What went so wrong?

Why would anyone not just read the VN
>>
>>275116385
Umineko can only exist in the VN medium, this was a bad idea from the start. It has too many layers and it's mostly people talking
Battles aren't even really introduced until almost halfway through the story
>>275116414
I like VNs but they aren't for everyone, lots of people don't want to invest 100 hours into a book with anime traits but with moving pictures.

I really don't get the love people have for the Umineko console shit.
Sprites look like generic TV anime of the time, and the CGs are just bland in composition. Like 90% of them are the exact same shit, just with the character and background switched out.
>>
>>275117099
If that's all then yeah. You might have more fun trying to reason out the mysteries of each episode that way.

It's a good mystery, that's about it. I skipped most of the magic slop fights, had a laugh at the absurdity of some of the scenes, got bored as fuck during the answer arcs, and hated the shitty pretentious ending. At least it felt good knowing I solved it

>>
>>275116522
It can exist in anime medium, but it has to be a passion project with the budget to not get canceled.
Talking shows exist, Umineko would still be slightly more exciting than Monster for example, even the recent Pluto offscreened nearly all of the action, it was a mystery talking and walking show. Those exist, and Umineko has more colorful characters and engaging mysteries and drama than those, we constantly get killed characters and tons of screaming and trying to figure out what's going on.

But I wouldn't want to be the guy adapting the script. Visual Novels are like an anime without the animation. The raw talking time, the original scenes with voice acting, it's all already there. How do you decide which of those conversations is worthy enough to get in? At one point of hearing Battler and Beatrice discuss, you decide
>nah, we can cut this explanation / these insults, they're not key
?
Kind of a hard task. When it was written and published, all of it was meant to be important.
But again it has to be funded well enough to not fail.
>1 = 9 episodes
>2 = 12 episodes (cut most of the Shannon crap please)
>3 = 16 episodes
>4 = use the remaining 8 episodes of the season after 3 ends to tell Ange and Maria flashbacks, and start the proper Episode but it would be unfinished in the same season, it gets an additional 12 episodes the next season. 20 total.

I don't remember enough of the length for 5, 6, 7 and 8 , but the studios mustn't be afraid to use odd numbers and just end the season in a cliffhanger.
>>
>>275117445
>generic TV anime of the time
I'm not even discussing if this is true or not, but that's an aesthetic that makes me so nostalgic. It's understandable if people enjoy it. Anime was just drawn differently back then.
Personally I love them, I love the distinct "visual novel aesthetic", same with Fate Stay Night.
>>
>>275118628
>How do you decide which of those conversations is worthy enough to get in?
>2
>cut most of the Shannon crap please
But you just decided to cut an important moment
>>
>>275118628
The ideal way to adapt VNs is as films.
Higurashi and Umineko should've been adapted that way. 90-120 minute long films covering each arc.
>>
>>275118869
Sorry my urges pulled through. I'll make an exception, there are some moments in Umineko which totally got their point across already and they just keep going and going without an end.
Mostly when Shannon or Beatrice get philosophical, those can be shortened and you wouldn't miss the point.
>Shannon believes in love, Beatrice doesn't, Kanon says something about being furniture
You can shave off a lot of dialogue just getting those points across.

It does get hard with the actual logical battles. One of my favorites is the trial with EVA in Episode 3, and the YouTube video is 1 hour long of nonstop talking and plot twists, all cool scenes. But you won't be dedicating 3 or 4 episodes to this, it has to be 2 at most.
Or scenes that move the plot along, such as the family members running and hiding in the house, discussing what happened and their plan of action, properly mourning the deaths. This all adds a lot of plot time

