If you're not watching 90s anime on a CRT you're doing it wrong.
>>
Fuck off. You're not special for watching cartoons in dogshit quality.
>>
My fagbook screen is better than any CRT.
>>
And Gunbuster is not 90s.

I understand that retro games artists had the scanlines in mind when designing their characters but no such thing is needed in anime since it was cell animated at that time. Still you got me curious, is there any scanlines filter like those games emulators for mpc or mpv?

Where the fuck are you supposed to get DVD rips anymore? Nothing that old seems to be seeded.
>>
I only have a really expensive trinitron clone monitor from the 00's that really wouldn't look anything at all like a nostalgic viewing experience.

>90s anime on a CRT
Is there any reason besides maybe using the scalines to smooth out cel grain? Like >>275211128 said, pixel art was designed with the idea of being smoothed out with CRT post-processing, but I can't imagine what would be too different with anime.
>>
Surely you're watching a VHS or laserdisc version right? You're not watching a DVD or bluray rip on a CRT are you?

scanlines were not invented to smooth out grain tard - it's just a limitations of its time

games got around it, videos didnt

DVD has always been the optimal media for 4:3 content until legit bd rescans. did CRTs suddenly disappear when DVDs were released

Gunbuster is an 80s show, poser

I just think it's funny when people like OP say you should watch an anime in a certain way because it's somehow "more authentic" but then uses a version of it that wasn't released until 15 years or more after the anime came out.

My family adopted plasma TVs pretty early so my opinion on this is probably pretty skewed. Though the Gunbuster DVD first came out in 2001 so that's more in the CRT realm.

I would like to watch my vhs casettes and laserdisc on a regular tv but they dont look that bad on my 55" modern one.

no, just 2000s anime. it's a fun gimmick for like 20 minutes, but the sound quality and eye strain are a pain. The aesthetic of blu-ray releases looks really nice if you can get them setup correctly. Pic unrelated

I sat in front of the tube for over 15 years and ever once felt this. Why are you youngins so weak?

i don't have calluses on my retinas like you, pops. all the anime i watched growing up told me not to sit too close and in a brightly lit room.

DVDs were literally designed for CRTs and came out in 96/97. It's one of the main reasons ripping them has always been a shitshow.
>>
>>275210898
I did back in the 90s.
It looks better on superior modern displays.
