Alright, it is Wednesday and I am gonna post the thirty-second volume of Inuyasha. Feel free to react or comment on any panel, though I appreciate if image replies are not used during the dump. Feel free to discuss anything Inuyasha related after the dump.

Previous thread: >>275078648

Despite the OP image, I am using the VizBig 3-in-1 localization which does not feature this cover exactly. Be aware that some of the larger images have been edited to be lower quality due to image size limits.

In addition, I will be dumping the one short story from the Rumic World and Rumic Theatre series that came out around this time. Today, the scans I have of the one shot are fanscans. Today, that will be "Help".
>>
Here's the inner illustration for Volume 31 in the 3-in-1.
>>
This chapter's cover was originally in full color. But only the cover.

April 16th, 2003. Author's note:
"Q: What is something that you always wanted but never got?
A: A long vacation."
>>
>>275208702
We last left off with Kagome at the waterfall basin.
>>
>>275208702
>"Q: What is something that you always wanted but never got?
>A: A long vacation."
dw past-rumiko! you'll get one after inuyasha finishes and then an even longer one after rinne!
>>
>>275208761
We saw this part, but now we know what happened after. Urasue's handiwork continues to outlive her.
>>
>>275208813
You decide.

>>275208787
I'm kind of excited for Rinne. Not that I don't like Inuyasha. Those threads are going to be so dead though. I expect all of them to die before 24 hours, like our last thread.
>>
>>275208887
Off she goes.
>>
>>275208933
Now her uniform is soaked.
>>
>>275208955
Would be cool to see how a page like this is screentoned. I don't actually know much about how it works. I assume they had to cut those ripple lines and the shapes of the miasma in the water.

Also, I think this is poison (shoki) rather than evil (jaki) but for some reason, Furinkan stopped mentioning which one it is.
>>
>>275209061
I assume a reference for ink in water was used here. It is cool the way it flows.
>>
>>275209109
Furinkan gives a sound effect note regarding this page: "The onomatopoeia that is shown when Kagome is touching the sparkling grave soil is "sara sara" (サラサラ) is the sound of something flowing smoothly."

I guess trickle is close enough.
>>
>>275209151
Not that easy.
>>
>>275209192
>>
>>275209215
Humans need the kind of air that water does not have.
>>
>>275209238
They're up.
>>
>>275209269
Hm...
>>
>>275209294
A simple answer. I consider it to be a pretty natural response.
>>
>>275209320
Furinkan notes that: "When Kikyo refuses to thank Kagome, Kagome thinks "本当に素直じゃないんだから。。。", "aren't you frank?""

VIZ went with sarcasm. It works for me, both convey the same thing even if they're sort of opposite.
>>
>>275209349
Back to wandering, I guess. Sorry, Inuyasha.
>>
>>275209378
End of chapter. Kagome's jealousy didn't even make a blip.
>>
Original title is 苛立つ心. It seems to more directly translate to 'irritated heart'.

April 23rd, 2003. Author's note:
"Q: What is something you wanted to say when waking up?
A: It's okay because it's noisy."
>>
>>275209523
Furinkan again notes that: "The English translation variously calls Kikyo's creatures, the shinidamachu, "soul skimmers" or "soul collectors" but the kanji in their name translates as "dead soul insects"."

I feel VIZ has been alternating terms for these because at some point, they switched to anime terms. I like "soul skimmers", personally since it reminds me of bugs (apparently, it usually refers to dragonflies) while "soul collectors" doesn't.

I thought there was another localization for these that Inuyasha fans use, but I can't remember it.
>>
>>275209612
Taking it a bit to heart.
>>
>>275209640
Furinkan notes that: "The onomatopoeia Kagome makes while she is sitting by the waterfall grousing about Kikyo is "muka" (むか). This is the sound of grumbling or being angry. When placed together "mukamuka" (むかむか) it can be a queasiness."

