Asuka's main arc in the first half was somehow realizing she wasn't abandoned by her mother so that she could be "fixed" (nice sci-fi storytelling by Anno) and thrive. In my opinion, her dying (but not really dying lel) is more of a plot device to break Shinji's mind than it is to illustrate some sort of failing in Asuka. The statement you should fight to live even I'd irs hopeless also makes sense, but honesrly, that seems much less important than the main themes around human connection and the paradoxical nature of that leading to pain/sorrow/isolation and also giving joy/love/understanding.

It explains and gives depth to the archetypical super hard working tech staff member at the mecha organization. It's brilliant. Ritsuko is a really cool character but if often overshadowed by the other great characters.Gendo represents someone who chooses the opposite of what Shinji did, and shuts his heart out from the world for fear of hurting others and himself. Ultimately that is the path my ex chose and the path so many abused people with BPD choose. It's really sad to think, but it's beautiful to see NGE fight against that, with Shinji triumphing over that fear.
I can't hate what the movies gave me.