The Shannon parts are literally the most important part of EP2 for obvious reasons. If you're looking to cut stuff, the most obvious parts are the dragged out opening act of EP1 and the Maria/Ange flashbacks in EP4 (Rosa is a big meanie. We get it. You've been going on about that since EP1. It still doesn't make Maria's constant screeching autistic meltdowns any more acceptable, nor is it interesting to read about her gaslighting Ange into turning herself into a fellow autistic outcast). Also, while it may be controversial to say it, the humans escaping/fighting Beatrice's furniture in EP4 can be almost entirely cut without any major impact on the plot, as it's all complete fiction that doesn't add anything relevant other than showing the secret tunnels.
>>
You can't really expect adaptations to appease everyone or meet the minimum quality
>>
>>275118628
>the main character is annoying, so cut her scenes
>>
>>275116385
Satoko
>>
>>275118282
Some were funny, like the goat death flag/loser flag one, but most of them are boring and repetitive and I knew that they're were just bullshit to cover the real murders.
>"Oh look a this epic battle!!! Looks like Jessica took quite a beating, managed to barely dodge a laser and is bleeding all over!!"
>"Oh no she was eaten by a demon from hell and became a pile of gore!!"
>"I'll just conveniently revive her and stab her in the heart with this stake so it looks like she died in one shot lmao!"
>>
>>275119345
It is controversial, screw that. I am already angry at the old anime for cutting it, especially Krauss punch.
Also the matter of fiction or reality isn't entirely clear, and it's meant to be the uplifting climax of Ep 4 in which you think things might go right. After many episodes dying without a clue, we see the Ushiromiya confronted vs Magic and they seem to be coming out on top, it's like Higurashi's Minagoroshi forest scene
>>
>>275119345
No they aren't. The intro of EP2 is just filler that isn't even canon.
>>
>>275119345
You guys don't really like umineko if you don't like the chuuni shit
Also Maria is a great representation of autism in kids and fuck you for complaining
>>
>>275119612
The Ep2 intro all happened, but Sayo tells it out of order
>>
>>275119612
There is no such thing as filler in umineko because there doesn't need to be. It's a visual novel not a constantly running anime
Most scenes are there for a reason, Ryuu wouldn't of spent 1/4 of episode 2 (already the most disliked episode in the questions arc because of the sudden introduction of magical elements with no explanation) just to write something that serves no purpose
>>
>>275119606
>I am already angry at the old anime for cutting it, especially Krauss punch.
It's funny when you first read it, but as >>275119597 says, it's just a bunch of out of place filler in retrospect. The idea of them already beating Beatrice and surviving before the answer arcs even started was obvious nonsense if you stopped and thought for a moment rather than being carried away by the cheap hype.
>the matter of fiction or reality isn't entirely clear
If Battler didn't see it, it's fiction, and only matters if it's a metaphor for the events of a murder or a character's motives.

>>
>>275119898
They're still the best bit of characterization those secondary characters get though.
Jessica and George wouldn't be as cool if we didn't see them being martial arts masters, ditto for Krauss who was just a clumsy businessman and somewhat of a condescending asshole up to that point but we get to see him throw hands doing boxing in college.
>>
>>275120217
Jessica's best moment is roasting the real killer alive.
>>
>>275120217
They don't need to be cool. Jessica and George were just the people who Sayo was cheating on Battler with (actually, Kanon is entirely superfluous as a character, especially since his creation wasn't even tied to Sayo learning that she was originally a guy), and Krauss was just a guy who was part of the conspiracy to hide Kinzo's death. Ryukishi's self-indulgent writing where he has to make everything a shounen fight with forced otaku culture references that age like milk is one of his greatest weaknesses as a writer. Also, EP2 and EP5 were sufficient for characterizing Jessica/George and Krauss.
>>
>>275120530
>she was originally a guy
I never understood why people reached this conclusion. The novel puts a fuckton of emphasis on the female characters, Kanon gets owned during that one duel and Shannon wins, and I figured that "being furniture" meant being unable to have children and make a family, which I figured meant that Sayo was an infertile female. Also the manga even has a scene about Nanjo and Kinzo talking about Sayo's injure and they mention something about "lacerations in the lower abdomen" so I figured that meant the injury affected her womb somehow. Did I interpret this shit all wrong and that one part of the manga isn't canon? Did r07 confirm Sayo was a male? I'm aware about the whole thing in one of the episodes of the child Natsuhi tried killing being a male, but I assumed it was Battler on the phone or the witches interfering.
>>
>>275121073
It could go both ways, but male is more likely. Genji decided to put her in a orphanage after the accident, possibly because he feared Kinzo would rape her again now that she would have to be raised as female. There's also the fact that Lion looks more male than female. And the whole gender duality with Kanon and Shannon doesn't make as much sense if we're talking about a damaged womb.
>>
>>275121073
Ryukishi says that Sayo can't have sex in an interview. That's closer to having your cock lopped off than serious damage to the vagina. Also, Kanon loses because Sayo barely cared about Jessica at all.
>>
>>275121073
The VN doesn't give any reasons to think Sayo is a guy but I'm pretty sure the manga outright says it and she's implied to be a man without functioning genitals
>>
>>275121202
>Genji decided to put her in a orphanage after the accident, possibly because he feared Kinzo would rape her again now that she would have to be raised as female
Makes more sense to me if Sayo was originally a female
>There's also the fact that Lion looks more male than female
Fair.
>And the whole gender duality with Kanon and Shannon doesn't make as much sense if we're talking about a damaged womb
I guess. Does having damaged ovaries affect female puberty? If so, could explain about Sayo feeling insecure about that if she never ended up having periods, or growing tits or growing a feminine figure, but at the same time, she doesn't have a penis and didn't grow manlier, hence Shannon being her female ideal and Kanon the male ideal. But that could work if Sayo lost hers penis too, that's why the location of the injury is important and the manga gives us that info

