In the novel and manga, the story with her stepfather is real, and she ultimately saw Satou as someone more pathetic than her. Thus, she wanted him to depend on her. She wasn't actually helping him out of the kindness of her heart. Somehow, this flies over people's heads because she's the cute girl and "gosh, it'd be so nice if the cute girl knocked on my door"

I will add that characters, especially villains who are about to be killed get a save by the author pulling some stupid ass shit just so they can bring them back into the story later. Something like

It's all so eye rolling, the idea that you always have to have pure intentions at all times is beyond ridiculous. If you're in trouble and someone pulls you out, you're not gonna care about anything except that they helped you. The action is all that matters, intentions aren't worth shit.

With Misaki's case it's a little more murky because her actions were also to try make him depend on her, but the idea that "She's bad, because impure intentions" is stupid and I hate seeing anime constantly rehash that concept.

The MC ranks up at a fairly regular rate, but the way the series is setup, each rank feels like an enormous difference both in power and in status. Even just going from Lv1 -> Lv2 immediately changes how the world perceives him.
