Part of the reason why DBS feels a bit “soulless” to me is that Earth’s presentation feels weaker than in Dragon Ball and DBZ.With Dragon Ball, we got an organic blend of western and every facet of Asian cultures, not strictly Japanese, with heavy leaning towards Chinese and Southeast Asian cultures, as well as a few Indian and Central Asian influences. In Dragon Ball Z, it doesn’t feel quite as varied, but the series leans more into Western cultures, the Z-fighters and other character are seen wearing Western-style clothes, characters like Mr. Satan saying English words in the Japanese dub, and a lot of the signs and lettering on outfits are in English.In Dragon Ball Super, however… Earth’s culture is dangerously monotone. While rewatching the show, I remembered that Whis was only given Japanese food, and Bulma was exclusively taking him to Japanese restaurants, and the one food items that convinces Whis to train Vegeta is instant ramen. I noticed this is a common issue with modern-day manga and anime, they’re all hyper focused on Japan and use it as a reference when “world building”, and it’s disappointing that a series with a global presence like Dragon Ball has fallen to such a trap.
If it wasn’t for the hard-baked Chinese aspects of all the main characters, they’d be explicitly japanese as well.

Because it IS soulless. It's the single most soulless Dragon Ball product. You have parts in the manga that straight up tells you to buy [x] thing to see what happens during gaps, something never done before. The anime itself is a massive fucking shitshow, more than 100 episodes and only about 10 are watchable. Character assassination out the fucking ass. Reused fighting concepts that the characters forgot they knew about in OG/Z and even in previous Super arcs. New forms that are literal recolors and nothing more since the whole God ki concept ends up just not mattering anymore. Daima and Super are both ass DB products but holy hell, no matter what /dbs/ (the Super fanboys) says, Daima is just plain better than Super.
