I think a really underrated aspect of HOTD's longevity is the Rei/Saeko/Takashi love triangle. It was introduced and it was never resolved, leaving us to speculate for all these years about what was going to happen. Who was Takashi going to pick? Were the two girls going to fight? Was there going to be a harem scenario? It's fueled discussion for all these years.

I always liked HSotD as it was airing, but what really won me over was the scene where Saeko confesses to Takahashi that she likes killing and hurting others and that she thinks it makes her a bad person. That kind of character writing is so real, you almost never see it.