I dunno why they added that last bit. Anyway, "grr" works fine, though it is a bit silly. I think I prefer "grumble" or even "grmbl" if space is a concern.
>>
>>275209696
Kikyo described him as arriving "chasing after you", as in Kagome. Kagome doesn't seem to agree at the moment, given her sour mood.
>>
>>275209612
>I like "soul skimmers"
i also like it
it sounds cool + more unique
>>
>>275209730
Furinkan notes that: "One of the interesting things about the way you can make onomatopoeia into a verb is shown in this chapter. When Inuyasha arrives after Kagome is grumbling she asks him if he is going to go look for Kikyo. However she uses the onomatopoeia "kyoro kyoro" (キョロキョロ/to look around) plus the conjugated "to do" verb (している)."

I guess in English, you could try to convey it by saying "go looky-looky" or some nonsense like that, but this is why I am not a localizer. I assume this is another way in which Kagome is portrayed as being a bit petulant, but you don't want to localize it such that she sounds like an actual toddler.
>>
>>275209809
...
>>
>>275209828
Oh, they even gave a flashback to the line I repeated.
>>
>>275209844
Furinkan notes that: "Another interesting onomatopoeia in this chapter is Kagome's angry glare at Inuyasha. The typical onomatopoeia for "stare" is "ji" (じ). However the sound Kagome makes is "jiro" (じろ). This means "hard stare" or "glare"."

I assume this is the "hsss". More like a tea kettle than a snake, perhaps.
>>
>>275209880
Not fair.
>>
>>275209892
There's some weight to this question. Of course, we don't really get to know.
>>
>>275209939
She recognizes it pretty much immediately.
>>
Kagura owes me sex.
>>
>>275209970
Golem is usually the term used for Naraku's puppets (Japanese term for them is 傀儡/kugutsu, which translates to puppet). The hijiri was made from a small paper doll (a 人形/hitogata, per Japanese). Furinkan refers to it as a shikigami (式神). I don't know which term was used here.

Also, notice that after a volume of it being called "Hijiri" it is now "The Hijiri" (a bit more accurate since it is a title rather than a name). I don't know why they changed it.
>>
>>275210109
Sigh...

>>275210049
Mukotsu, you've been dead for ages.
>>
>>275210109
>I don't know which term was used here.
you don't have the og jp volumes/access to the raws?
>>
>>275210136
He gets it.
>>
>>275210155
Whoops.

>>275210149
I never admittedly looked. It is on nyaa, so I guess I do have it. I can't read or speak Japanese though, so I never felt compelled to check these out myself. We used to have a guy who kindly would check whenever I brought this sort of thing up.

Well, I downloaded it. It is unzipping. I don't know how organized this is.
>>
>>275210251
She's over him.

End of chapter. A castle...?

>>275210413
This bit of marginalia was also in the original Japanese, per Furinkan. I still don't really get the difference between this term and 'waka', but whatever.

>>275210149
>>275210109
Okay, I found the page in the Japanese volume. By using google lens and google translate (deleting bits of text until it translated just what I wanted), it determined that the actual term used was neither puppet nor shikigami. It was "人形" which means "doll".

Also, these scans have the back cover and the inner sleeve illustration (both in color), so I guess I am going to have to start posting those.
>>
>>275210485
Oh, would you look at that?

>>275210478
Yeah, I hadn't heard of it either. I guess I should check it out. I like the art style.
>>
>>275210508
Freckles.
>>
>>275210485
>It was "人形" which means "doll".
naruhodo
>these scans have the back cover and the inner sleeve illustration (both in color), so I guess I am going to have to start posting those.
discovering this 32 volumes in to your storytime dump oof
>>
>>275210551
I do like that he double-checked.

>>275210558
Yeah, it is kind of rough. These aren't exactly perfect collections, since I have messed up with the wideban extras and whatnot. In regards to my UY and other early dumps, I sometimes think how much better they could've been now that I know how to search up Furinkan more easily.

I could just redo these after I catch up. And go forever and ever...
>>
>>275210668
I love panels like that fourth one. I assume it is just the work of an assistant, but they're nice.
>>
>>275210727
I wonder if there's any truth to that first line. Do they actually get less spirit problems?
>>
>>275210835
The girls aren't wrong.
>>
>>275210851
Stifling.
>>
>>275210879
Now that I have the raws, I can check things. And yes, they went to Holy Woman for Hijiri for this specific line. This was how 聖さま was translated back in the original Inuyasha release. I have no idea why they changed it again.
>>
>>275210951
Decisive action.
>>
>>275210970
I wonder if you could eat them and be okay. Though here, it seems like they just bit them in half since the remains are discarded.

