I've got nothing better to do, so I'm dumping the first chapter of Shun Matsuena's (History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi, Kimi Wa 008) new series, "Sora e..." ("To the surface" - "sora" means sky, but it's written with the kanji for "aboveground").>Premise: There exists a group superpowered beings called "Overmen", who live underground in order to protect our world. One of these Overmen makes his way to the surface, hoping to be able to live a "normal life" here...
We begin as a boy is entrusted with a notebook by a dying man. He tells the boy that it contains information on how to find a job and gain residency, and tells him to go in his place... A woman tells the boy to not bother with the dead — their mission is to protect the "surface".
The boy declares that he won't allow the monster reach the surface.
Elsewhere, a shocked prime minister of Japan watches the spectacle on a screen. The scientist tells him that this is the country's greatest secret.

The world is teetering on the brink of destruction.
We must do whatever we can to delay that destruction, without any scruples. The people fighting the monsters are superpowered individuals called "Overmen".

They're raised underground in a special facility called "Yochien" (TL note: Youchien means kindergarten). Their only purpose in life is to battle the monsters in order to push buck the end of the world.
The prime minister sees that these are mere children, and is angry that their human rights are being trampled upon.
The scientist asks: What use are human rights once the world has been destroyed?
Shady nazi man tells her to take it easy, since it's the prime minister's first day on the job. But suddenly, a siren starts blaring.
Looks like one of the Overmen has escaped. Oops!
What a crisis!
And here's the Overman in question: Hiiro. He came to the surface because of his friend's dying wish. He has with him a book of information about the surface that his friend had compiled.
He doesn't really get all of it, but the first thing to do seems to be "finding a job". Oh well, can't be to different from the underground — he just has to find someone who recognises his strenght, right?
He finds a job interview, tells them he has no surname, and that he has been employed fighting monsters underground until now. That should do it!
Security escorts him outside. He kindly asks them to let go.
He's surprised to find that they're weak enough to faint from a little shaking. He decides to make his escape before he attracts too much attention.
The rest of his job-hunting doesn't go any better.
Three weeks later... Despite his strength, he's been unable to find a job.
His vitals are starting to deteriorate, and he considers taking food by force as an emergency measure, but accidentally breaks the bench he's sitting on.
He realizes that this world is much more weak and brittle than he was expecting. He could wreck it in an instant if he starts going wild. He doesn't want to do that, that would ruin his friend's dream.
Overmen generally die within 20 years of being created. They don't think about anything except efficiency — Except for one person...
Hiiro's friend, Shion, dreamed of living on the surface. He was always researching it by capturing transmissions from aboveground.
Once, he showed Hiiro a toy hammer. It's just a toy, not really practical for anything, but the fact that the surface was full of all these different things fascinated Shion.
Hiiro didn't really get it, though, he just nodded his head at Shion's stories. Then, one day...

Hiiro still fails to see the appeal as he's starving to death on the surface. In the end, he didn't understand the surface world at all...
And then a girl offers him a hamburger.

Hiiro thinks she's different from the rest of the surface dwellers... A weirdo, in other words. She has to leave, but she came back the next day, too.
Wow, it really is better with the wrapping off! She says that she eats at this park every day before cram school.
Second year of middle school is when the entrance exam wars start, after all... The word "war" catches Hiiro's attention. She tells him that she's going to cram school because her mom told her to (he has some misunderstandings about the scenario). Everyday she has to stuff her head full of unnecessary stuff against her will.
Hiiro deduces that she's being brainwashed. She says that it can't be helped, she'll just have to push herself... He tells her she's going to die.

But she decides that continuing to strain herself like this without saying anything won't do her any good. She'll talk to her mom about it.
He's still having no luck finding a job.

She comes back and is really happy, because after talking to her mom she agreed to let her take things a little easier! What a nice dictator, says Hiiro. She should use her newfound free time to recover her strength and increase her chances of survival.
