I'm not gonna lie i bought my first volume of Ubel Blatt when i was in middle school and the sex really hooked me up at that time. The author knew how to get horny boys to read his manga, but i remember that not only the ecchi but the action and gore was really good too. Also Koinzell chara-design is nice, i like it. To see such an hidden classic having an anime adaptation was surprising but judging from the first ep i wish they never made one.

I like Shiono Etoruiji's works, despite their flaws. Ubel Blatt really is just Berserk: Poorly Disguised Fetish Edition, even having the demon cheek clapping in the first chapter, but I think it holds its own. It suffers from pacing issues from the 1/3 to 2/3 mark, but I think the end was decent. Also apparently there's a sequel manga.

Animation is surprisingly ok, the effects are CG but the combat itself isn't. The OST is decent. And the OP and ED choice being just generic shounen electronic J-pop (instead of using a medieval instrument or two) suggests they don't care that much about the aesthetic beyond "muh edgy revenge". If this studio wanted to produce an edgy show, they should have adapted Revenge Classroom. It would be better than being stuck with a tone deaf adaptation that scares off any alternative adaptations, like what happened with Youjo Senki or Otherside Picnic. Leave the good edgy stories like Rebuild World for more talented studios.

Shoulda done Bloomed in Action or Brocken Blood instead. Zelphy would fit right in with early 2000s sci-fi slop, alongside shit like STRAIN.

It was quickly digestible straightforward bad-army/good-hero story that required minimum context to follow while it gradually introduced the plot twist of who Koinzell is and what he would spend the rest of the story on. The story SLOWS DOWN after that as the cast balloons and shit gets more complicated. Volume 0 was the ideal intro to get people hooked.