But Lion's origin is still interesting, even if you think she was born a female (which is also a completely acceptable theory)

An Umineko fan is ready to lose his virginity with his girlfriend. They undress each other and close the lights. The girl tries her hardest to find the penis of the virgin man but because of its very small dimensions she has trouble doing so. She asks him nicely "Where is it? Where is your penis?" to which the Umineko fan smugly replies "Without love it can't be seen!"

Also the biggest issue with these killers is that they don't make sense. Why would okonogi create the illusion of the witch by creating closed rooms, signs, charms, etc. and it goes against all the themes the VN is trying to portray and what the culprit was trying to say overall
You probably can successfully make reaches so big you end up blaming any of the 17 for the crime, doesn't make them correct solutions

As much as I like the manga, Umineko really only works as a VN, it was literally designed for that medium and cannot be replicated anywhere else. To this day the rugpull remains the best filter for people who never understood what Umineko was about. Ryu designed a whole character to mock retards like you who care more about the mystery than the story and you still couldn't get it through your thick heads that the mystery was never important. The entire point of Umineko, since episode 1, has been that the mystery is irrelevant and completely subjective and focusing on the mystery over the story of the characters being told is mindless goat-brained behavior.

The anime is utterly doomed, because Umineko requires a LOT of buy in to get through the initial hurdles of the clunky writing in order to interface with it in a completely unique way to any other game, novel, manga, anime, or VN. I think that's what makes it so good, but I can understand it won't catch on, since there are so many hurdles CONCEPTUALLY on top of the WRITING ERRORS that happen as well.

Umineko is a game first and foremost between the player, the fandom, the author, and the VN all in separate ways to find TRUTH. Not THE truth, but truthness. It's very unique for what it is, but it's just too outlandish for a concept. If R07 had made a few more games using the RED TRUTH as a concept, maybe it would have gotten more draw as a concept, but right now, it's just a sincere, awkward one-off.

I've thought about this too. It only works as a text you read with very little in the way of imagery to keep information very direct between what's read from the author's word to the reader's internalization. Art just muddles it all. And it can't be a book because the way the VN stages characters to make it coherent who is talking or not talking is necessary to keep the text coherent.

R07 can be argued to handle a lot of elements in Umineko clunky, but the characterization and character depth has never been in dispute, well, with one exception.

Maria is meant to create a mysticism and sincerity to turn people onto the fantasy of Umineko from a point of view that is pure, rationed, and desperate. It could only come from her, and that might be a magic in itself.

Although I still like Maria abuse memes
>>
>>275144160
It truly is a shame that she had to take such a tough role in the beginning of the game to set into motion the sale of fantasy into Umineko and had to take a brunt of backlash from viewers before they could properly acclimate. Makes it tragic, not only in her personal story, but also in a sense as an actor.

However, the story is about never stop thinking, so once you reach a conclusion you have to take it to court and constantly come up with new theories and evidence.

Except he never said this, retards on here said this. The games were never about how the crime was committed or who did it, it was always about the subjectivity of truth and understanding the motive. People online hyper fixated on the mystery instead of the themes of the story which are directly opposed to each other, hence why R07 mocked you for missing the point.
>>275145810
>He doesn't know either
The entire story was outlined since episode 1 and if you actually go back and re-read it the foreshadowing is beyond obvious. He didn't asspull anything, re-read the question arcs, there are several times where characters flat out guess correctly as to the nature of the crimes. It's a completely different story the 2nd time around. As for the manga, he included that because people like you who were too retarded to understand the point of the story were still asking "Hurrr but how did it happen" so he spelled it out to shut ya'll up and throw you a bone. You people are like the retards who get upset over the Sopranos ending. People like you are why we get so much lowest common denominator MCU-tier baby handholding trash in media.

