having abandonment issues as well as being tossed into a precarious situation by her slut of a mom.