Man, me having the raws might end up with me spending way too much time checking every odd turn of phrase. "Female demon" was in fact "女妖怪" or "onnayokai".
>>
>>275211044
One of those dangerous lines.
>>
>>275211053
So lucky.
>>
>>275211084
>>
>>275211044
>Man, me having the raws might end up with me spending way too much time checking every odd turn of phrase.
heh
>>
>>275211102
Saved.
>>
>>275211112
Furinkan notes that: "The woman who adopts the Infant is called simply "noblewoman" (奥方)."

I guess that's what each instance of "m'lady" is.

>>275210835
I don't know why, but Furinkan just decided to remark about this page: "In the background of a panel the behatted villager stares curiously at Inuyasha, Shippo and Kagome, no doubt puzzled about seeing demons in town and a young girl dressed so strangely."

>>275210835
Also, Furinkan notes that: "When Miroku asks around about the blood-sucking birds, the villager tells him that they would not attack at a "castle town" in the English translation which is a good translation. In the original Japanese he says this is a "shiro no ohizamoto" (城のお膝元). "Shiro" is "castle" while "ohizamoto" is a "headquarters to a lord" or simply "the place where a person of high rank resides"."
>>
>>275211164
End of chapter. And we know that can be trouble.
>>
May 14th, 2003. Author's note:
"Q: What is your favorite food?
A: Crabs, sea urchins, matsutake mushrooms, and puffer fish milt."

>"Q: What is your favorite food?

(i swear i've seen multiple comments from her about meat?)
>>
>>275211205
>>
>>275211276
Cute. Also, would be a hell of a way to die. Tripping over a corpse.

>>275211240
She definitely is a big fan, but there's room in her life for many foods, I guess. She even reminsed about editorial paying for meals of various meat in "My Sweet Sunday Mitsuru Adachi x Rumiko Takahashi".
>>
>>275211435
I think the Inuyasha style is basically set from this point on. I was reading Mao today and yeah, I think Rumiko sticks to this look from here on out.
>>
>>275211482
Many birds. Honestly, at least numbers, it would be scary even if they were normal birds.
>>
>>275211500
At these numbers. Anyway, let it rip.
>>
>>275211500
>>275211514
Sorry, I'm a mess today.

Saimyosho couldn't spy, so we have Kanna needing to be his eyes.
>>
>>275212091
End of chapter. It never ends for Kohaku and Sango.
>>
The original title was 罪の記憶 which seems to translate to "Memories of Sin" or "Memories of Crime".

Watched without interfering per her instructions.
>>
>>275212271
>Rumiko really didn't let up.
she really let an 11-12 year old boy get possessed into becoming a murderer, repeatedly
>>
>>275212385
Furinkan notes that: "Kagura identifies the Infant as Hakudoshi's "fragment" (片割れ/kataware) in the original Japanese. In the Viz translation he is "Hakudoshi's other half"."

I guess one is a bit more grandiose, perhaps inaccurately. Also, I guess the Saimyosho just speak Japanese. I think this is the third time this sort of thing happened and while we never get any dialog from them, I can only assume that them speaking Japanese is more likely than two Naraku fragments and Bankotsu speaking Wasp.
>>
>>275212436
Hm.

>>275212411
Mass murderer! Through sudden, inexplicit betrayal during a brief moment of contentedness and being praised!
>>
>>275212504
I wrote inexplicit rather than inexplicable. It was very much explicit.

It is huge, but it definitely isn't life size. Her Inuyasha and Sessh are crazy though. They might be more than life-size, now that I think about it.
>>
>>275212810
A bit of a central question about the character, even without a religious perspective. How can you be with all this hanging over you?
>>
>>275212832
Information is valuable.
>>
>>275212852
Furinkan notes that: "This chapter finally pays off the storyline that has been in motion since Kohaku's debut five years earlier and we see him finally remember his past."

It does not bring me much joy though.
>>
>>275212885
Sango is described as wounded, which makes sense given that she doesn't need a shard to sustain her life now. But it does feel a bit like an understatement given how she ends up passing out on him, accepting her death and being buried.

