Same thing with the contract, as the child playing with their toys, you can make up any setting or backstory to the toys you play with. Why the fruit is called the Hobby Hobby is arguably the bigger issue, since the other powers are at least somewhat connected.

I think I realized another reason why I don't like Punk Hazard and Dressrosa after reading this chapter. The Smile artificial fruits. Because despite being built up for so long and SAD/Smiles being a central part of Punk Hazard, this arc, and Doflamingo's relationship with Kaido, they're in the end completely underwhelming and pointless. These two arcs make a way bigger deal about them than they ever end up being. The artificial fruits are basically worthless and just flat out aren't important.

They don't get individually huge displays but the volume of them does change the tides of combat, they were each proficient enough fighters to be in a class all their own within Kaido's ranks. Their side effects are also used to demonstrate the lengths of evil Kaido and Orochi have gone with Wano's own people. SMILEs also do legwork for the direction of future developments with science/lost science as a major factor and the connections between bloodline elements and Devil Fruit powers that can be reverse engineered; since Sabaody we've been getting much much more scientific weaponry and an armada of zoan users, even when they're played for goofs, is no slouch.
