People said Kirito was a Mary sue because they didn’t pay attention to the story and didn’t realise he was out killing monsters by himself all the time because after his first guild’s death he didn’t care if he lived or died. There was also the fact that the rug gets pulled out from under the plot at level 75 and nothing is explained about the game designer.

>>275178923From a cohesive writing standpoint, the first half of S1 is definitely actually the weakest part of SAO. The "main" plot is a romance, and the last 3 weeks of an otherwise off-screen romance, at that. The rest of the time is taken up by side stories and harem building. The other arcs are dumb in their own ways but they're a lot more put-together as proper story arcs. The closest thing to a proper SAO (game) arc is Progressive, but Kawahara hasn't written more of that in years.

I think the first 14 episodes are a cool story albeit rushed and with some logic issues. I wish they just stretched out the Sword Art Online arc. After they win the game it gets lame and boring.