She admittedly crawled out of that grave before being given a shard.

June 4th, 2003. Author's note:
"Q: What is something you can't help but collect?
A: Shokugan food series."
Furinkan's note: "These are miniature toy plates of food."

Shokugan isn't a brand or anything. It means "food toy" and refers to small toys that can come with candy.

A lot of unanswered questions still.

>>275213240
>>
>>275213263
I wonder what influences which screentone is used for stuff like that middle panel. It could technically have an all white background and convey the same information.
>>
>>275213296
Another moon. I assume it is third quarter so that would mean New Moon is coming up, but I don't know how accurately she plans these out. It could be first quarter even with the way it is rounded.
>>
>>275213340
These two do have names per Furinkan and other fan sources, but I don't know when their names are mentioned. I'm holding off on referring to them by name until the names are stated. If they're anime only names, we'll find out eventually, I guess.
>>
>>275213423
Furinkan notes that: ""Kikyo's spirit familiars?" - In Japanese Kocho and Asuka are known as "shikigami" (式神). Shikigami are objects animated by infusing spiritual energy into them."

And yes, I checked, this is the term Inuyasha's thought bubble uses.
>>
>>275213483
Oh, I posted their names in the Furinkan quote right after saying I wouldn't. Whatever.

There she is. She always seems to find the tree with the most roots.

>>
>>275213567
Big panels. I don't mind though. I like Inuyasha's expression.
>>
>>275213584
Shippo still sleepy.
>>
>>275213598
End of chapter! Huh?

Also, I had to check what they localized as "Well... hell yes!" and while I may have chosen something a bit different, it does seem accurate enough. It is "あ、当たり めーだ。" which is apparently "Ah" followed by a vulgar way to say "Of course!".

Maybe I would've gone with "Well, obviously!" but it is apparently ruder than even that.
>>
>>275213584
>I like Inuyasha's expression.
that's why she made them big panels
>>
Original title is 託された矢 which both my machine translations translated as "The Entrusted Arrow" but I guess it could be also translated as "The Arrow that is Passed On" or what we see here.

June 11th, 2003. Author's note:
"Q: If your manga was made into a drama, who would you like to be in it and who would they play?
A: I have no idea."
>>
>>275213757
Oh, is that all?

>>275213747
Yes, but I have heard people say that the reason Inuyasha chapters don't have much happen in them is because of these panels, so I figured I'd justify why I like it.

>>275213852
One way of reading it.
>>
>>275213964
Is that how you're supposed to hold it?
>>
>>275213783
Those people are crazy, the reason that Inuyasha chapters fell like they don't have much happen in them is because on a chapter half of it is spend with people running, Naraku getting own or red Tetsusaiga being useless.
>>
>>275213984
Furinkan notes that: "We see the demons floating distantly in the sky with the onomatopoeia "bou" (ボウ). This is the sound of rushing air, similar to "whoosh"."

Hhh...

>>275214022
Admittedly, I recently read Princess Knight (the 60s one, I don't know where the 50s one can be found) and I realized that almost any adventure comic is going to have a lot of panels of people running.

>>275214095
Everyone bracing for it.
>>
>>275214118
Wasn't intended to be sneaky.
>>
>>275214131
At least it wasn't intended to be sneaky on Inuyasha's part. I don't know by how Kikyo decided to call upon him in the middle of the night.
>>
>>275214146
Hehehe. This is honestly one of the more cute moments of jealousy, but I admit that this situation isn't as cute outside of manga.
>>
>>275214191
Furinkan notes that: "Later when seen by Sesshomaru they make the sound "gorororo" (ゴロロロ) which is a rolling about sound."

I usually see it described as a rumble, hence the 'rrrm...", I guess.
>>

>>275213757
>I guess it could be also translated as "The Arrow that is Passed On" or what we see here.
I'm just a beginner but that's what I was taught for phrasing like that, that's it's equivalent to "the noun that/who verbs"
"a woman who wears jeans" would be jeansをwears女
(there's at least three different words for "to wear" in japanese depending on where on the body it's worn and I will not be risking using the wrong one)
>>
>>275209939
Why is Sango showing off her ass at us, again?