This, I don't think anyone can realistically solve the entire mystery by ep 2. Especially since a lot of key points are only shown in ep 3 and 4. AT BEST I know someone who guessed the culprit by ep 2, but that was a complete guess and even then knowing the culprit is just the tip of the pyramid.

>The games were never about how the crime was committed or who did it, it was always about the subjectivity of truth and understanding the motive
Except this only came into play in the answers arc. No one who reads episodes 1-4 gets this. Specially if you came from higurashi since that one is just a mystery that tries to get you to solve it without looking down on you.
You're just describing something he put in later to make his work seem deeper. There's nothing about episodes 1-4 that should make you think "noo i shouldn't think about the closed rooms or murders like in higurashi being presented to me, I should be questioning the killer who I barely have information on right now"

Not any of the other anons, but I had a hunch that Shannon was the culprit in EP2 simply because of how much it focused on her and portraying her as a pitiable victim, and knowing how Japanese works love their twists where girls like that are revealed to secretly be evil. The instant that Kumasawa and Genji were revealed to be Beatrice's magical accomplices in EP3, I understood that it meant that Beatrice was quite literally Shannon.

The point of Maria and Rosa's part in episode 4 was exploring the dissonance between the truth as seen from a well illustrated conjecture versus the truth of someone who puts faith in the characters as established. it's meant to teach the player, (you), to stick to your guns and not let some errant, but well put fashioned fanfiction about, let's say, how George could have been a bank robber, but it was off the island so it hasn't been said yet, be put into the calculus for being a part of your theory crafting. Learn as much as you can and reason out as much as possible, but don't get distracted into chasing after illusions as proof of anything.
>>
>>275149476
And I like the idea and a lot of the scenes from that section, it's just he could've done it just as effectively in 1/4 of the time

In conclusion, anything that is being presented about what happens off the island in a flashback is not reliable as evidence. Rosa isn't a slut who starves Maria, because Battler wasn't there to see it. What we know is what happened on the island. We can listen and think about it, but it's not proof, just proof adjacent.

Literally EVERYTHING in Umineko can be done with at least half the amount of words, but that's neither here nor there.

The family was doomed either way. Half of them would probably end up killing themselves in the face of complete financial ruin. Rudolf even points out that the gold can't save them because it's not realistically possible to liquidate that much phantom gold.

nah, this was just ryu coping and seething because people solved his mystery too soon.
ironically, choosing magic is for brains in jars, choosing trick is for the witches who escaped their illusionary worlds like hinamizawa or rokkenjima.
those who accept "magic" don't seek to get out, they live by emotions, and thus accept the illusion as real and live in this false comfort, while periodically getting slaughtered and are as stuck in it as rika was, while those who choose trick don't let emotions control them, they look past the comfortable illusion of imaginary happiness to see harsh reality, learn to live with it, accept it, eventually try to control it, becoming masters of their lives, like bernkastel or lambda.

I'm reading this now, why so many locked rooms? Surely there are better ways of making a murder mystery than this. Red text thing last chapter was cool thoughbeit.
>>
>>275153579
You shouldn't be on this thread, in fact leave now
But the locked rooms are a way for witches to argue their existence. After all, how could a human create one? You also might want to keep in mind, if the culprit is a human why do they keep making closed rooms? What's the point?
They're fairly common in the mystery genre though

I just recently watched the videos about this theory and it's weirdly compelling. Like, what's the official explanation for the candy trick in Episode 2? Shannon just coincidentally had the exact gimmick candy that they were selling at the train station? And what about the scene in Episode 4, where Beatrice appears before Maria at her home, the only time someone "sees" her outside of Rokkenjima?
>>
>>275151597
Right I hated the school drama with Ange, it just went on forever and she's not an interesting character.

Rosa is the accomplice in 2.
Maria can "see" Beatrice wherever she wants because she's a schizo.

I call it the "two Jessicas" theory. If there be a blonde bitch that can pass for Beato, why not have one that can pass for Jessica as well?