End of chapter! The second to last line here was "いよいよ 開くか" which seems to mean "Finally, it is going to open". I don't mind curtain time (it is a common expression and not actually anachronistic since they had plays back then), but I was curious.

Having the raws to look at the Japanese is going to ruin me. This probably has added an hour to this.
>>
Original title is 鉄鶏. This is a proper noun. The kanji say "iron chicken". Or "Steel Fowl" if we use the original localization's title for this chapter.

June 18th, 2003. Author's note:
"Q: What do you think is the scariest horror movie?
A: Joyurei (女優霊) aka Don't Look Up."

Rumiko has no idea where Myoga is at a given point in the story. But he's there sometimes.
>>
>>275214720
Furinkan notes that: ""Fool." Myoga doesn't call Kagome "fool" when she asks about Tekkei. In the original Japanese he simply says "umu" (うむ). This is more like "well" or "hmm"."

I don't know if VIZ just decided to add something to it or misread it or what.

Also, I don't know if there is any actual mythological connection between metal birds and the afterlife. The only metal birds I know of (from googling just now) are Stymphalian birds, which I don't believe have any connection to the afterlife or underworld.

Hah, I own that book, but I never got around to reading Furinkan's translation. Here's the relevant bits for everyone else.

"Do you create a plot for your stories?

Takahashi: I don't really understand what a plot is. What do you mean when you say plot...?

Like writing down an outline of what should happen in bullet points.

Takahashi: I almost never make something like that, but for short stories, I might write about four components.
Just four?

Takahashi: Yeah. Just things like, "There's this kind of person," or "this sort of thing happens". Of course we have meetings, and we usually talk about things like this, but in my case, it's better not to decide on the details.

...

You mentioned earlier that you don't write a plot outline, but the structure is something created in your mind.

Takahashi: In my brain. Bringing paper into it is such a waste."

ヘルプ or "Help" was published on April 20th, 2003 in Big Comic Original. As such, it was published around the time of the chapters in this volume. The title is a loanword from English so it is "herupu", not any of the other Japanese words for the same thing.

This translation is a fanscan. Of course, as unofficial fanscans and translations, they have their own issues but at the least we don't have to worry about flipped art. This fanscan unfortunately does not seem to have the original publication scanned, so it is in grayscale. This story originally had four pages of color and four pages of red tint. I do have Furinkan's image of the cover, which I'll post right after this.

Can you guess what sort of protagonist this one has? I like this one, despite it being a fairly heavy topic.

Furinkan's note on this chapter is something that gets discussed a lot around here:
"The Elderly in Japan - 2018 marked Japan’s 35th anniversary of reaching its status as the world’s oldest population in the world. More than a quarter of Japan’s population is aged over 65 and this is set to increase by 40% by 2025 when the overall population will have shrunk from 127 million in 2019 to 90 million. Japan stands out with 1.8 people aged 25 to 64 for each person aged 65 or over, and it has one of the lowest ratios of people of working age compared to those older than 65 in the world. The country is home to the longest ever recorded life expectancies and the highest elderly population share worldwide at 27%. Japan also has one of the lowest annual birthrates in the world and a continuously decreasing birth fertility rate. In fact, the birthrate in 2016 was 976,978 children, the estimate was 918,397 children in 2018 – which is a decrease of roughly 6%. With the population declining, rapidly ageing, and the birthrate depleting, the economic, political, and societal prospects for Japan are grim especially for young people."

Admittedly, this story is from 2003.

Going to post the wideban extras before I forget. This one is about the Shikon Jewel. Have to split it over two posts. Spoilering that which pertains to stuff we haven't seen yet.

"The Shikon Jewel is Big News

The Shikon Jewel has the ability to increase a human or demon’s spiritual power, and as such is well known among both groups. Naturally this means that when the jewel was shattered and scattered across the land, it was big news to demons. For them, the jewel shattering was akin to someone scattering wads of cash over a city street from an overpass. Of course everyone came running. Grab what you can! Guard it from others! And it wasn’t just the demons, the humans did the same as well."

>>275216742
Other half of this extra.

"Those with Shikon Jewel Shards

The purpose of the Shikon Jewel was to give the main characters a goal in their travels. While looking for shards, they encounter something suspicious and end up in trouble. When a Shikon shard is involved, it’s impossible to live peacefully and happily, after all. If it were, that’d be a feat in itself. I never thought about it while working on the series, but if that ever was the case it would create a major dilemma for the cast. They wouldn’t be able to just snatch the shard away. Maybe I should have done a story like that…(chuckles). Anyway, it was almost always bad guys that got a hold of the shards. They’d absorb one into their body and then strut around acting all big. That’s the nature of demons, I suppose. The Thunder Brothers especially so. They were punks, plain and simple. If there was a powerful person out there, they’d seek them out, fists-a-flailing, just to assert their physical prowess. You can bet they never thought past their own noses. I always think of demons as living for the moment. That being said, they do have a reason to seek out the Shikon shards. They need to get stronger so they aren’t devoured by other demons, so they at least have a will to survive.

Holders of Shikon shards were always unhappy, which is to say the jewel probably craved negative energy. Whenever there’s an item said to grant wishes to those in its possession, there’s usually some toll that needs to be paid. It’s been that way since ancient times. Thinking of Japanese folktales, good fortune usually came to those not seeking it, and those that tried to steal it ended up miserable. That’s how it was in Shita-kiri Suzume. And Kobutori Jiisan. Those stories about shady investment schemes are all like that too. Naraku ends up receiving the jewel from Kikyo later on in the story, but that turned out to be a poor financial decision on his part, didn’t it?"

That sounds very miserable. I'm sorry.

These are going to stop being relevant pretty quickly. Also, the Japanese raw scan isn't consistent, so for Volume 31, it has just the back cover as its own file. Same with the inner sleeve.

The Infant has the Heart so it would technically be the Heartless, though whether it's a Pureblood or Emblem is up for debate. I'd say Emblem just because it's a branch of Naraku and because both it and Hakudoshi were once one being, so it would technically share the spider-shaped mark that's on Hakudoshi's back. As for Naraku himself, he's definitely a Heartless.

Neither of you could even break his barrier and your dumb bird of a mother ate him like a retard. This idea pure demons get that half-demons are always weaker than them is absurd because Naraku is more powerful than 99% of pure demons; no fucking ocue what causes this behavior outside of sheer bullheaded pride.

She probably had a lover who could assume humanoid form or she had a humanoid form herself. That or both were Tekkei and their daughter just came out as a human-looking demon.

>>275218246
It always amuses me that Sesshomaru's true form is just a huge mutt. Kinda easy to forget given how little he uses it.
>>
>>275244763
100% Inuyasha's.
>>
>>275245516
Remember the bat demon and his son. I guess some demons just prefer to go around in a humanoid form. Also the moth guy that made Inuyasha go berserk that one time.

There's always someone. This is regarding Straizo in Jojo Part 2:

"Ahh! Lord Strai is dead!

"I'm going to make a thin book on Lord Strai and a fanclub of him!" or so what I had in mind before... Sob... The beauty die young... (It's written as 美形薄命, a corruption of Japanese proverb 美人薄命)

・゚・(ノД`)・゚・UuUuU... This is too cruel... Waaahh!!

On the other hand, it hasn't even been 2 weeks since I posted a postcard with "NOW IT'S THE TIME FOR STRAIZO TO SHINE!" written on it! WHY! WHY MUST THIS HAPPEN!? SO IT'S ALL OVER JUST LIKE THAT!? YOU'RE KIDDING ME, RIGHT!?

I just don't believe it! He was finished off just like that by JOJO!! There's too much difference in treatment compared to Dio!! He's coming back alive and return, won't he? Won't he? WON'T HE?

....you're making me cry ・゚・(ノД`)・゚・ Even though he was unbelievably dull (and the fact that he's a hillbilly!) I TRULY LOVED HIM!!

LORD STRAI! I DON'T WANT YOU TO DIEEEEEEEE!!

(Araki-)Sensei, you dummy! Waaahh! ・゚・(ノД`)・゚・

PS: The girl in the first and second chapter of 1988 is way too close to him!!"

I know. It's just weird how Sesshomaru chooses to do so even though he looks down upon a hard 90% of humanity.
